The Andalucia region
Las Alpujarras is an area declared to be of Special Cultural Interest by the Spanish Government. Dotted with Berber-style architecture; little white box-shaped houses with flat grey roofs and chestnut beams, it is a region of challanging high-level snowline walks, or casual wanderings on goat tracks around the gentler valleys.
The villages were created around where the important Mulberry trees grew as they were used for feeding the silk worms to then produce fine silks whch were made in Almeria on the coast.
The Poqueira Gorge encompases Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira; three white villages perched on the edge of impressive hillsides leading up to Mulhacen, the highest peak in mainland Spain.
In more recent times, the focus has changed from the silk worm to Ham -Drying.: the air is so dry here that it is the perfect place to air-dry the famous Iberian Hams which are exported around the world.
A visit to the area would not be complete without tapas in the local bar with crusty bread and thin slivers of this much-loved delicacy.
Bubion is perfect for walking or relaxing as there are several marked paths starting from the village and equally, there are several good bars and restaurants from which one can watch the world go by while listening to the distant sound of sheep and goat bells as the local shepherds walk their flocks.
The streets are often no wider than the width of a laden mule and narrow passageways twist and turn through a labyrinth of cobbled paths. It is especially lovely when balconies are filled with sprawling geraniums, adding great splashes of colour against the stark white.
An interesting museum can be found in the main square by the church which explains about the birth and life of the villages in the area.
Bubion has a multi-purpose sports field for tennis, basketball and football.
There is a very nice public swimming pool 7k´s away. It has shady lawn areas and trees and also a restaurant so it is a great place to chill out.
