The Canary Islands region

With three thousand hours of sunshine a year, Fuerteventura is the closest Canary Island to the African coast with only 100km separating the 'Punta de la Entallada' from Cape Juby in Morroco and is the second largest (after Tenerife) of all the islands. The weather conditions of Fuerteventura are very similar to Florida and Mexico which make this the ideal holiday location. It has many enormous sand dunes and long sandy beaches (more than one hundred and fifty). Even though most of the land consists of stone and rock, these are some of the most impressive beaches in the whole of Europe. In the history of time Fuerteventura is generally regarded as the oldest of all the Canaries and its strange contours come from various volcanic episodes. The last eruption occurred around 7,000 years ago. Should you wish to see some volcanic activity take a trip to the neighboring island of Lanzarote, it's well worth it. See our Ferry page for details on how to get there. You can also take a short boat trip over to the small island of Los Lobos (only 6sqkm) and really get away from it all. Water sports are very popular in Fuerteventura. Every year hundreds of surfers, windsurfers and divers descend on Fuerteventura and during July the island is host to the P.W.A world windsurfing speed and slalom event at Sotavento in the south. There are many new attractions inviting tourists to discover different aspects of the Island's landscape and culture such as the Betancuria Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography and Tefia Craft Village to name but a few.

Caleta de Fuste

Fuerteventura Golf Club is an 18 hole championship golf course, with lush wide fairways and swaying palm trees which offers both an interesting and challenging test for players of all standards. The course, the first on the island, is a par 70 extending 6124 metres from the championship tees, with a mild descent from the Clubhouse down towards the ocean.Unfortunately you will have to walk the 2 minutes from the La Isla Bonita family golf villas.(I suppose you could take the car!!). Green fees (Circa 40 euro) are relatively inexpensive particularly compared to mainland Spain or Portugal. The Fuerteventura golf course was designed by the prestigious architect Juan Catarimeau, who realised the importance of the prevailing northerly wind on the design and landscaped the course with this factor in mind. Water comes into play on many holes with a series of attractive lakes and brooks traversing the course. To compensate for the prevailing breeze and water the greens are large and most of the fairways are quite generous. It has hosted the spanish open on the European Tour.Fuerteventura golf course, which is superbly appointed and maintained, will present a challenge to the most serious golfer as well as an ideal place to improve your game if you are less experienced. There is a large practice area which includes a 50 bay driving range area and extensive practice putting / chipping facilities. Professional tuition is available in several languages. The clubhouse includes large pro-shop, changing rooms with lockers, a club storage area and a choice of bars and restaurants. There is also an outside terrace and garden area where you can enjoy your drink overlooking the 18th green with spectacular views down towards the Atlantic Ocean. Buggies, trolleys and two classes of clubs can be hired.

Contact with owner/agent all the time, Villa very clean and well prepared to guest's. We will highly recomended villas to our friends.

Hi Robert , Absolutely delighted with that positive feedback . We have invested heavily this year to upgrade both Villa El hierro and Villa Gomera on the Fuerteventura Golf Course. It's reassuring that the investment is helping to make our guests stay even more enjoyable. Hope to see you back again real soon . Thanks a million Derek & Cathy (Owners)

“33 El Cortijo - Villa El Hierro - An excellent Villa”

Reviewed 4 Nov 2014

Just returned from a fantastic stay at Villa El Hierro. Weather was excellent. The Villa is lovely, in a great position for access to all amenities and yet very very peaceful, it seemed like the other properties were not occupied it was so quiet. Very easy to find thanks to the owners very clear directions We found the Villa very clean and spacious Villa El Hierro contained everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The Children particularly enjoyed the heated pool The handy Shopping centre with a Spar Supermarket is only about 15 mins stroll away as is the wonderful beach. Although we did not attempt the walk, I guess it would not take to much longer to walk into Calletta Great recommendation in Cicar as well they were great, very easy process to pick up the Car as the office is in arrivals therefore while the family collected the baggage I went to CIcar and all completed in 15 mins. We will most defiantly be looking to return as soon as we can.

“Villa el Hierro is a lovely villa with spectacular views and good facilities.”

We had a fantastic stay at Villa el Hierro 3-12 May 2013. The villa is in a wonderful position with great views to the sea and over the golf course. It is well equipped and the outdoor area, pool and BBQ are lovely. We would recommend a car although the town is a walkable distance. We would certainly book this villa again.

Hi Laureen , I am delighted you had a great stay at Villa El Hierro and we hope to see you back with us very soon. Derek

“Comfortable but not good at all...”

Reviewed 20 Feb 2013

The villa itself is well located within easy walking distance of the local supermarket and beach, and the accommodation was clean and comfortable but lacking in a lot of areas. Firstly we chose the villa as it was described as "wheelchair friendly" - it is not! There are 4 or 5 large steps when coming from the roadside parking up to the from door and a very small step leading from the back door into the pool area. The location of the sofas in the living room meant they had to be moved almost every time the wheelchair either needed to go out of the front door or into the bathroom or bedroom. The doorways were narrow and manoeuvring a wheelchair into the bathroom and shutting the door behind was almost impossible. Their are 2 baths with showers but we were fine with this prior to booking. The pool - advertised as heated - was freezing when we arrived, although a pool cover was fitted two days into our trip which did allow the pool to warm up after we Had to read the instrutions and work out how to et the timer for the pool heater. The pool shower did not work. The boiler broke when we were there leaving us without hot water twice and although the maintenance people were quick to arrive and look into the problem all they could do was to leave us screwdriver and tell us how to unscrew the boiler and reset it if it happened again. One of the taps in the bathroom also broke and we were told that they couldn't replace as they always broke and were €60 each. Their was one wine glass in the whole house so we had to drink wine from tumblers. Although there was enough cutlery and crockery there was very little else supplied in the kitchen, the dishwasher was out of salt and rinse aid and there was no dishcloths or washing liquid and only one tea towel. We had anticipated watching a DVD series and although the DVD player did work there was no remote so if we missed anything we couldn't rewind. Not that we would have watch tv anyway but there were very few channels and none of the terrestrial ones. The advertised wifi, which we were happy to pay for, was intermittent and often went long periods without signal. There is quite a few errors with this accommodation, we were told that some long term tenants had just moved out and had cleared the place out, but this wasn't our problem - if it is on the market to be let it should be fully equipped. In spite of these errors we had a lovely holiday and would strongly recommend the restaurant "El Capitan" in Caleta de Fueste

Hi Paul, Thank you for your review . It would have been easier for me to not accept it and not have it posted online. However we need to take the good with the bad and I appreciate your honest feedback and your experiences at the villa. Upfront I want to say I am sincerely sorry you had all these issues . It was clearly a mistake to rent the villa as wheel chair friendly and I have removed this now so the same issue does not arise. The kitchen inventory items I was not even aware of and have addressed these along with the pool shower . The pool cover issue was due to a supplier being late with delivery (3 weeks late in fact). In hindsight we should have taken more time to prepare the villa for weekly holiday lets after the long term let where the previous longer term tenant abused our property quite badly. We now have it back to the high standard our clients expect. I am delighted that you still had a lovely holiday and I would welcome you back again with a promise that you will not have the same experience next time. Thanks a million . Derek
