Description

Swallow Barn has a glorious open-plan living/sitting area with comfy sofas and chairs and lots of exposed beams. There are extensive views across the gardens with bird feeders right outside. The kitchen is also found at this level and has a dishwasher and washing machine. There is a flat-screen TV, DVD, CD player, games and books. As this cottage is ‘upside-down’ the two bedrooms (a double and a twin) and bathroom are downstairs. The bathroom has a bath with an electric shower. There is direct access to the south-facing gardens with lots of garden furniture, a BBQ and the tennis court. In the front is a flower-filled courtyard and parking right outside. 200 metres away is our own mini nature reserve, our 6 acre meadow and 2 lakes, one for fishing. Bradworthy’s friendly pub, tea rooms and shops are ½ a mile away.

Children and pets are welcome. Great holidays for families or couples who love the great outdoors!

All bed linens are supplied and towels for guests from abroad. There are no extra charges for dogs, fishing, or any of the other facilities available on site. Guests tell us we have thought of everything. The most important thing to us is that you have a great holiday!

Further details indoors

Swallow Barn is part of Lake House Cottages and B&B, one of the oldest buildings in the village of Bradworthy. In previous years it has been a pub and also one of the main farmhouses in the area. It is surrounded by rolling Devon countryside with flower-filled hedgerows. The village is small and friendly and guests are made very welcome at the local inn.
All four of our cottages have lots of information in them regarding the area and what is available. We have included lots of walk suggestions and maps too, plus games and books. Places to visit nearby include Exmoor and Dartmoor, Clovelly, Padstow, Tintagel, Port Isaac, Boscastle, Bude and Okehampton. There are castles and historic houses too, plus many gardens, some of national importance such as RHS Rosemoor. We specialise in walking holidays and can assist with transport to and from the coast path if required.

Further details outdoors

Lots of furniture available for guests outside to enjoy the south-facing gardens. There is also a BBQ for guest use and all the cottages have their own tennis racquets for the (hard) tennis court. In the nearby meadow there is a log cabin with tea and coffee making facilities. There is another BBQ here and lots more picnic tables, benches and deck chairs. It is an idyllic spot which is utterly peaceful. Fishing is available free of charge to guests in the lower lake.

The England region

Lake House Cottages and B&B are in North Devon, but lie just 3 miles from the Cornwall border. The whole of the North Devon/West Cornwall coast is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as well as a World Biosphere Reserve. The coastline is spectacular with high cliffs and blankets of wild flowers. There are rocky coves and long sandy beaches - great for surfing - as well as little fishing harbours and seaside towns to explore. There is one of the largest sand dune systems in Europe at Braunton and Northam Burrows. The South West Coast path is easily accessible and around 80 miles of it can be reached whilst holidaying with us. Inland the scenery is green and verdant with farm fields and flower-filled hedgerows around small hamlets and villages with ancient churches and friendly village inns. At night the sky is filled with stars as the area has almost no light pollution (there is even an observatory in the village). For a truly peaceful, rural retreat you cannot beat it.

For families there are lots of outdoor activities such as wind surfing, kayaking, archery, zorbing, swimming and cycling on the Tarka Trail, all close by. There are also three quality adventure/animal parks: the Milky Way, the Big Sheep and Atlantis, all within 12 miles. And there is always our 6 acre meadow in which to let off steam!

Bradworthy

Bradworthy's carnival takes place on Bank Holiday Monday at the end of August. There is an arts festival in the Barnstaple area in June and St Peters Fair in Holsworthy in July. Live music can be seen in various local pubs including the Bradworthy Inn once a month or so.

The Tamar Lakes are 3 miles away. The upper lake has many water sports available as well as a cycle/walking path right around it. Lower Tamar Lake is a nature reserve with pleasant walks and a bird hide.
The Eden Project with its huge glass biomes can be reached in just over an hour. Other nearer gardens include RHS Rosemoor, Docton Mill and Marwood Hill. There are two National Trust properties within easy reach, Arlington Court and Lanhydrock. Exmoor, Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor can all be reached within a 1 hour drive and are great for exploring for adults and children alike. Tintagel Castle and Okehampton Castle are also great places to visit. Okehampton Castle lies close to another off-road cycle path, the Granite Trail.

“We loved it”

Reviewed 2 Oct 2016

What a lovely place. We arrived very late and was not sure about the directions. Simon was a star. He guided us and waited up to greet us. This was so nice. The place is lovely. Plenty of space and with an amazing back garden. Our dog had a ball. He had a companion in Scarlett. The surroundings are lovely and Simon and Sarah are always there to give tips on what to do and where to go. Also, they have provided a very useful binder with all the information you need to have for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Must go place - is the Hidden Lakes. Perfect for a picnic and wild life watching.

“Swallow Barn is a excellent place to stay”

Reviewed 18 Jun 2012

Our stays at Swallow Barn Cottage have fulfilled all our expectations of a holiday cottage. It is light and spacious and well appointed. It has everything one would require for a self catering holiday. The information leaflets supplied are a great help when planning our daily outings. Our dogs enjoy the large garden and we enjoy the company of other guests and of course our hosts Lesley and Peter. We have yet to make use of the fishing lakes which Pete and Lesley acquired last year. It is a good place to exercise our dogs as well!
