“Perfect!”

Poggio alla Rocca was every bit as good as the pictures promised and more. The owners, Susanna and Francesco were very welcoming and attentive but were never intrusive. The complimentary water and wine were a real bonus, as was the very reasonably priced dinner our hosts prepared for us, as well as the free "tasting" evenings by the pool where we could sample local prosciutto and cheeses. The location was breath-taking, with a view across a beautiful valleys and towards Pari, a delightfully unspoilt hilltop town about 10 minutes drive away. The swimming pool was very carefully designed to over an uninterrupted view over the Tuscan hills. Our two girls loved the pool so much we never bothered to visit the nearest beach, which was about 50km away in Castiglione della Pescaia. Due to non availability, we spent the first 5 days in Ginestra, a small apartment right by the pool, which was a bit small for a family of four, but very well equipped. We moved to Sole for the rest of our 2 week stay, which was much larger and formed part of a very old house in the old hamlet of Monte Acuto which is the core of Poggio alla Rocca. Sole was charming and had beautiful views on all sides. Susanna and Francisco have made a superb job of integrating the newly built apartments into the style of the old village, so it is hard to tell what is old and what is new. The nearest shops were in Pari - a small food shop and another tony shop that sold everything else! For general provisions for self-catering, the nearest supermarket is in Paganico, about 20km south, where there were also a few restaurants. Nearer by, the village of Pari had one very good restaurant which sold local Tuscan delicacies, and functioned as a cafe and centre of village life during the day. I would heartily recommend Poggio alla Rocca. It really is tucked away in the hills (best way to find it is with GPS coordinates provided by the owners). You will definitely need a car - make sure it's a good one as there are some steep gravelly hills to negotiate. Our rented Fiat 500L (not a car I'd recommend!) only just managed to climb them and even then, only in first gear! We would definitely go back to Poggio alla Rocca, perhaps a little earlier in the season when it should be a little cooler than the 30+C we had in late July. The evenings were often cooler and refreshingly breezy at times, and thanks to the pool, we could always cool off!
