The Central Hungary region
Budapest, one of the most beautiful historical capitals in Europe, is situated on the banks of the Danube. The city actually consists of three cities: Óbuda, the oldest section, with Celtic and Roman ruins, Buda in hills on the western bank, famous for its historic Castle Hill and beautiful residential area, and bustling Pest with its shopping, government and commercial districts on the flat plain of the east bank. United in 1873, Budapest is renowned as the location of one of the most beautiful World Heritage sites.
Only Budapest can say of itself that it has Europe's largest Parliament, largest functioning synagogue and the continent's first underground railway. The architectural beauty with its monuments from neo-classic through baroque to eclectic art nouveau is prevalent in the city. Budapest is also world famous for its artistic abundance of concerts, operas, recitals, galas, exhibitions and spa baths.
Do as Budapesters do and unwind over strong coffee and sweet cake in an old, cozy café. There were more than 400 coffeehouses in Budapest at the turn of the 20th century, attracting everyone from soldiers and aristocrats to poets and actors, and some of the best are still in business today. The warm hospitality of people, excellent food and wine, reliable and frequent public transportation, vivid cultural life, rich museums, attract millions of visitors every year.
5. District - Inner City
This is the heart of the city embraced by two bridges (the Chain Bridge and Liberty Bridge) and by Deák tér. You'll find many attractions here. Historic Pest was here, you can see remains of the city wall in Kecskeméti utca.
The famous pedestrian shopping area, Váci Street cuts through the district, with the Great Market Hall at its one end, and Vörösmarty tér on the other end. Váci utca and the neighboring streets are the chief shopping centre of Budapest, with many gift and Fashion shops. This area has many eateries ranging from gourmet places like Onyx (part of the Gerbeaud House) at Vörösmarty tér. Walk along Dunakorzó (Danube Promenade) and enjoy the beautiful view of the Danube and the Castle Hill.
5. district is also a business quarter with several major banks, government ministries and the grandiose Budapest Parliament on Kossuth tér. Budapest biggest church, St. Stephen's Basilica stands also in this district.
Public transport is excellent in this area. The three Budapest Metro lines converge at Ferenc Deák Square where the Blue and Red lines meet the Millennium Underground Railway (yellow). There are several bus, tram and trolleybus lines in this area. Tram No 2 runs along the Pest side of the Danube. You can get a fine view of Gellért hill and Castle from here.
