Location description from owner

The Abruzzo region

Abruzzo's eastern border is marked by vast sandy beaches stretching along the Adriatic, both north and south of Pescara. Go west from the coast and you will soon enter the hills, which rise quickly to become the beautiful Abruzzo mountains. This area is one of the largest and most important National Parks in Europe and it is dotted with some of the least visited hill towns in Italy.

Bugnara

Bugnara is a medieval village with all the amenities. It has a hotel with its own restaurant and three bars, one of which serves freshly cooked food, two alimentari (grocery shops), a chemist and four churches. There are a number of public seating areas in Bugnara where you can sit and enjoy the scenery whilst soaking up the sun, or enjoying the shade, and quietly watching the world go by, including a small play park for children. There is a regular bus service to the surrounding area, including Sulmona and Scanno. Just outside the village, but within easy walking distance, is a donkey sanctuary where you can visit the donkeys.

The village is well situated for visiting Abruzzo and is only a few minutes drive off the motorway. Bugnara is only a five minute drive away from Sulmona which has an abundance of quaint little shops where you can purchase fine leather, jewellery and regional crafts and also a range of supermarkets where you can purchase all the provisions you may need during your stay. It has an array of cafes, restaurants and trattorias that specialize in the rich regional cucina d'Abruzzo and many fine buildings and churches. Sulmona is also known for its confetti, the sugar coated almonds known worldwide. From Sulmona regular buses and trains will take you to Rome, Pescara and other cities. The beach at Pescara is only a short walk from the train station.

Sulmona has a lively market in the main square each Wednesday and Saturday and here you can buy all manner of local produce and also clothes, household items etc. It is well worth visiting on market days for the atmosphere of the town. There is a large calendar of events in both Sulmona and the surrounding villages, including Bugnara itself. The Easter celebrations and Giostra (International Jousting Competitions) in July and August are particularly impressive and the town is alive with colourful medieval pagentry parades.

The area has a vast selection of outdoor activities including walking, touring and skiing - a paradise for lovers of outdoor pursuits. There are both easy and challenging walks in the various National Parks which will suit all walkers. There are also walks around the lake at Scanno where you can also choose to rent a pedalo or covered bicycle for four if you prefer activity of the seated kind! Then there is the beach at Pescara - Abruzzo really does have something for everyone.

“Lovely house, beautiful views, in a quiet and friendly village.”

Reviewed 19 Jul 2012

This is a lovely family holiday home .It more than adequately housed our family of 6, including 3 grown up children , and a 3 year old grandchild. It has everything we required. The kitchen/ dining room has all the appliances needed. The lounge is comfortable and spacious. Both rooms have lovely views across the valley. Upstairs the 2 bedrooms have french windows to the rear, and being higher up have better views across the valley and to the hills beyond. The bedrooms are comfortable and spacious. Both bedrooms have beautiful en-suite bathrooms. The house is situated in a very friendly village 4 miles from the Sulmona, the main town in the area. The village has 2 shops and 3 bars. one of them sells prosecco on draught ! We were advised to hire a car to get around, but managed quite well on the local bus, although they aren't very frequent. There's a nice hill walk above the village. We had a lovely relaxing holiday.

“Clean, spacious, well appointed”

“the house was freshly refurbed and comfortable, but it was not prepared for our arrival”

Reviewed 11 Aug 2011

the linen and towels were new and so were all the fittings and facilities, but it looked like it had been empty for several months, the whole house was covered in dust and cobwebs, and we had to clean the whole house,it only took a couple of hours, but its what you expect to do at the end of your stay not at the start, although the boiler had been switched on we had cold showers for the first 2 days, till the agent sorted it out,(lovely lady thank you lorna) she was very helpful and made our stay easier, the house could do with a terrace or a balcony as there is nowhere to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful panoramic views and sun, also not recommended for anybody with difficulty walking as it is quite a trek to the car park, especially if carrying cases etc(steep steps ),and if you have kids with you it could probably do with a tv/dvd player, but the local people are very friendly and polite and helpful ,the bar/cafe serves excellent food, simple fare but very good and reasonably priced(lovely t bone steaks) ,the location is very good for exploring the region, and easy to get to from any of the airports, overall i enjoyed my stay but we were out most of the time, the house is perfectly good but overpriced compared to other rentals in the village due to no outdoor areas,

Owner's reply: We are very sorry that you felt that Casa Mardi was not as clean as you would have liked - we ourselves have very high standards of cleanliness and are very disappointed by this. We checked with our agent,Lorna, as we always do before the arrival of our guests and she assured us on the day before you arrived that the apartment had been fully cleaned ready for your arrival. She has subsequently confirmed that this was indeed the case. We have made her aware of your views and are would like to reassure you that every effort is made to ensure that the apartment is clean for the arrival of guests. The boiler is a pressurised one and there are full instructions in the apartment for guests to follow when they arrive but we are also now highlighting those instructions to guests before their arrival to assist their understanding of the system. The house is not advertised with outside space. With our best regards.
