The England region

Southbourne lies east of Boscombe and Bournemouth. Boscombe is currently shaking off its tired Victorian facade for modern sea view apartments, rejuvenated gardens and a wholly refurbished seafront and pier. Boscombe is a great shopping centre with indoor shopping at its Victorian arcade, regular street markets and antique alley. Boscombe is set to become Bournemouth’s surfing capital. The new artificial surf reef is set to make surfing even more enjoyable on the Dorset coast and the associated development of surf outlets, cafes and facilities will make it one of the best in the country Dorset is a county of great beauty, a land of contrast and breath-taking scenery. It is one of the maritime counties of southern England, fronting the English Channel which separates the United Kingdom from mainland Europe. Its coastline extends some 140 kilometres from Lyme Regis in the west to Christchurch in the east, and offers a selection of the finest sandy beaches to be found in the British Isles. The award winning heritage coast begins in Poole Harbour and includes the Purbeck coastline which is the site of special nature reserves and countryside/marine parks. Travelling westwards, equally spectacular is the Chesil Bank, a barren pebbled beach, stretching 25 kilometres from Weymouth to Bridport. This, with the internationally famous Abbotsbury Swannery, is a photographer’s paradise, and a sea captain’s nightmare! The region owes much of its charm to its villages - over 150 of them - and they are well worth exploring. Drive through Abbotsbury’s long and winding main street and you will see sandstone cottages, tempting tea rooms and glimpse an old coaching inn. Other villages have quaint names like Toller Porcorum, Plush & Piddlehinton, each has its history, character and charm. Many - like Evershot, Nettlecombe or Cerne Abbas - lie hidden in quiet inland valleys. In Cerne Abbas, for instance, you’ll find houses dating from the 15th century, the ruins of an Abbey and the famous Giant - a striking 180-foot high figure cut into the chalk downs overlooking the village. Dorset features some excellent museums, with world leading centres at Bovington (The Tank Museum, telling the history of military vehicles), and the Russell Cotes Museum and Art Gallery in Bournemouth.

Other museums include the Dorset County Museum in Dorchester, The Red House in Christchurch, the Royal Signals Museum at Blandford, and the award winning Brewers Quay in Weymouth. Many smaller towns have their own local museums. Dorset has many country houses and other historic sites to visit. Kingston Lacy near Wimborne is run by the National Trust, as is both Hardy’s Cottage (the birthplace of the author) and Max Gate (the author’s later home) near Dorchester.

Bournemouth

Southbourne is a popular holiday resort and is a suburb of Bournemouth. Situated between Boscombe and Christchurch, it offers a pleasant beach and a host of nearby visitor attractions. Southbourne Beach: Southbourne is one of Bournemouth’s quieter beaches, popular with bathers due to the fact it has no sudden shelves or rip currents. This sandy beach has good access facilities and a Kids Zone scheme to ensure parents find lost children quickly. The beach’s most popular feature is its seafront restaurant bistro which is open all year round.

“Everything was as promised!”

Reviewed 10 Sep 2012

We spent 2 weeks at the apartment at The Broadwalk, and have only positive feedback to give over! The apartment was absolutely immaculate when we arrived! They had even provided brand new bedding for the sofa bed in the main room!! The 2 double beds were so comfortable, that we were actually amazed, because the previous review had suggested the exact opposite, for some unexplainable reason . . so we were actually rather anxious about that, and very satisfied with what was the reality!! It was clean and bright, and when we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Catherine from the agency, who showed us all we needed to know and took us around the apartment! It is actually on the small side, but we would definitely recommend it for a family of four, with ample space; we were 5 of us, so it was that bit less roomy! All in all, no complaints whatsoever, and warmest thanks go to Holiday lettings for all their help from the very start!! A lovely compact holiday apartment! Highly recommended!

“Big on appearance, small on the details”

Reviewed 30 Jun 2012

The apartment was finished tastefully, modern and fresh on appearance but the cleanliness was very questionable. My mother mopped the kitchen and living room space before we felt comfortable enough to settle down. My biggest gripe was the lack of quality where it mattered. After an early start and driving three hours, we were looking forward to retiring. 1) the two double beds were extremely uncomfortable, where the springs of the mattress were felt throughout. It would have made a bit of difference if the mattresses were covered with a mattress pad. With the poor quality linen, too boot, the level of hygiene between used mattresses and our skin, was also a concern: glad we took along own bed linen! 2) The towels were also poor quality. Again, glad we walked with our own.

Owner's reply: The property was checked before the arrival and it was in immaculate order. We note that they cleaned at the end of the visit and the cleaning company would have cleaned after the visit.
