A two hectare 'wilderness' area with meandering paths, tyre swings and a climbing rope has been created for older children to explore, make dens or play hide & seek.

An extensive information pack will be available at the villa, Quinta dos Almarjoes, reflecting our 47 year knowledge of the area, allowing you to experience more to your holiday than most tourists.

Indoors: In addition to those items listed under Features & Facilities (below), the living room which is extremely spacious (7m x 9m) has a wood burner and wide French windows which open out onto a terrace and gardens. A well-appointed kitchen includes enough plates, glasses and cutlery to entertain 12 people. Cool bags and picnic equipment are also available. A separate laundry area with a washing machine and small terrace for drying clothes is conveniently situated in a courtyard just outside the kitchen door.

Bedroom 1 is large with a king-sized bed and fitted wardrobes. Bedroom 2 has a single bed, bunk-beds and fitted wardrobes. Bedroom 3 has twin beds and its own French windows leading to terrace and gardens. All the bedrooms have cooling fans and wooden floors.

Outdoors: Terraces are featured on the north, east and south sides with seating available in shaded areas and sun-loungers for those who enjoy the sun. For al fresco dining there is a BBQ near the pool and close to the covered dining area.

A large lawned area for ball games has also been created with a football goal and badminton net available. We have designed the gardens with children in mind, so there is plenty of space to play. Our thoughts are; if the children have a great holiday - then so do the parents!

The villa has no steps within it and the main terraces are spacious and level. The entrance to the house does have a few steps down to the terrace, although with notice, we will ensure that a temporary ramp is made available. The gardens have been created with ramps instead of steps although the paths are gravel based.

Location description from owner

The Algarve region

Western Algarve enjoys wonderful hot summers and sunny warm springs and autumns. It’s rich in Iberian and Moorish influences and hasn't lost the Portuguese traditions that make it a unique holiday on the south west tip of Europe.

Beautiful unspoilt beaches, traditional villages with a simple slow way of life.

The Algarve with its endless beaches, impeccable golf courses and wonderful climate is the perfect holiday destination. Rich in history, the quaint and the luxurious side by side, natural beauty, great food and a warm welcome charm all visitors.

Burgau

The villa is situated in a protected Nature Reserve and therefore is secluded and unspoilt, with no development permitted in the vicinity. During the spring, walks around the property are outstanding, as this part of the Algarve becomes a botanist's dream. Our knowledge of the region can assist in researching specific interests. My parents wrote numerous books and articles on birdwatching, wildlife, arts & crafts and the cultural traditions of Portugal and Spain.

Beaches:

The choices of beaches is endless - all beautiful, but all different - from the family friendly beaches of Burgau, Luz, Salema and Lagos to the Internationally acclaimed wild beaches of the West Coast which are a surfer's paradise, awe inspiring and invariably almost deserted even in high summer.

Local villages and towns:

Burgau is a small and picturesque fishing village with narrow streets tumbling down to a slipway lined with colourful fishing boats. This bay is flanked by spectacular cliffs and offers a family friendly beach, restaurants and shops. A three minute drive or an easy 30 minute walk from the villa. The Burgau Sports Centre has tennis courts, squash courts, a swimming pool which is heated during winter months and also offers children's activities.

The beautiful and lively village of Luz offers water sports, a wide beach and more restaurants and night life. The attractive and historic town of Lagos with its Marina and walled town and dramatic beaches offers large shops, cafes and great night life. Sagres, the most south westerley point in Europe, is a 20 minute drive west. Inland there are many traditional villages barely touched by tourism with a way of life unchanged by progress.

Activities:

Sports available locally include horse riding, water sports, tennis, scuba-diving, archery, deep-sea fishing, jeep safaris, gyms, boat trips and spectacular walks both inland and along coastal paths. Water Parks and Zoomarine are approximately a 40 minute drive, with Lagos Zoo only 15 minutes away.

During the summer months there are many events occurring throughout the Algarve. One that we can highly recommend is FIESA International Sand Sculpture Festival at Armacao de Pera.

Go-karting:

A new Autodrome has recently opened, around a 25 minute drive away, between the towns of Lagos and Portimao. It is considered to be the most advanced in the world and the top racing teams are using it for testing purposes prior to the Formula 1 season. It is hoped it will become part of the Formula 1 circuit by 2018. At present it holds International Superbike championships and other racing car events. There is also an International Go-Kart circuit which is available for the general public to enjoy.

Golf:

The Algarve is renowned for its top golf courses and there are five courses within close proximity:

Parque da Floresta is a 5-10 minute drive away and is a 18 Holes Par 72. It is a spectacular, although hilly course and can be challenging for beginners as it has been carved out of the hilly landscape. Boavista is a 10 minute drive away and is a 18 Holes Par 71. The course is integrated into the natural terrain overlooking Lagos and Monchique mountains. Palmares is a 15 minute drive and is an 18 holes Par 72, combining links-style golf on the first nine holes with a slightly more hilly back nine. It has breathtaking scenery and is renowned for its annual Almond Blossom tournament week in February. Penina is a 20 minute drive away and has an 18 hole Championship course Par 73, a 9 hole resort Par 35 and a 9 hole Academy course Par 30. It was laid out by Sir Henry Cotton.

“Perfect!”

Reviewed 19 Aug 2016

There are very few holidays places that I return to but this area of the Algarve is the exception having stayed in the Burgau and Salema areas for more than 10 years. We love the peace and tranquility and always look for accommodation that offers that. Quinta dos Almarjoes had everything that we were looking for in abundance and so much more. Set within the Parque Natural the property is surrounded by beautiful countryside. The villa does not have the feel of a holiday home but rather it felt like we had been given the privilege to stay in someone's home. So many personal touches and enough books, DVDs and games to occupy anyone. Thank you! We will be back!!

“So great we've visited twice!”

Reviewed 23 Jul 2016

We stayed at Quinta dos Almajoes last year and had such a great time we made a return visit. Absolutely great for young children as the pool is fenced/gated so worries of small ones falling in are erased. The grounds are beautiful with lots of lovely plants/cacti and the wilderness area is great for kids to explore. The villa itself is spacious, clean and has everything that you need for your stay - even buckets and spades to take to the many beautiful beaches. We enjoyed some lovely, warm, relaxing evenings outside with a BBQ. There are lots of board games for evening entertainment as well as games for little ones. There is a supermarket 5 mins drive away where you will find all provisions you need (including very tasty local wine). Every nearby beach we have visited has been clean, quiet and beautiful and there are many lovely restaurants for lunches/dinners with a wide range of options. The seafood was always great everywhere we went. Couldn't recommend this enough, well worth a visit!

“Fantastic villa for those with young children. Near lovely sheltered and quiet beach!”

Reviewed 26 Jun 2012

We stayed here at the end of June with another family and had a lovely time. The beach at Burgau is the best for miles around as is really quiet and unspoilt with fairly easy parking and a beach bar. The villa is in lovely rural location and the gardens are great for the children to explore. There aren't any steps and a secure gated pool so really relaxing for parents of toddlers. The villa is also really well stocked.
