Location description from owner

The Basse-Normandie region

La Suisse Normande doesn't have much in common with Switzerland: there are no ski slopes, glaciers or Alpine meadows. What this part of Normandy does have are delightful green hills, sparkling rivers, exquisite villages, rich pastures and tranquil countryside. It is one of the loveliest parts of the Duchy for a leisurely drive or a vigorous cycle ride. For walkers or canoeists, this is the region to explore.

Breel

The Suisse Normande follows the twists and turns of the Orne valley, full of quaint little towns and villages with cobbled market squares and little hotels and cafes. There are ample places to explore on foot or by cycle. The land mark Roche d'Oetre is only 5kms from the gite- a striking crag of rock jutting up above the valley of the Rouvre, giving spectacular views - and is the nearest thing to a mountain in Suisse Normande. Thury-Harcourt is one of the busiest little tourist villages.Pont Erambourg railway station is the starting point for a fun and unusual excursion: the Velorail de La Suisse Normande, a people powered train of open air carriages moved by cycling. You can travel almost to Clecy which has amazing countryside. There are plenty of small bistro cafes around, most offering good value local food. Dishes made from local produce, apples and cheese are fun to try.

“What a lovely cottage”

Reviewed 14 Feb 2014

What a lovely cosy cottage set in a beautiful French village! Excellent up-to-date facilities and fully equipped, with English TV. Easy parking and good outside facilities. Convenient one hour's drive from the ferry. Lots to do and see - so look forward to returning next year for more sightseeing. The hosts, Lyn and Peter, were extremely friendly and helpful in suggesting places to visit. Would highly recommend.
