The Languedoc-Roussillon region

With its stunning countryside and Mediterranean climate, the Aude is the perfect holiday location. This area of south-west France is noted for its vineyards and pretty villages yet the safe and sandy beaches just outside Narbonne and the foothills of the majestic Pyrenées are just an hour's drive away. The region is rich in history, culture and tradition. Explore the ancient abbeys, the astounding ruined castles of the Cathars, the "Bastide" towns and much, much more.

There again, for those who simply wish to lie back, relax and chill, the food and wines of this sun-drenched corner of Le Hexagone will delight the palate of even the most discerning Francophile. From the chic, fine-dining Michelin starred restaurants, through the traditional brasseries, to eating "al fresco" at a gem of a fish bistro on the banks of the Canal du Midi - here is something for everyone to treasure. Hundreds of proud, family run vineyards lie within easy reach : the "Appelations" of Minervois, Fitou, Corbieres, St. Chinian, and Limoux (famous for its sparkling champagne-like wines before Dom. Perignon existed!) all lie within the Département of the Aude.

The two quarters of the ancient city of Carcassonne could hardly be more different. The narrow, cobbled streets of La Cité take you back in time as they wind their way beneath the crenellated walls of this mediaeval fortress, the largest and best preserved in France. The breathtaking view as you approach the floodlit bastion at night by crossing the old footbridge over the river is one that will never leave you. Ever since Walt Disney was inspired to use La Cité as the model for Sleeping Beauty's castle film-makers have harnessed the magic of its appeal. "The Name of the Rose" and "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves" are two shot on location here, while local novelist Kate Mosse is the latest author to have featured La Cité in her book "Labyrinth". Every year, on Bastille Day (14th July) a spectacular fireworks display attracts thousands of people from all over the country to witness the re-enactment of the siege of La Cité by Simon de Montfort's army in 1209.

During the summer months the Carcassonne Festival provides the stage for a host of internationally acclaimed performers to entertain the many visitors who throng the town. Such stars as Diana Ross, Sting, Seal and Supertramp have appeared in recent years, enthralling the 3,000 fans who fill the open-air amphitheatre below the Viscount's Castle in La Cité. Every aspect of the Arts is represented during the Festival, which grows in popularity from year to year.

STOP PRESS.The dates for the Festival de Carcassone are now online at.

"Absolutely Excellent - Could not ask for more"

We were a couple of friends meeting for a catch up with each other. We had a fabulous time in Sally & Paul’s amazing apartment. For a start Sally and Paul were great and made us feel so welcome. They go the extra mile for you, quite literally, because I drove down to Carcassonne and my friend flew in. Due to the fact that I was a bit fazed about finding my way to the apartment, they met us at the airport and I followed them there in my car – excellent customer service. The apartment is truly fabulous. So clean, warm and comfortable with everything you could want: Copious quantities of hot water, heating if you need it (but the apartment stays really warm). Soft fluffy towels, a well equipped kitchen, extremely comfortable beds. Then there is the view and what a view it is! You are on the 3rd floor with fabulous views over to the Cité. It is bliss to sit there in the cosy comfortable apartment and watch the Cité light up at night. What an amazing view you must have there for the fireworks on July 14th!! Belle Vue is a very apt name for this place! The location is perfect, we walked our feet off but it was so easy as you are between the Cité and the Bastide, with a comfortable walk to either. We had a truly great time and would not hesitate to recommend this apartment to anyone who wants a break in Carcassonne. It gets 10 out of 10 from us and given the chance, we will be back.
