Description from owner
La Maison d'Amis is a comfortable and private cottage on an estate which is one of the most tranquil in the Dordogne, offering walks in the woods on the estate, fishing and swimming in the pool. Stabling for horses. It is a perfect base for exploring the many attractions of the area, and within easy reach of the many good restaurants and shops in Brantome, Nontron and Perigueux. The Domaine in its present form has been here since at least 1711. It was most probably the “Ferme Domaniale” (The Manor Farm) to Chateau Gaillard, which used to stand up on the hill. The Chateau itself was reputedly a Crusader Castle, later owned by the Knights Templar, and legend has it that there are many Crusader and Knights Graves up on the hill. La Maison d'Amis was originally the “Chai”- wine press from when the area was a large wine producing area until the vines were wiped out by disease in the late 19th Century. The lake reputedly dates back to Roman Times, and is fully lined in stone.Le Domaine is run

ACQUITAINE is a fascinating region and the Dordogne perhaps the most interesting part of it.Both the Dordogne itself as well as the Bordeaux region are home to many fine wine making chateaux, which can be visited and wines sampled! The area is full of historic sites and buildings to visit - perhaps the most famous is the caves at Lascaux. There are also fascinating caves at Villars, only 10km from La Maison d'Amis. Most of the important chateaux can be visited. In the summer especially there are numerous concerts and similar events. Perigueux has a world renowned festival of mime each year. The Dordogne is famed for good eating with a large chouce of restaurants within easy driving distance. Specialities include foie gras and duck, mushrooms ( cepes ) and traditional local recipes.

It has all the practical features like supermarkets, banks, tourist office, post office but is also simply a wonderfully beautiful town to potter about. “Great holiday, beautiful location in terrific Gite”
Our family really enjoyed our stay at La Maison d'Amis near Brantome. The Gite was very welcoming, well equipped and nicely furnished with generously sized rooms all in a beautiful setting in the grounds of a beautiful manor house. The pool was great, the gardens are enormous and the BBQ was well used! Even the lake and rowing boat was a welcome addition. The nearby towns of Brantome, Bourdilles and St Jean de Cole are just lovely.
This year we stayed in this cottage for the second time. We used to live nearby this place for 20 years and we knew the owners as friends. We saw the stables transferring in this "Maison des Amis" and when we had to sell our house in the Dordogne in May 2012 we immediately booked for August 2012 for 3 weeks. Since we have lots of friends in the surrounding we came back this year in July and we will surely come back next year. Since this house is large, comfortable and has a lovely garden to sit in the sun and under the big chestnut-tree, it has no need to look for another place. There is wi-fi, a beautiful heated swimming pool , which can be covered, and a super lake on the property.
“Charming House, beautiful location. Very comfortable.”
We stayed here for two weeks, myself, husband and daughter of ten. We were warmly welcomed on arrival late at night. The owners were very helpful and friendly and ensured that we had everything that we needed for a comfortable stay. The photographs do not really reflect the charm of this house, especially its location. The house is part of an old farmhouse associated with a nearby chateau, now ruined. The grounds are extensive with beautiful trees, a lake, lovely paths for walking and plenty interesting wildlife. The interior is very cool in warm weather. There is a comfortable living/dining room with television, sky box and DVD player. WiFi is not provided, however, we were able to connect from the main house, however, the signal was poor. The upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious, freshly decorated and very clean and comfortable. The swimming pool has a lovely patio with deck chairs which is not reflected in the photographs. The pool is also covered which means that it is comstantly warm, the owners removed part of the cover when it got very hot and this was very refreshing to swim in. There is a lovely grassy area with beautiful trees outside the house, the owners provided garden furniture and we spent a lot of time sitting there relaxing under a huge chestnut tree. The beautiful town of Brantomme is about a twenty minute drive on a very pretty and scenic road, there are other small towns which are closer with all amenities available. The only criticism I have of this house is the kitchen which is very small with only one surface area for food preparation, having said that it is sufficient for preparing simple holiday meals. Otherwise, the kitchen has everything you might need including large fridge freezer and dishwasher, plenty of crockery and cooking utensils. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this charming holiday house and especially enjoyed the beautiful and tranquil location.
