The Hebrides region
Skye has a vast array of activities on offer, so hopefully these suggestions will help you plan your trip.
Walking and Climbing
Skye is a paradise for walkers of all abilities, there really is something for everyone. For walks in the area, please see Walkhighlands website which can give you all the detail you will require including maps and gradings. If you are looking for a guide to take you up into the Cuillins, contact either Climb Skye or Skye Guides. Please click on the names for more info.
Sailing, Kayaking and Diving
Sailing is a great way of seeing the island, there are numerous opportunities to do this. Sail Ezra, a replica pilot cutter which is available for day charters; Seafari, adventure sea trips “the best outdoor experience”; or Skyak Adventures, sea kayaking around the Isle of Skye. For diving, there is a specialist diving centre based at Stein, on the Waternish peninsula.
Cycling, Horse Riding and Golf
Cycles can be hired from Island Cycles, Portree. Horse riding is available a the Skye Riding Centre (10mins drive from Portree), and there is a 9 hole golf Course at the Isle of Skye Golf Club, Sconser.
Talisker is a 5 minute drive away and has a shop, visitor centre and offers tours around the distillery. Booking in advance is recommended.
Castles, Museums and Galleries
There are a number of interesting castles and museums on the island. Dunvegan Castle, the seat of the Macleods, Armadale Castle and Gardens, Clan Donald Centre & Museum of the Isles are a few. The nearest gallery is The Loch Harport Gallery in Portnalong. We would also recommend Ronald MacDonald Photography, an t-eilean photographic gallery, Portree for some fantastic landscape photography.
There is a great community swimming pool in Portree, Arainn Fhinn, The Fingal Centre, Portree which includes a swimming pool with sauna and steam room, a climbing wall, a weights room and sports hall. Swimming sessions are very structured, so always best to get there 10mins before the start of the session.
There is a large adventure playground at Sligachan Hotel (10min drive) with fantastic views to the Cuillins. Another great playpark can be found on the island of Raasay as you head towards Raasay Outdoor Centre.
The sandy beach at Glenbrittle is a 20min drive away and is a great place to take the children for a day out. Another favourite is the Coral Beach near Dunvegan. There are some great walks which are suitable for children for example the Fairy Pools, Quiraing and Neist Point Lighthouse.
There are various boat trips available for example the Seaprobe Atlantis, as glass bottom boat which offers wildlife cruises from Kyle of Lochalsh from Easter to October.
If the weather is wet, then some suggestions would be Dunvegan Castle; Eilean Donan Castle, Dornie; Aros Centre, Portree; Glendale Toy Museum, or the Isle of Skye Serpentarium.
