Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Argyle and Bute is the local authority area under which Carradale and The Mull of Kintyre comes under. It is an area of great beauty, geographical interest and recreational opportunity. The Mull of Kintyre juts out from the Scottish mainland heading in a South Westerly direction. The first contact point for the Atlantic ocean, the Mull receives a favourable climate with milder winds and less rain than the majority of Scotland. It boasts fantastic beaches on it's coast and a rich history providing interesting buildings and picturesque villages. The main town on the Mull is Campbeltown. A thriving and recently invested in working fishing port with a busy centre. Famous for its whisky distilleries, Campbeltown now has a thriving local" specialist provider" community. These range from Locally sourced smoked salmon, mussels and cheeses outlets to home grown artists. Laterly an American company has invested heavily in the area upgrading a number of local hotels and restaurants as well as taking over the privately run 'Dunes' golf course. The small airport at Macrahanish provides the perfect link to Glasgow airport daily.

Carradale

Carradale, once famous for processing basking shark oil, turned itself into one of the tourism jewels of the Mull of Kintyre. Extremely busy from the 50's to the early 90's. Perhaps less busy now, it has lost none of it's charm. Still an operating fishing port with the main catch being Langostine the boats leave early in the morning returning around dinner time. The ideal opportunity to ask one of the skippers if he would part with some of his catch! The prized shell fish are sold throughout the village in any one of the four hotels or restaurants. A number of coffee shops/cafes now operate giving the tourist a great selection of food and choice of eateries. A recent slip way has been built in the village as well as 3 heavy moorings for larger boats allows visits from both sea and land. The large safe bay to the south of the village allows for all manner of water sports, from fishing, sailing and kayaking. There is a fantastic camping area on the sand dunes who's occupants swell the village in the summer months.
