Location description from owner

The County Donegal region

Bundoran nestles in the northwest of Ireland just 9 miles from the border of Northern Ireland and is Donegal's most southerly town. Tourism has been the lifeblood of the town for as long as it cares to remember and indeed it was Viscount Enniskillen who first brought the seaside resort to the attention of others when he built Bundoran Lodge in 1777. The healing power of the wild Atlantic Ocean on Bundoran's doorstep was just one of the many draws for visitors as were the natural sea stacks known as the Fairy Bridges complete with their own “wishing chair”! This extract from the short-lived newspaper “The Liberator” in 1839 said 'No place on the North-West coast of Ireland, can present so cheerful an appearance, during the summer months, as this village; it is the rendezvous of the rank and fashion of all the adjoining counties-enlivened by myriads of bright scenes, sweet sounds, and sights of beauty'. If the Bundoran of 2013 could boast surfing as an industry then it would be high on our portfolio. In 2011, for the third time in the competition's history, the European Surfing Championships were held at the seaside town which boasts the natural amenities of world class reef and beach breaks as well as all the ancillary hospitality, catering and entertainment required for an event of this significance on the European calendar. Being so close to the border, the town has always had a special relationship with visitors from Northern Ireland with the resort proving a popular destination for hundreds of years, helped in part by the Great Northern Railway line which ran from Enniskillen and transported thousands of holiday makers on a daily basis up until its closure in 1957. One wonders what they would make of today's multitude of pubs, restaurants, and entertainment venues as well as the now 22 year old and ever popular Waterworld facility with over a million visitors to date – Ireland's largest indoor water park which has recently undergone an almost €2m facelift to become more energy efficient and to install 5 new family friendly features including a toddler pool, galleon ship, gravity speed slide, 3 lane multi slide and aqua children's slide.

“Comfortable, clean & excellent views”

Reviewed 4 Jun 2014

Stayed here for the duration of the Rory Gallagher festival. House was spotless on arrival. Electric showers, TV etc. all there. Very handy for Ballyshannon too - about 10 mins in a taxi. Would recommend to anyone.
