Location description from owner

The Province of Munster region

The Grand Atlantic Coast tour or most popularly known as the Ring of Kerry, is a tour of County Kerrys central peninsula of Iveragh. Its an area known throughout the world for magificent and inspiring scenery. While Killarney is regarded as the gateway, the tour can commence at any point on the Ring of Kerry.

Caherciveen is a strong market town on the estuary of the River Fertha. There are vast boglands to the east and south. A unique feature is the long street which must be traversed by all through traffic. At the Eastern side before entering the town are the ruins of CAHRAN HOUSE where Daniel O Connell "the Liberator" was born in 1775.The O Connell Memorial church in the town of Caherciveen is the only Roman Catholic church in Ireland dedicated to a layman. Daniel O Connell (1775-1847) was born at Cahran, just east of the town a bronze sculpture of him is erected. He is known as the Liberator because of his successful efforts in gaining full religious freedom for catholics. He campaigned vigorously for Irish Independance after taking his seat in Westminister in 1829. An outstanding orator and legal counsel O Connell was remembered for his trenchant performances in the law courts.

Just outside Caherciveen there is dramatic evidence of early Christian settlements and comtemporary archaeological surveys have revealed valuable finds. The Ring forts of Cathair Geal and Leacanabuaile are popular places of interests, also the ruins of Ballycarbery castle, the Old barracks, Knocknadobar mountain and Caherciveen Marina where boat trips to suit all tastes e.g harbour cruises, fishing trips and not to forget Skellig Michael Rocks a UNESCO site! Beautiful blue flag beaches are all within a 10km radious of the area

There is plenty outdoor activities to include hiking, watersports, horse riding, and cycling tours. Knocknadobar Mountain which has valuable history is a lovely climb and especially on a clear sunny day when you reach the top you will be rewarded with 30 foot celtic cross and with it stunning views of Caherciveen, Kells, Skellig Michael and the Blasket Islands.

Cahersiveen

When you are making your way to this property on the N20 after leaving the town of Killorglin, with its winding roads along the Mountain stage and Kells you will notice apart from the layways in which to pull in and look at the Atlantic Ocean and Dingle bay which is a wonderful photo opportunity, visible evidence of a Railway line which ran from Farranfore junction to Caherciveen 1883-1960. The track route and tunnels and a hill high viaduct can still be clearly seen beside the main road near Kells.

When you see this you are only 10km away from your property, where you will be welcomed by Fiona and where you then begin your comfortable country retreat!
