The East Sussex region
1066 country, the corner of East Sussex where a monumental battle famously reshaped the nation, boasts a classically beautiful English landscape infused with an epic sense of history.
A landscape of moated castles, steam railways, picturesque seaside towns and steep-cobbled streets, this is 1066 country. Scenes overlayed through the passing centuries that today survive in composite to create the archetypal image of England. An England which, hundreds of years ago, had its fate decided here in this beautiful coastal pocket of East Sussex, where an Norman invasion force successfully landed on these shores and won a famous victory, forging a new nation and forever changed the course of this countries history.
In 1066 Country you’re surrounded by countryside and coastal reaches so abundant with the historical evidence of the past thousand years, it’s impossible to imagine how this country may have evolved had Harold Godwinson, later to become Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon king, won the battle of Hastings on the 14 October 1066, a date since etched into the national consciousness. As it was, the day and the crown belonged to William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy.
Thankfully 1066 country today, ringing with the history of events born from perceived betrayals and false promises, never disappoints its guests. 1066 country offers its visitors a countless array of famous historical sites and crumbling fairytale ruins of ancient castles. Immaculate country houses set in magnificent gardens are scattered across a backdrop of rolling fields dotted with sheep and woodlands intersected with steep-banked lanes that weave their way through tiny hamlets and charming villages. To the south lies the region’s coast, encompassing the towns of Bexhill, Hastings and England’s prettiest town, Rye, cradled to the west by the chalky bolster of the South Downs. This is soon to become a national park and bracing walks along gorse-lined ridges provide sweeping sea views to rival those of the raptors riding lazy circles in the thermals above.
The Rock is just a short walk from Camber Sands. This wide, sandy beach is over several miles long and is the perfect spot in which to breathe in the exhilarating sea air.
The Rock offers easy access to the beach, ideal for flying kites, making sand castles and spending relaxing family time. This wide open space is popular with windsurfers, bathers and horse riders and there is a network of footpaths and cycle routes criss-crossing the nearby wildlife reservation. When you can’t be outside, there’s an indoor pool at Rye and sports centres at New Romney, Hastings and Tenterden.
The village and dunes were once the haunt of smugglers, whose ill-gotten gains accounted for the prosperity of neighbouring Rye.
Historic beauty on your doorstep
Nearby Rye has a rich and colourful history. Its cobbled streets, enchanting church and beautifully preserved buildings are proof of the towns’ importance as a medieval Cinque Port.
Rye played an important part in the defence of the realm. Local fortifications like Camber Castle are now popular tourist attractions. Perched on a hill overlooking the marshes, Rye is the perfect place to explore, shop and eat out. Its charming ancient streets are filled with a great selection of independent retailers, restaurants, pubs and a weekly market.
With the blend of tradition and culture in Rye and the beauty and tranquillity of Camber Sands, The Rock is ideally positioned to enjoy the very best this unique corner of East Sussex has to offer.

"An amazing retreat for our new little family"
This is the second time we have stayed here and we can't sing its praises high enough. Everything we need is here for us and for our 6 month old bambino. Everything from coffee machine to baby baths and bouncers to Sky TV. The whitesands estate is quiet and peaceful off season so we always make a point of coming when we can have the beach to ourselves. If you want a house in Camber, near the beach, with a lovely little garden for the evenings then look no further. Book with besides the seaside, get your Ocado delivery for when you arrive, kick off your shoes and relaaaaaaaaaax.
Thank you for the lovely review, The Rock is a great choice for holidays with the little ones! Look forward to welcoming you back for your third holiday with us in the Autumn!

"Great location, lovely little house, well equipped and clean"
The Rock was a wonderful place to stay with my parents, other half and children for a week at the end of August. I was pleasantly surprised at how well-equipped the house was, both in relation to self catering and to fun and games on the beach. The little garden at the back was very pretty to sit out in. There is a lovely table that seats 8 out here, so eating al fresco very easy, though it can be windy. As a mum, it was fantastic to have a washer-dryer and I used this several times through the week - and means you can limit the clothes you bring, and simply wash, dry and re-wear, saving on packing time. There's a big clothes-horse, and with the sun and wind, clothes dried very quickly if hung outside for a couple of hours. The house was pleasingly decorated and very clean (barring a little mold on the sealant in the bathrooms, but believe that's being sorted in the end of season spruce-up). The walk to the beach is only a few minutes and the drive into Rye also only a few minutes. We loved the location and would definitely rent here again. The only two minor negatives for us were the smallness of the house in comparison to our own home home (a week was fine for us, though for a longer stay, we'd probably look for somewhere with more room). Also, we found our duvet and pillows very uncomfortable - think it was just that we're used to feathers and they were synthetic stuffing of some kind, so probably fine if it's what you normally use. If we rented here again, we'd probably take our own (just for us - the kids didn't complain!). All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable week's stay and I would definitely recommend the Rock, particularly for families with children.

The Rock was very well equipped and we had everything we needed. Everything was of a high standard and the rooms were all a good size. It felt very much like a family home in a very nice area. It is quite a way to a large supermarket so we shopped once for the whole week as this was easiest with 2 young children who hate shopping.

"The best equipped house I have ever stayed in."
As a family I think every need we had was taken care of - we ranged from 4 months to 60 years, and each of us was well catered for.

"Very nice and well maintained cottage; ideal for a family holiday with childeren"
The cottage is very nice and tidy. Youl will find everything for a relaxing holiday with your family. The sandy beach is only a few minutes walk. The housekeeper is very helpful and will find a solution for your needs. We certainly consider to come again!

"This was a lovely week"
We stayed in THE ROCK as a German family with 3 children, 8,13,15 years old. We all liked the house and the area of the other holiday houses near to us. The weather was fine, so we went every day to the beach ( very good for small children). Our children liked the Wii and it was wonderful that we had Wi-Fi. The house was very clean, only one think we didn't like, the mattresses.

"Lovely accommodation and perfect location from which the delights of East Sussex can be explored."
The property was exceptionally well presented and equipped, leaving us wanting for nothing. The Welcome Pack was a real bonus. It meant that we could have a cup of tea on arrival while we unpacked and planned the rest of our day. The local information that was sent on booking confirmation was really very useful. In terms of location, if you like the the natural coastline of Camber Sands then this location is ideal as the beach is walking distance away. Rye is just a short drive or bus ride away where there are some really lovely shops and places to eat.
