Description

The House:

Like most in the village, our house is an old, thick stone-walled building with its foundations probably going back to Arab times (the church at the top of the hill was originally the village mosque). Although modernized, It has a rustic, typical Andalusian peasant feel to it, which we have tried to preserve.

The house is on three levels. On the ground floor is a newly-built bathroom and laundry, on the 1st floor a dining room with a small kitchen suitable for light meals and two bedrooms, the larger, a double-bedroom, with en-suite bathroom. The other bedroom has a bunk bed which will accommodate 2 adults. Stairs lead up to the lounge with fireplace, DVD/video player and an adjoining small attic room with an extra bed. From the lounge there is access to the two terraces, the top one having nice views of the countryside and valley. On a clear day the Mediterranean can be seen in between the mountains (and sometimes even Morocco!). There is electricity and bottled

Fan and gas heaters, washing machine, ironing board, hair dryer, crockery provided.

Parking available close by and the village swimming pool and restaurant-bar (open during summer) is only 5 minutes walk from our front door.

The Village:

Canillas de Albaida is a 'Pueblo Blanco', a typical Andalusian 'White Village” of population 700 set amongst the mountains of the Sierras Tejeda and Almijara in the Axarquia region of Andalusia. Canillas is about 1:15 hour from Malaga airport, by motorway and the last 13 km up a windy mountain road (lovely views, but careful if you're driving!). Also accessible by public transport form Malaga Coach Station- 3 buses a day.

The village is about 50 km east of Malaga and only about 20km from the coast but at a height of around 2000 ft. at the end of a beautiful but windy mountain road. The locals are friendly and very hospitable. They are mainly farm people, most still working in the nearby fields growing grapes for the local wine and olives for the olive oil cooperative.

We are right at the entrance to a very beautiful nature reserve where there are many delightful mountain walks through forests of pines and 'olmo' oaks amongst wild flowers and along small rivers of pristine waters- there are spots where a cool refreshing dip is possible.

The coast is only half an hour drive away with access to many beaches and sea-side bars and restaurants- all serving delicious fresh fish dishes.

Canillas itself has 5 restaurants plus the favourite bar Cerezo, run by Paco and his family, which serves good, simple food and wine outside on a cool terrace with a great view. It's also just a few yards down the road from the house.

The Andalucia region

Andalucia is a remarkable region full of picturesque white-washed villages, the 'pueblos blancos and incredible sea and mountain scenery. It is also full of historic interest from Roman to Moorish, which is still very evident in our village and neighbouring ones like Archez, with its 13th century minaret and Salares.

Of course Granada and the Alhambra are the main Moorish atractions and within easy drive from Canillas. Malaga is closer with its fascinating Picasso Museum and rich selection of 'Tapas' bars. Flemenco can also be heard in several places.

Closer still is Nerja, on the coast with lovely beaches and good restaurants.

Canillas de Albaida

Canillas de Albaida has several amenities including the large village swimming pool and pergola restaurant/bar which is open during the summer and is only 3 minutes walk from our front door.

All year round there are various 'Fiesta' days in and around the village when live music is played and wine drunk in appreciable amounts- apart from that, the nightlife is fairly quiet and revolves around the four local bars (but sometimes till early morning). Bars around here, of course, only shut when the last customer leaves.

The main Fiesta is 'San Anton', the patron saint of the village, on the 1st weeked after the 14th January. Dancing 'till late, fireworks, benediction of farm animals and a gigantic Paella for the whole village are the main attractions. In the 1st week of August the 'Fiesta del Verano' in Canillas and the 'Noche del Vino' in Competa are also unmissable.

There are food shops, a bank, pharmacy and a medical centre in the village.

A fishmonger drives up to the village every day in his yellow van bringing freshly-caught seafood to your door.

Nearby Competa has a larger selection of restaurants and shops to cater for all necessities.

“we had a gorgeous relaxing spring holiday”

This house is beautifully situated and the walks were stunning at that time of year - so many flowers, I did a few paintings from the rooftop terrace as well. Very strong memories of being woken by passing traffic - a single donkey in this case, and of the evening swifts or house martins screeling and swooping in the evenings. We mostly chose to eat out in the local restaurants, although the kitchen seemed well equiped for self-cooking. Wonderful holiday, I will definitely try to go back to the same place in the next few years. Sylvia Hallett

A charming house inside a friendly Andalucian village. Rooftop terrace for breakfast. Welcoming village bar nearby, and choice of restaurants, some very good. Many fine walks in the area, including along the irrigation channels between fields. A car is useful but not essential if you like walking.

A charming traditional pueblo blanco house imaginatively decorated and furnished by the owners, Casa Mari is conveniently situated in the charming village of Canillas de Albaida. It was always interesting to discover a hidden corner of the house. The roof terrace is a delightful place to enjoy the sunset with a glass of wine, a distant view of the sea and occasionally of the coast of Africa. There are local restaurants, shops, bank, swimming pool within strolling distance. Canillas is ideally located for car trips to explore the many small villages, coastal area and fiestas of the region or to walk in the surrounding hills.
