The Flanders region

Flanders is the Flemish part of Belgium. Dutch is the official language although most people speak excellent English. An area steeped in history with many beautiful medieval cities. You can visit the award winning and thought provoking war museums or the many art galleries and magnificent churches.

On the other hand you may just want to chill out on the 40km of white sandy beaches. Horse riding, cycling, sand yachting and water sports can all be catered for.

Belgium is famous for its beer and chocolate not to mention lace; all these can be found in Flanders. Belgians enjoy their food and there are more Michelin star restaurants in Belgium than in France!

Bruges

Bruges has been described as the 'Venice of the north'. This medieval city has been perfectly preserved and the network of canals and bridges criss crossed with cobbled streets will transport you back 500 years. Small bars and restaurants abound where you can sample the delights of local food or try some of the 300 Belgian beers.

A short walk around the magnificent churches and ancient monuments not to mention the labyrinth of small streets will make you understand how the entire city centre was recently declared a world heritage site. You can take a boat tour of the city's canals or a horse and carriage ride through the network of picturesque streets. Many people just enjoy getting lost and stumbling upon some hidden gem.

Cycling is a very good way to explore the city as well as the surrounding villages. If the children fancy a change of scenery a trip to the local dolphinarium and theme park is a must. The white sandy beaches of Blankenburg, Zebrugge and Ostend are only a few miles away, as is the exclusive resort town of Knokke Hiest.. Whilst a car is convenient for travelling around Bruges and Flanders it is not necessary as the public transport system is very well organized and easy to use.

There are many festivals and pageants throughout the year, making every season special. The Tourist Information bureau will have information on all of these.

“Lovely house in good location”

Reviewed 7 Jun 2013

We stayed in The Red House in May 13, family of 5 (kids age 7-12). The house was lovely, well equipped with lots of info about Bruges and Belgium. We also used secure parking which is just round corner and was very handy. House is about 10-15 min walk from centre of Bruges. Would definitely use again if returning to Bruges.

“self catering fully provided for”

Reviewed 1 Apr 2013

Our first stay in Bruges and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The red house is in a great location 10 minutes walk from the market and on a small sideroad so there is not a lot of traffic passing. A couple of good bars nearby if you don't want to walk far for some of that wonderful Belgian beer. The house had everything you could need to cook your own meals and everything was spotlessly clean. Also I would point out that taking your own bedding does give you plenty of packing material for bringing back the odd sample bottle. We will be returning as soon as we can.

“Fantastic accomodation and Great location in the centre of Brugge”

Could not have asked for anything more!! a fantastic location only a 5-10 min walk from the famous bell tower. The accomodation was fantastic although the steep stairs are a challenge after a few strong belgium beers.

“Fantastic accomodation in a fabulous city.”

My wife and I went to Bruges with our 10 yr old daughter and had a brilliant time. The Red House was perfect and very conveniently situated about 10 minutes walk or so from the Markt. The house had everything you could need and was spotlessly clean. We initially were worried as the price was on the cheap side of reasonable - we needn't have worried as the house is worth much more. There is a great little bar/restaurant next to the nearby windmills too if you don't fancy going to the city centre. We never visit the same place twice, as you only have so many holidays in you and it would be a shame not to explore more - however, we'll make an exception for the Red House and hope to return again soon. “The beautiful house”

We had a fantastic time in Brugge! We all enjoyed being able to just cycle into town, the house is perfectly located for strolls along the canal, cycle rides to Damme and access to restaurants, shopping and museums. Everything about the house was perfect for our needs. Equipment and furnishings to make it a very comfortable and convienent stay. Excellent location and extremely easy to book through Richard - who provided excellent information. Would definately reccommend for a stay in Brugge!!!

“Fabulous house in excellent location”

Reviewed 17 Apr 2012

We had a wonderful stay at the Red house with our 5 and 14 year as well as granny. Our stay was everything we hoped for and more. The house itself was spotless and so well equipped and nicely decorated. The bedrooms were all well appointed with plenty of storage space and the double bedroom at the top of the house was superb - very romantic! There were loads of things available for our use like sugar, coffee and toilet paper as well as dvds, books and bicycles that just made life that little bit easier. The location was perfect, in a really quiet cobbled street but just a few minutes comfortable walk into town. An added bonus was the nearby park for my five year old to run around in after eating all that chocolate! Richard, the owner was friendly and helpful every step of the way and gave us loads of information for our stay. I can't recommend this house enough - we will definitely be back!

“everything you need, everything you want and more!”

Reviewed 10 Mar 2012

The house is comfortable and well equipped, There are loads of DVD’s to meet everyone’s taste, tons of games and books catering for all ages (my 5, 12 and 18 year olds were very happy with the entertainment provided) The local information provided before arrival is excellent and you'll know exactly what to expect and where to go, where to shop etc. The house is on a wonderful cobbled street and you really feel like you are living in history. Everything is a short and interesting walk away, we spent days wondering around looking and marvelling. The garage is very close to the house and extremely handy.

“Absolutely the best place to stay in Bruges”

Reviewed 14 Nov 2011

After following the most comprehensive and helpful directions ever written (provided by the owners) we arrived at the Red House. It really is a wonderful find, excellent level of decor and spotlessly clean. The owners have kindly provided lots of little extras, tea, coffee, toilet paper etc. It is ideally located close to the canal and one of the beautiful windmills, extremely picturesque. Parking is available right by the house so that was never a problem and we used the provided bikes every day to explore this wonderful city. The house is in walking distance to the town centre which is perfect for an evening meal out. The owners have provided lots of maps and guide books so we were never short of ideas for things to do. Absolutely the best place to stay in Bruges! We will definitely be back.

“A fantastic find - comfortable and a real 'home from home'”

Reviewed 4 Sep 2011

This is a brilliant place to stay - a short stroll through Bruges' charming and picturesque streets to all the main sites/sights! The house, although small, had everything we needed and was furnished tastefully and comfortably. We in particular had been a little concerned about parking in peak season, but we were advised by the more-than-helpful owners that normally there was ample parking nearby, and we had absolutely no trouble parking right by the house which was a bonus. The house made a fantastic base from which to explore Bruges and the surrounding area, and was lovely to come home to at the end of the day. Our children are 9,12 and 15 and they all thought it was a 'cool' place, and we hope to return as there are still so many things we didn't get round to doing. Would highly recommend The Red House as a place to stay.
