The Tasmania region

Bruny Island is a hot spot these days with numerous artisan makers producing delicious food and wine. The island is known for incredible vistas and remarkable landscapes, extraordinary wildlife, endemic birds, boat cruises, boating, kayaking, bike riding, world class surf, the annual ultra marathon, beach sailing, sailing, fishing, whale watching, history and endless photographic opportunities. Dont miss an opportunity to see the island at its summer best. The island is located in the south east corner Tasmania and is accessed by the ferry, Mirambeena. She departs from Kettering a tiny seaside village forty minutes south from Hobart. Drive into the appropriate lane and pay as you board, no previous booking is necessary. The relaxing journey takes about twenty minutes with visitors and locals alike enjoying the ride either remaining in their vehicles or communing with other passengers. You may even get lucky and catch the antics of playful dolphins riding her bow wave whilst your ride sets the tone for your island experience. For your trip to Bruny Island you will require your car or a hired vehicle. Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty and are all available in Tasmania and at arrangements can be made at the airport. AVIS though available in Tasmania does not allow their vehicles to travel to Bruny Island. Pick up a free Bruny Island map and visitor guide from the Visitor Centre adjacent to the ferry terminal prior to boarding to learn more about our island and its services. An ATM machine is conveniently located outside and the Mermaid Cafe overlooking the marina is a colourful spot for a coffee or lunch prior to your ferry crossing. Please ensure you have CASH for the ferry fare.

Bruny Island

We acknowledge the Alonnah-Lunawanna Nueononne people, the Traditional Owners of the land on which we live, are custodians and work to protect. Prior to European settlement Bruny Island was the home of a small band of Aborignal people known as the Nuenonne. The famous Tasmanian woman Trugernanner - Truganini, daughter of Mangerner - Chief Mangana and leader of the band, died at the age of sixty four. Truganini was married to Wooreddy whom she met at the island mission conducted by George Agustus Robinson. The Nuenonne called Bruny Island Lunawannaalonna, today these names refer to two separate villages on the west coast of the island.

Twenty years ago, Bruny Island was a sleepy little island with descendants of the first european settlers making up the community. Today the secret is well and truly out and the population has grown. Internet technology has brought into view the beauty and charm of this historical island where explorers made their first port of call. Visitors from the world over make their way here having read about its clean air, flora, abundance of wildlife, beautiful vistas, walks, delicious produce, friendly locals, long beaches and world class surf. Time just seems to fade when you arrive.
