Description

Nestling in a superb position above the Dronne valley, we found Les Vignasses as a redundant barn in 1989 and converted it to include 4 bedrooms (sleeps 8) and 2 bathrooms. It is ideal for both families and couples who want to enjoy the peace and quiet of the lovely Périgord Vert countryside and all the local holiday activities. The river Dronne is five kilometres away at Bourdeilles (where there is a wonderful château) and eight kilometres away at Brantôme (the "Venice of the Périgord").

We have a bit more than an acre of land, with a network of local footpaths and green lanes leading through the woods and starting from the house (no need to get in the car). The area is fantastic for cycling (we provide bikes) as long as you don't mind a few hills.

The first thing people most people notice when they arrive is the peace and quiet. The house faces south-west and looks out over a meadow and then woods. Depending on the season there are masses of wild flowers (literally hundreds

The first thing people most people notice when they arrive is the peace and quiet. The house faces south-west and looks out over a meadow and then woods. Depending on the season there are masses of wild flowers (literally hundreds of orchids in the spring), animals and butterflies. Lizards scamper up the outside walls and we have seen deer and red squirrels in the garden and wild boar in the woods. We have a bit more than an acre of land, which we keep under control with our neighbour's help. A public footpath runs beside our land and goes on through the woods to join the vast network of footpaths and lanes. Some of the local paths are organised into circular walks (details in the house). The local roads are very quiet and ideal for cycling (if you don't mind the hills).

Location description from owner

The Dordogne region

The Dordogne département, part of the Aquitaine region of south-west France, has been a favourite holiday destination for a very long time. It is a land of rivers, hills, forests, châteaux and caves where you can be as active or a lazy as you like.

Brantome

St Julien is in the Périgord Vert area of the Dordogne and sits surrounded by woods above the Dronne river valley. The Dronne itself is ideal for canoeing (there are some weirs to make it interesting) and swimming (there is an organised "beach" not far away. We are keen cyclists and the surrounding area is fantastic for cycling; the roads are quiet and interesting, albeit rather hilly. You soon learn that St Julien is at the top of a hill.

“An ideal place to have a wonderful holiday.”

Reviewed 8 Apr 2014

This property is truly an ideal holiday place for all, for families it is brilliant, lots of space for children to run around and play safely, for others it’s a wonderful place for peace and quiet. The whole place is equipped with everything you should need, and there is no worries if someone should break a cup, plate, etc., just replace it with any other. The areas near this property are truly picturesque, Brantome and Bourdeilles especially, hiring canoes in Brantome is fun or just to watch others, especially when they are tackling the weir. We have always overcome the language barrier with our limited words of French. We have spent many summer holidays here with our children and grandchildren and absolute love it. We would highly recommend this place.

“The most relaxing and peaceful holiday we've ever had.”

A lovely barn, homely furnished and well equipped situated in a peaceful village close to Brantome. We have stayed at the "Barn" three few times now and have booked to go again on June. Part of the barn houses the bikes, tandem and canoes (which we used on the river) and the cycling there is wonderful, lots of quiet lanes. Brantome is a super town with a fantastic market where you can buy local produce and fresh fish. The narrow streets and abbey has a lot to offer including an Aldi where we buy our wine. The location is very quiet with several acres of ground giving very peaceful surroundings -sitting outside with a drink in the evening watching the sun go down listening to the cicadas is a perfect end to the day. Definitely hooked now and we've always had good weather!

“Wonderfully peaceful setting”

This is a great place to get away from it all. A large, traditional, well equipped property with fabulous views of the surrounding countryside. We had some wonderful evenings eating out on the terrace, or playing boules,, (which are provided in the house!)

“Wonderfully relaxed area and barn is excellent value in lovely wooded area”

Reviewed 16 Jan 2014

The barn itself offers spacious accommodation with many facilities and all in a beautiful and peaceful area. You can eat out from expensively to relatively cheaply depending upon tastes and the beautiful old town of Brantome is within 8 miles and is known as the "Venice of France" with justification. The local town of Bourdeilles is only 3 to 4 mile away and offers a variety of eating places but relatively little in terms of self catering shopping. We go into Brantome most days and sample the cafes, shops and local atmosphere. Lunch is then an almost endless afternoon of French bread, cheese, pate, red wine followed by French bread .... ( you get the idea! ). We have stayed at the "barn" - beautifully converted - on several occasions and thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting a peaceful and relaxing holiday.
