Location description from owner

The Algarve region

The western Algarve is still one of Portugal's hidden secrets. From the tranquility of it's sheltered southern beaches and harbours, to the wilder more rugged west coast with it's spectacular surf, it has some fantastic places to explore.

Boasting an average of 270 days of sunshine each year, this region is a sun-seeker and beach-lover's paradise. It consists of rolling landscapes, picturesque hamlets and fishing villages, as well as towns steeped in maritime heritage. Unlike some areas of the wider Algarve, this region is delightfully unspoilt and untouched by commercialization. Open air markets are held each week where locals trade their fresh produce and wares.

The largest of the nearby towns is Lagos with it's culture and history dating back to Roman times. It was from here in 1514 that Prince Henry the Navigator launched his fleet to seize Ceuta in Morocco setting the stage for Portugal's age of discovery. The town is a maze of cobbled streets with pavement restaurants, cafés and bars.

To the west of Villa do Afonso is the port of Sagres with it's dramatic headland – Cape St Vincent which is the most south westerly point of Europe.

SURFING IN THE WILD WEST COAST

Whilst the southern coast's beaches are beautiful and surfing is possible, the west coast is definitely worth a look. Praia Carrapeteira is a mecca for surfers. At just 30 mins drive from Burgau this glorious sweeping beach offers crashing surf and wonderful vistas. The cool air of the Atlantic can also be welcome during the hotter summer months.

Praia Armada near Carrapateira is also another favourite. You can take lessons on long boards here and enjoy jaw-dropping views over the Atlantic. From here, try the old shack which sells great fried prawns and grilled fish on the dirt track road from Praia Armada to Carrepeteira.

A GOLFER'S PARADISE

There are 14 golf courses within 30 minutes drive of Villa do Afonso, making this location one of the best in the entire Algarve for keen golfers. The Algarve itself is one of Europe's premier golf destinations, with over twenty courses west of Faro, including some of the top championship courses in Europe. Warm playing conditions and immaculately manicured fairways and greens are the norm.

Burgau

A short stroll…

There is plenty to do when staying at Villa do Afonso. Try the beach bar at Cabanas Velhos beach, just down the road which faces the villa. It's right on the beach, serves charcoal grilled fish, clams, burgers and superb pasta dishes. Also, superior take-away club sandwiches to eat on the beach ! From here, coastal paths flow east to Burgau and west to Salema, both perfect for working up an appetite for lunch.

Burgau, Salema & further...

Within walking distance is Burgau, a traditional fishing village which has retained is culture and charm. There are lots of little shops including a fantastic bakery and welcoming grocery shop, but is Burgau's range of restaurants which is one of its biggest fortés. After having a few pre-dinner drinks in a choice of sea-view bar-cafes a wide choice of food is at your fingertips.

The Hut in the village square has stunning views over Burgau beach and serves large, fried piri-piri prawns; charcoal grilled sardines, swordfish and clams in olive oil and lemon or cataplana (clams with fried pork). Nearby, The Anchora is a highly regarded French restaurant. Also, in the square is a restaurant serving traditional Italian Pizza, cooked in a wood oven.

Just along the road from The Hut, you'll find the Veranda Bar, which serves freshly squeezed orange juice, expresso coffee, local beers and wines and some wonderful cocktails – with a jaw-dropping view over Burgau beach and out to sea.

The Burgau Beach Bar - on the beach at Burgau – is another popular spot for obvious reasons. Great food and an unbeatable view. The Caravela, a Portuguese restaurant on the back road in Burgau, offers succulent steaks cooked on stone and has an amazing wine list.

Salema to the west is an old fishing village with a lovely sandy beach, ideal for children. The Atlantico is a large wooden building alongside the beach serving wonderful swordfish, prawns, steaks and chicken on a spit. Open lunch and dinner. A great place for a pre-lunch swim!

Other beaches and coastal towns to explore include Martinhal near Sagres, Zavial and Figueria which has some great spots for snorkelling, caves and sheltered bathing.

The Westernmost Point in Europe…

Cape St. Vincent, the furthest place west in Europe, offers breathtaking vistas of the Atlantic with often 20ft waves crashing up the side of the cliffs. Nearby Sagres, an old town reeking of history, before you reach Cape St. Vincent, has some fantastic seafood restaurants. The mountains of Monchique are also worth a visit, as are the old Moorish towns of Silves, Sagres and Aljezur.
