Location description from manager

The English Riviera region

Devon is a popular holiday destination in South west England. The scenery and climate have made the area a favoured destination for the past 250 years. Over that time much has changed, yet much of the character and many of the local traditions have remained.

The coast and countryside are still extraordinarily beautiful, which is why more than two thirds of South Devon is carefully protected as a national asset, either in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or as part of the Dartmoor National Park.

Brixham

A rapidly rising star in the West Country firmament, the traditional fishing harbour of Brixham is buzzing from early in the morning when the fish auctions are held, until late in the evening when seafood restaurants are filled with jolly diners and sea shanties can be heard in the local hostelries. This is traditional England at its best.

Brixham is a must to visit on any tour of the South West, particularly for foodies who can taste what is probably the freshest, biggest selection and highest quality of fish in the region. Brixham’s Award-Winning Fish Market Tours were voted into VisitEngland’s top 101 Things To Do Before You Go Abroad list and there is a great selection of reasonably priced seafood restaurants around the harbour.

A stunningly beautiful inner harbour provides fun for the whole family with a full sized replica of Sir Francis Drake’s Golden Hind to explore, an immersive 3D smugglers experience, The Smugglers Story, plus pirate days, arts and crafts markets and lots of festivals to enjoy. Relax amongst the waterside cafes & pubs and browse the ancient streets and lanes; there is always something fun going on in Brixham!

Strolling along the beautiful harbourside, past the statue of William of Orange who landed here in 1688 (spooky ghost tours start here), you come to Brixham Marina with rows and rows of beautiful yachts. Next you reach the half-mile long breakwater where you can stroll out to the lighthouse, sit on Breakwater Beach and enjoy a coffee, a cake or a meal in the stunningly located Breakwater Bistro right by the waterside.

Stroll along to Shoalstone Pool, a lovely open-air seawater pool with spectacular views of Tor Bay and the coastline and then, for the more energetic, you can walk on up to Berry Head National Nature Reserve on 200ft cliffs high above the town. Free to visit, there are Napoleonic Forts, spectacular views on three sides, wonderful bird watching with the largest colony of guillemots of the south coast, plus rare plants. Definitely worth a trip, this wonderful haven of history and wildlife has a great café, visitor centre and lighthouse to explore and you might spot a seal off the headland.

Heading east from Brixham Harbour, you can take a walk along the South West Coast Path past hidden coves and beaches to the long sandy beach at Broadsands with its gaily painted beach huts and where you can spot the steam train chugging past over Brunel’s famous Viaduct – a quintessentially English sight and great photo opportunity.

Brixham is the perfect place for both a short visit and a longer stay and noted for its warm welcome, with friendly locals providing you with a truly memorable holiday experience.
