The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Once the heart of Cathar country, this region is full of history and interest. The Cité of Carcassonne was once one of the centres for the Cathares and still exists today, featuring in Kate Mosse's book of Labyrinth.
Close to both the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenées mountains, there is a perfect holiday for everyone.
The city of Carcassonne has two world class heritage sites:
The fortified medieval cité of Carcassonne
The Canal du Midi, the canal which leads from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea
The charming French Bastille, or city centre, where the house is situated, is full of restaurants, shops, theatre, cinema etc).
There is also the well-known Place Carnot where you can enjoy the sun in one of the cafés and look around the lovely market.

"Cheap, cheerful and charming"
Stayed for four nights and it was an ideal base, very close to the centre of the Bastide St Louis in Carcassonne. It's a quirky little place on a narrow street but clean, comfortable and well appointed. Monsieur Fichot was very pleasant and was waiting for us when we arrived at the agreed time. It cost less than 50 euros a night so a bit of early morning noise was to be expected and not a problem. You only need a couple of days to take in Carcassonne's attractions but the town makes a good base with the train station offering easy access - there's even a 1 euro train to Limoux and Quillan to encourage tourists. Enjoyed our stay and would recommend.

We came to stay in this apartment for 5 days in april. We had an absolutely wonderful stay. I am very unimpresed in the previous comment which put down the hosts. They were both absolutely lovely. I spoketo Cathy via email before visiting and we agreed the price and deposit. Cathys husband was waiting for us upon our arrival which made things very easy. He was a lovely gentlemen, very helpful, friendly and forgave us for our terrible attemps at speaking french! The apartment is absolutely charming, we spent alot of time i the kitchen, cooking with the windows open letting in the sunshine. We also particularly liked the bedroom, which had beautiful blue cloudy paint on the walls and very pretty bedding. All of the coviniences were fabulous, nothing to complain about. The location of the apartment is fantastic, right in the centre of the new town, with all of the shops and markets within a two minute walk. Also the la cite, is only a five or ten minute stroll away. We particularly like the area down by the river where there are picnic benches and lovely views. There is a great little supermarket in the square, place carnot, as well as many great bakerys and butchers. We will definately be staying here again, and would like to say a huge thankyou to the owners for a fantastic price, welcome and apartment! Thankyou!

"Fantastic, centrally located, comfortable accommodation!"
My daughter (7), a friend and I stayed in this gite for 2 weeks in October this year. Robert and Cathy are very friendly and helpful hosts. The gite is in the heart of the lower city, within easy walking distance of the canal, railway station, Citadel, river etc. It was clean and tidy and well appointed for a small family who preferred to cook our own meals rather than eat out every night. One word of warning: this gite is 4 rooms over 4 floors - i.e. you need to be able to easily navigate stairs - and is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Overall I highly recommend this gite. We had a wonderful 2 weeks exploring Carcassonne and the wider area from it and would return again if we got the chance.
