The Calabria region
Southern Italy is amazingly diverse in character. It is considered to be the poorer part of Italy. However, what is lacks in commercialism, it more than makes up for in natural beauty, genuine and friendly locals and excellent food and wine.
SILA NATIONAL PARK
Sila is a National Park which is a very nice place to spend one or more days completely immersed in the nature and take a break from the hot summer days that Calabria enjoys. The Park includes forests with a wide range of vegetable and animal species, artificial lakes, valleys, signed routes to do trekking, hotels, cheap places to eat traditional local food and an adventure park with acrobatic trails among the trees! However, you will need you need your own vehicle to get there. This park is approximately 1 ½ hour drive from Galati.
ASPRMONTE NATIONAL PARK
Montalto, 1956 mt above sea level is the highest point of the Massif Aspromontano, where clear days you can see from the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Strait of Messina, and the Ionian Sea, with a landscape of forests and vast valleys which open in a radial pattern from the plain of Gioia Tauro, Locris.
The waterfalls of Maisano are one of the preferred destinations for lovers of Aspromonte tracking paths. With a path between the simplest to go with about an hour of walking, are located in the heart of the Aspromonte National Park, approximately 1200 meters of altitude.
Aspromonte Forgiarelle Waterfalls.
Forgiarelle waterfalls – unlike those who believe that the Aspromonte is just a barren and desert territory, in reality it is a mountain covered largely by forests trees (beeches, firs and larches) rich of creeks and waterfalls; some little known or unknown altogether other more famous and very popular.
In addition to the natural beauty of the Sila and Aspromonte, there are many historical sites in Calabria, too numerous to mention here.
On the Ionian coast, about 60 Km from Reggio Calabria and at 30 Km from Locri, extends, for a stretch of over 10 Miles (da Capo Spartivento in Marinella di Bruzzano), located in the town of Brancaleone, one of the most beautiful and lively seaside resorts of the coast, which until a few decades ago it was better known as the ' city of jasmines ". Now the whole coastline is called the Jasmine coast.
In Galati, where the townhouse is situated, the Greeks made it a landing for boats. Later on, they were obliged to give the territory to the Romans, who enlarged the paths, created the first roads and built the first fortified cities. The recent history was born with the progressive abandonment of the inland. The first houses were built at the country in a fascinating disorder of poor houses, along the highways that nowadays links and crosses the city centers of ionion coast. The village is very small, leans over the beach and is on the SS106 route from Reggio Calabria. Few houses joined one by one, a tangle of walls, windows, distinguished among them just by the color, a church, a lighthouse and... sea, sea far as the eye can see. Knowing the beaches in Galati is not easy; the Ionion sea, year by year changes their morphology, making the coast a paradise changing.
It is at Brancaleone, that in 1927 were imported the first plants of jasmine which was then, within a few decades, grown on vast quantities within this municipal territory and later spread into the nearby Bruzzano Zeffirio and in other towns of the surrounding area, namely from Palizzi until Siderno. Jasmine plantations consisting of long rows (about 100 metres) located in parallel, from which daily were collected tonnes of fragrant flowers, along with the cultivation of bergamots and other citrus fruit, for a long time characterized the town of Brancaleone and represented an important economic resource not only for locals but also for thousands of people from other neighbouring countries who went to collect them every day from local markets. Still existing are the distilleries that are needed for working with jasmine and bergamot, whose essence was exported abroad and used in perfumery, in pharmacy, in culinary and dolceria.
Another no less important feature is the incredibly clear blue sea, bordered by a beautiful beach with fine golden sand. The whole thing is made even more precious by a truly exceptional climate, which each year attracts thousands of tourists from all over Italy and abroad. It is still relatively unspoilt and unkown. However,Brancaleone is very lively and is equipped with modern meeting places, hotels, sports centres, resorts and clubs. There are also numerous other tourist attractions of historical, artistic and archaeological as well as several possibilities of excursions at the evocative hills of Sperlongara Tower, guard, Capistrello, Pressocito and Higher, where Brancaleone you can enjoy the sight of a fantastic panorama. In particular, are of historical and artistic interest the visits to the old village of Brancaleone, where lie the remains of the prison, by some ancient churches, the convent and the turret; other important routes are the Tower of Galati, the pace of the French and Manchester, as well as the nearby towns (although outside the municipal area) of Tridetti and Armenia.
Brancaleone marina is also known as " turtle town", where, in addition to offices, schools, public transport and the numerous tourist complexes, is one of the longest and most beautiful "way marine" on the coast.
Just overlooking the via Marina in Brancaleone is located the House where the writer Cesare Pavese stayed and found inspiration for some literary works during his confinement at Brancaleone, between 1935 and 1936.
