Description from owner

The Cottage takes advantage of its beautiful setting with large French doors opening from the living-room onto a private decked area and garden.. Each bedroom has an en-suite bath or shower room and all rooms have wonderful views of hills and fields. You can literally count sheep to get to sleep or enjoy looking at the stars from your bed!

The Cottage forms part of a former telephone exchange and was just converted in 2006, so everything is new and fresh!

It is situated beside the famous River Tweed and close to Megget, Talla ,Fruid and St Mary's Lochs so there is ample opportunity for fishing, wind-surfing, canoeing and other water sports. The cottage is a great base from which to explore Scotland. Although situated in the heart of the country, there are excellent road links to Edinburgh (45 mins), and Glasgow (90 mins) whilst the English Lake District is only 90 minutes away.

Further details indoors

The gas powered underfloor heating means that the cottage is always warm and cosy even on the coldest winter day, while the views can be enjoyed from each room. It is lovely to sit in comfort and admire the snow-covered garden and hills as we did this year!

The garden attracts many birds including blue tits, robins and even a woodpecker, and you can sit and watch then at the feeder in your private garden.

The Scottish Borders region

The Scottish Borders area is famous for its history of independence and battles. This has left a legacy of museums, castles and local festivals such as the Reivers festival in Hawick.

Many of these castles and historic houses are open to the public including Traquair Hiuse near Peebles which is the oldest continually inhabited house in Scotland. It was home to Sir Walter Scott who loved the rolling hills and wonderful views. It is a largely rural area with small, individual towns but yet within easy reach of Edinburgh and Newcastle.

There are wonderful gardens to explore at the historic houses and also at Dawyck Botanic garden (10 mins from cottage) The wildlife is abundant in this rural area with several types of deer, otters, badgers, and an amazing variety of birds including herons, kingfishers, ospreys, peregrine falcons, and even golden eagles!

Hill walking is very popular in the area and with almost unlimited access to the countryside the walker has the chance to roam and experience nature. The lochs and the famous River Tweed provide opportunities for sailing, wind-surfing and canoeing as well as fishing which is a very popular activity.

Mountain biking has become extremely popular in the area with world class courses in Peebles and Innerleithen (7stanes) while there are forest tracks for more gentle off-road biking and quiet country lanes for road cycling. After all that outdoor activity you can relax at the luxurious spa and beauty facilities at centres like Stobo Castle or Peebles Hydro.

Altogether there is an abundance of activities and facilities to make a holiday here relaxing or exciting and challenging but never dull!

Broughton

Broughton is a small village set in rolling hills about 7 minutes' drive from the cottage. it has a shop, garage/post-office, brewery, school, play-ground and tennis-court as well as a bistro bar which is open till late evening every day and serves delicious home-cooked food at reasonable prices. There is also an art gallery, museum and a colourful garden open to the public. It was home to John Buchan who wrote "The Thirty-nine Steps" and became govenor-general of Canada. The museum and the John Buchan Way walking route to Peebles are dedicated to him.

Peebles is about 10 miles from Broughton and is a beautiful small town with the River Tweed running through it.

There are many wonderful walks as well as a golf-course,shops, restaurants, swimming-pool and leisure centre to enjoy. It also has art galleries and an art centre and every June has a week of celebrations called the Beltane which includes lots of public gatherings where there is music and horse-riding and a grand parade of floats and marching bands.

Horses are important in this area and Peebles has 2 riding schools. It has a castle (Neidpath) and near-by historic houses and lovely gardens to visit.

“A wonderfully tranquil break in the perfect location”

Reviewed 10 Sep 2012

The cottage was AMAZING........gorgeous setting with a wonderful garden which was enjoyed immensely......... On our arrival we were met by Jean whom had made us lovely freshly baked scones, which were wonderfully yummy!! The cottage is beautiful......... comfortable & homely and all you could need/want & sooooooo much more......... & the ensuite bathrooms, well........ the master bathroom had a bath to die for & the underfloor heating, just the business, as for the power shower, blasts the cobwebs off in the morning!!! The area is perfect for getting away from the hustle & bustle of the city, wonderful views/walks........... which we enjoyed & shall def. be returning. As we arrived on the Friday, it was an added bonus to discover that there was the local annual music festival on which was right on our doorstep, added bonus where there was a real sense of community spirit & everyone was so welcoming & hospitable. Tweedsmuir cottage was one of the best breaks we have had & cannot thank our hosts enough oh & the yummy chocolate cake which we sampled on the Saturday, again baked by Jean. Thank you again for everything & making our stay one to remember............ & not forgetting your lovely dog, Anna........... Angela & family xxxxx
