The Sardinia region

Sardinia:
Long uninhabited, despite its ancient geological origin, Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and has an irresistibly geographical position. Sardinia has some of the finest beaches in the world, with beautiful white sands and clear blue sea.

Italian? yes but with a culture of its own that has developed over time, due to its position at the heart of the western Mediterranean Sea. The Island is mountainous and rugged and tourists should be encouraged to go inland and explore the fabulous scenery.

Calgiari is the capital and can be found in the South East of the island. Olbia in the North East is the area to visit for the most beautiful white sandy beaches, exclusive Hotels and Mariners all situated on the wonderful Costa Smeralda.

If you enjoy history and ancient archeological sites, then again Sardinia will satisfy your interests boasting for example the oldest building in Italy, dating back to pre-historic times as well as many more other sites.

Some of the following text is gratefully supplied by WikiTravel and other writers.

Sardinia, with its quintessential Mediterranean beauty, is mainly loved for swimming, boating, windsurfing, hiking, climbing, and camping, with coastal areas tending to become over populated especially in the warmest month, August.

The inner life of the island away from the tourist spots takes longer to appreciate and requires you to peel away the layers of apparent Italianization. After all, the ancient Nuragic civilization of Sardinia of ca. 1500 BC, whose stone monuments still dot the land, predates even the Etruscan civilization in mainland Italy by several hundred years.

Budoni

Caressed by the clear turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Budoni offers a plethora of Sardinian activities, attractions and delights to soak up and enjoy!
The picturesque, well-serviced resort village offers a wide array of amenities to complement your self-catering stay, with its many charming cafes, delightful shops and restaurants serving authentic island dishes, fresh seafood and international cuisine.
Its vast sandy beaches offer the perfect timeless amusement for couples, families and friends; with snorkelling, scuba diving lessons and classic sunbathing and beach fun to enjoy by day.
By night, Budoni offers a vibrant holiday experience, with its many cafes, bars and nightclubs on hand to offer a fun and buzzing appeal.

Home to a rich and thriving heritage, Budoni also enables visitors to be part of its many year-round events; from taking in the bonfire and wine tasting on the Feast of Sant' Antonio Abete 16th January, joining in the fun of the Carnival season throughout February, witnessing the humble rite of S' Incontru procession on Easter Sunday, enjoying the delicious sweet 'origliette' delicacies served on the feast of San Giovanni Battisti in June, and not forgetting dancing away at the most anticipated 'Ferragosto Budonese;' which sees street parties, night time entertainment and music fill the air.
From July-August the streets are also made car-free and safe in the evenings, to make way for a lively market which sells a wealth of local Sardinian products, gifts and delectable delicacies to take home.

Whilst water sport fans, nature lovers and beach babes can take in the breathtaking pine forests, inviting sandy coastline and rocky coves of Budoni, history fans can also enjoy visiting Posada's medieval castle and exploring the many incredible 'Nuraghe' structures, which are dotted around the surrounding landscape.

Budoni offers close proximity to the fabulous harbour side, boat trips and restaurants on offer in Porto Ottiolu (11 minutes drive) and the popular resort of San Teodoro (14 minutes drive). Beautiful Olbia, with its ferry links and airport can also be reached within a 30 minutes drive from Budoni.
