"Great apartment in Buenos Aires"
Short version of the review: I highly recommend this studio for a single traveler, two friends, or a couple (the bed is configurable between two separate twin beds or one combined bed). Eugenia is extremely helpful as a huge bonus. Go ahead and make the booking, you won't regret it. The rest of this review is somewhat long but I feel necessary to do justice to how much Eugenia helped us. My wife and I arranged for "taxi Eugenia" to pick us up at the airport for a very reasonable fee. It was great to be greeted at the airport after a long trip from Toronto. Her mom was also there and is a funny and interesting person. It was great to immediately get to talk to a couple of Buenos Aires natives. We also got a short driving tour of the key nearby landmarks on the way to the apartment. The apartment is true to the posted photos and was absolutely spotless. It is a charming modern place with a nice understated style that Eugenia actually renovated herself. The air conditioner worked perfectly even on the hottest day we were there when the outside temperature went up to 102F (39C). The apartment was our refuge from the blazing heat. Eugenia makes available at the apartment a universal AC power adapter and also provides you with a cell phone with her contact numbers in case you need to contact her (for example, she told us to call her if we needed help ordering a taxi). We didn't need to use the phone, so I emailed her and she was very responsive in answering my questions. Fast WiFi Internet is available at the studio and my wife and I had no problems connecting with an iPad and Android tablet. Upon arrival at the apartment, Eugenia helped us confirm our tango show reservations (I don't know Spanish, so I had exchanged some confusing emails with the tango place using Google translate). She also helped us call a whole bunch of closed-door restaurants (puertas cerradas, a recent development in Buenos Aires) and even made more calls on our behalf later that evening. Sadly, I left it too late and the places were all booked due to the fact we were there after Christmas and before New Year's Eve, a high time for eating out apparently. If you are interested in a closed-door restaurant, I suggest you do your research early and consider booking in advance of arriving. A valuable service that Eugenia provided was assistance in navigating the exchange of US dollars at the so-called "blue" rate or street rate, which is the best rate for tourists. We brought enough US dollars with us to cover all our expenses. At the time of our travel in January 2014, the blue rate got us about 50% more pesos per US dollar than the official exchange rate (we got 10 pesos instead of 6.7 pesos per US dollar). Converting US dollars at the blue rate instead of the official rate saved us hundreds of US dollars and more than paid for our stay at the studio. The studio is centrally located, close to Obelisco and the Opera House, close to the subway (Subte) with nearby convenience and grocery stores. There are nice looking hotels around. The area felt safe and there are also police in the neighborhood, due to the number of banks and government buildings in the vicinity. I took it as a good sign that every police officer we saw was either casually chatting, smoking, texting, or looking extremely bored. My wife and I ate late evening dinners within walking distance of the studio, walking both to the restaurants and back after dark with no problems. As with any trip abroad, we used common sense, such as preferring the most well lit streets with the most people. Finally, we also took Eugenia up on an offer of a driving tour (offered based on my questions/requests, she is not pushy at all) on our last day. We usually like to walk cities and we did on the previous days, but we wanted to switch to a tour bus or car for our final day to see as many of places we hadn't seen which were not that close together. After reading the reviews of the Yellow Tourist Bus (a double decker open-top hop-on hop-off bus) on TripAdvisor we went with Eugenia for a price similar to two tickets without the risk of the bus not running or waiting for hours for a bus. We went to La Boca, Palermo Soho, Palermo Hollywood, and Belgrano. Eugenia's mother also came along and would give us an idea of what neighborhoods were like when she was young and how they had changed, which was really interesting. At the end of the day, we got dropped off at the airport and headed off to Mendoza. All I expect from a local booking is a place that is honest to the photos, clean, and a host who might give a bit of advice. Eugenia went so over and above these requirement that it added a welcome local touch to a visit of a beautiful city. She and her mom are wonderful people and it was a pleasure to get to know them during our stay.
