"Le Tilleul" offers two charming and beautifully presented self catering gîtes : Le Figuier (sleeps 8) and La Vigne (sleeps 4)

“Le Figuier” is entered from the courtyard into the lounge with a tiled floor and exposed beams and stonework. The lounge is light and airy with ample seating for 8 adults. Cool in summer, it is equipped with a large fireplace holding a wood-burning stove for out of season use.

The kitchen/dining room is large and airy with windows and French doors opening up onto the terrace, providing views of the grounds and surrounding countryside. The kitchen is fully equipped with ample cupboards, worktops, cooker, oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge and freezer.

Upstairs there are 4 comfortable double bedrooms – 2 with king-size beds and 2 twin bed rooms; all with stone and timber features and having stripped oak flooring.

In addition, there are two good sized and recently renovated bathrooms, one with bath and one with shower.

There is a large private garden for games and a 12 x 6 meter swimming pool benefiting from all day sunshine !!

The Dordogne region

Dordogne is a department of the Aquitaine region in southwest France within which we find the famous Perigord. Aquitaine also encompasses Bordeaux and the wine country east of Bordeaux.

During the time of the Romans, the province of Aquitania extended almost as far north as the Loire river. Later on the title duke of Aquitaine was held by the counts of Poitiers form the 10th to the 12th century. The area became an English possession when Eleanor of Aquitaine, daughter of the last duke married the heir to the throne of England in 1152. It remained English until the 15th century when it was annexed by France at the end of the Hundred Year's War. The region of Aquitaine includes the departments of Pyrenees-Atlantiques, Landes, Gironde, Dordogne, and Lot-et-Garonne.

The Perigord region corresponds to the region close by the capitale city Perigueux of the department Dordogne. The Perigord, rich and fertile country, is densely forested and crisscrossed by rivers flowing from the plateau of the Massif Central out to the Atlantic. Of these, the Dordogne has carved out through the center a beautiful winding valley of gentle greenery. Many Stone Age relics and caves have been found here dating from around 20,000 years ago. In the village markets, the fruit and vegetables, nuts, and mushrooms of every description bear witness to the region's self-sufficiency in food.

The northern part of the Dordogne, stretching towards the Limousin to the north and Charente to the west, is named Perigord Vert (green Perigord) because of the greenery of the forests and meadows of the region.

This region, around Nontron, is a region of unspoiled scenery split by fast moving streams, rolling hills and great rocky plateaus.

Nontron, famous for its knives, is the largest town in the Perigord Vert (it is though just a small town).

The highlight of the Perigord Vert region is the beautiful town of Brantome and its abbey. Near to Brantome is the "most beautiful village" of St-Jean-de Cole and also the attractive village of Bourdeilles. Nearby Thiviers is known as the capital of Foie Gras, a delicious speciality of the region and not to be missed. Whilst Riberac is a thriving market town. Another favourite town is Excideuil and close to here the recently discovered Grotte de Tourtoirac, whilst the prehistoric Grottes de Villars are just a 5 minute drive away.

There are five chateaux and two abbeys to visit in the region: the Chateau de Jumilhac, the Chateau de Bourdeilles, the Chateau de Puyguilhem, the Chateau de Mareuil, and the Chateau de Hautefort, plus the Abbey at Brantome and the Abbey of Boschaud.

Just outside of the Dordogne department in the Charente department is the amazing village of Aubeterre sur Dronne which has a church hewn out of the rock and is counted amongst the "most beautiful villages" in France.
