The Yorkshire region

The glorious North Yorkshire coastline includes Runswick Bay, Staithes, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, and Ravenscar to the north, and Cayton Bay, Filey, Reighton Sands, Bridlington, Flamborough and the bird reserve at Bempton Cliffs to the south. Inland, visit the delightful market towns of Pickering, Malton and Helmsley. On the way to Pickering, stop off at Thornton le Dale for an ice cream and a stroll by the river. Travel on the North York Moors Railway from Pickering to Grosmont via Goathland (Aidensfield in Heartbeat). York is less than an hour;s drive away. Even closer are Castle Howard near Malton, Scampston Hall with its garden designed by Piet Oudolf, and Burton Agnes Hall and gardens near Bridlington, which is particularly good for children as well as keen gardeners. There is surfing at Cayton Bay and Scarborough, mountain bike trails and Go Ape in Dalby Forest, and a vast variety of wonderful walking for all tastes and abilities.

Burniston

The town of Scarborough was the first English seaside resort. It has a beautiful setting, with two golden beaches, each having a different character, separated by the castle headland. The North Bay, the quieter of the two, has the Sea Life centre, the delightful miniature railway, and a pedestrian promenade backed by colourful beach chalets, which can be hired by the day or the week. Close by is Peasholm Park and boating lake, complete with bandstand, and crazy golf, Northstead Manor Gardens, open air theatre and the indoor swimming pool.At the other end of the Marine Drive, the South Bay is the more traditional foreshore, with amusement arcades, fish and chip shops, and the famous Harbour Bar ice cream parlour with original 1950s decor and award-winning dairy ice cream. After wandering round the harbour and marina, try the steep walk uphill to the castle and the path around the outside of the castle walls will reward you with wonderful views out to sea and down to Filey Brigg. The castle is open to visitors and managed by English Heritage. Just outside its walls is the church of St. Mary where you can see Anne Brontes grave. Returning through the town to the seafront you may pass the Stephen Joseph Theatre . Walk across the Spa Bridge from the town centre to the Esplanade and the South Cliff for a wealth of Victorian architecture and lovely gardens.

“Ideally placed for a super holiday and a real pleasure to use the new bathroom and kitchen.”

Reviewed 10 Nov 2016

An excellent welcome package was much appreciated. A good comfortable home. Shame that the garden had not been done for some time though, but that was no problem.

Owner's reply: Thank you for taking the time to post a review. I am very pleased that you enjoyed your holiday and hope to welcome you again. Best wishes, Sue
