The ground floor "highlight" is the stylish and characterful “cook's kitchen” and diner. It is well appointed with an oven and hob, microwave, kettle, toaster and a family size fridge-freezer. There is also a washing machine and plenty of storage space. The kitchen has everything you need to enable you to enjoy the wonderful local seasonal produce which can be sourced from the market garden or the colourful food markets at Trèbes or Carcassonne.

In the evenings enjoy a relaxed dinner in your private Courtyard, a gas BBQ is also provided, or take your wine and supper down to the Canal side gardens.

Adjacent to the kitchen is the modern shower room with extra-large shower and under basin storage.

GUEST ACTIVITIES

By the canal you have access to our own charming mooring and garden entertaining area – a perfect place to watch life on the Canal pass you by while sipping a glass of local Millepetit Rosé!

Cross the bridge by the Chateau and you are on the canal path for the 3 km (c40 min) walk into Trèbes or a cycle in either direction to experience the iconic sights of the Canal and the local villages.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!.....

Millepetit is a picturesque 12th century wine producing Domaine on the Canal du Midi UNESCO World Heritage site, (which featured very! briefly in TV chef Rick Steins' 'French Odyssey' in 2004.) The estate is dominated by the Chateau with its 12C tower overlooking the Canal.

CANAL LIFE

The life of the Canal passes in front of you as Trèbes is one of the main ports of the Canal, with luxury barges, houseboats, the occasional yacht and little “Popeye” boats. Cyclists, walkers, hikers and bird fanciers, even the occasional hunter find their way along the Canal's path. From the Canal you can walk or cycle in either direction to reach as far as Bordeaux on the Atlantic Coast or head south to the Canal de la Robine and the Mediterranean. Millepetit could be a staging point as you “boat” your way to Russia on the vast European canal network.

GETTING AROUND

As there is no public transport a car is highly recommended whether to shop, see the local sights or follow the Cathar Trail. Bicycles can be hired both at Millepetit and in Trèbes.

Our closest transport links are the Carcassonne train station (12 kms) and Airport (19 kms). Other airports are at Beziers (103 kms), Toulouse (115 kms), and Montpelier (157 kms).

We can arrange pick-ups from Carcassonne Airport or Station - subject to availability.

OTHER THINGS...

Bed linen, bath, hand and tea towels are all provided.

A starter pack of tea and coffee; and basic condiments are included.

NO extra cleaning is charged, however we do ask that you please leave the Cottage in the same condition as when you arrived.

Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

Languedoc-Roussillon - known as the Languedoc is the central wine growing region of the south of France. It includes the western Mediterranean coast of France, stretching from the Rhone valley in the east to the Spanish border in the south west.

Trèbes is located in the Aude (11) department with the Cathar city of Carcassonne as its famous UNESCO neighbour.

The Canal du Midi is a UNESCO world heritage site and is the world's oldest commercial canal, built in 17th century, it stretches from Agde to the Atlantic. It is a popular tourist attraction for boating, cycling and walking enthusiasts. The canal is shaded by majestic plane trees and passes vineyards, orchards and quaint French villages.

The wine growing areas around Carcassonne produce the key varieties of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Piquepoul, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Mauzac.

Hiking enthusiasts who want a more challenging treck can't go past the beautiful Alaric and black mountains where there are numerous hiking trails south of the river Aude, the Corbières hills and the ranges of foothills that rise toward the Pyrenees.

Carcassonne

Within the Domaine you will find a working farm with a number of families who own and manage various businesses including the grapevines, apricot orchards and olive groves. In season, you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables from the market garden and Millepetit's own wines.

There is always activity with asparagus harvesting in April or the pruning of the apricot, sweet almond or olive trees. Yet it can be sublimely peaceful as you sit under the old Yew tree sipping your wine, chatting or reading your book. The Domaine really comes alive during the vendange or grape harvest in September as the wine grower prepares his harvest for sale to the local vignerons. It is great fun to be part of this special time for the Domaine.
