Nestled within 15 acres of tranquil private grounds, this 18th Century former nun's retreat exudes tranquillity. Set on a quiet lane which fades into a woodland track, it's locality is perfect for an evening stroll or a more ambitious hike along the nearby GR7 long-distance footpath.
Situated in the Laurargais region, between the historic city of Carcasonne and Toulouse, the house is just 2.5km from the medieval village of St Papoul, where amongst the usual Boulangerie, pharmacy, bar and Post office you will also find the 8th Century Abbaye de St Papoul. Approximately 10km away, the town of Castelnaudary, famous for the traditional French dish of Cassoulet, offers every facility you need including many supermarkets. You can also visit the famous Canal du Midi here.
La Son is a large country house that has been sensitively renovated using a chalky colour palette, hand painted antique furniture and hand built wooden pieces. The house retains its original features, chunky beams and open fires which are complimented by all of the necessities of modern life.
Eat, Drink and Relax
Foodies can enjoy the charms of nearby Revel market, returning home with baskets of produce ready to create a sumptuous feast in the amazing hand built kitchen, complete with Lacanche oven. For larger parties there is a second kitchen with extra fridges to accommodate ample food and there is an extra oven if needed. For those inspired to bake there is a Cuisineart mixer.
While away the long hot summer days lounging by the large (6x14m/20x46') private infinity pool or snooze in the shaded lounge area. Enjoy an al fresco lunch on the terrace soaking up the views across the grounds to the Pyrenees. A spot of tennis on the private court or a stroll around the gardens is the perfect pre-dinner activity. On chilly evenings, dinner can be enjoyed in the outdoor dining room in front of a roaring log fire, or on balmy evenings under the floodlit trees of the back terrace, then curl up with a good book from out well stocked library.
At the end of the day soak in the freestanding tub before falling into crisp cotton sheets and drift off to sleep to the sound of the cicadas.
The attic suit is packed with original features including a maze of chunky wooden beams, hand painted door and great views across the grounds. Perfect for family groups, it combines a large double room with additional single bed, adjoining twin and single bedroom, sleeping a total of 6 people. In addition, there is a shower room with WC and walk-in dressing room.
On the first floor, the master suite has a king sized bed and en-suite with bath and views towards the pool. Up a small separate staircase you will find the Yellow room, sumptuously decorated with a double bed and en-suite shower room. Views from this suite include the tennis court and on towards the Pyrenees.
The twin room can be easily converted into a double and has an adjoining single room. Next to this, the final double features a king sized bed. These rooms share the main family bathroom, featuring large shower, freestanding claw foot bath and large sink. They also enjoy views across the grounds to the Pyrenees.
The front courtyard provides secure private parking for up to 8 cars. A boot room is available for dumping muddy boots and also houses a washing machine, tumble dryer and the extra kitchen.
The pool room also houses a shower and WC and the pool can be heating during the cooler months.
A quiet study is fully equipped with broadband, a printer and space to store files for those who have to work during their stay.
For the little ones the well stocked games room includes table tennis, table football and a boxing bag. Or they can enjoy the outdoors by bouncing on the trampoline or using the scooters or bikes to explore the grounds. Their day can be rounded off with a traditional family evening of board games, curling up in the snug in front of a DVD or playing on the Play Station.
Two iPod docking stations are available for those who want to listen to their favourite music.
