“The perfect getaway”

Reviewed 2 Jan 2016

I booked this cottage for a 2 night stay in the October half-term as a birthday surprise for my partner. Although some of the roads are not for the faint-hearted (especially in a Ford KA!), we were amazed when we arrived. Keys were easy to find, as well as the cottage which was lit up and heated ready for our arrival. We quickly made a cup of tea and browsed through the 'welcome guide' which had lots of helpful information for two newbies in the Lakes. This cottage was booked purely on the images posted...I didn't even think that a waterfall would be right outside the bedroom window - but it was and it looked even more beautiful in real life. We enjoyed lots of walks and even though it rained on one day, the typical English weather did not get in the way of the walks and also gave us an excuse to try the local pub a few times! To sum up, I would recommend this cottage to anyone who needs a peaceful, quiet setting but still wants an adventure. It exceeded expectations and I would love to book again in my next half term. Special thanks also to the owner Greg who was very quick to respond to emails and offer travel advice prior to my stay.

“We couldn't have been happier with this cottage!”

Reviewed 25 Aug 2015

We rented the Whillan Beck cottage for our honeymoon in the Lake District and couldn't have been happier with the cottage. It is located in a small but quaint town tucked between two mountain crags. Although the area is fairly remote, the proprietors included directions to a grocery store as part of their directions to the cottage so we arrived well stocked (the town also had a small market, post office, and pub). The cottage itself was super charming, impeccably clean and well and thoughtfully stocked. It even had wifi! We would highly recommend getting the "breakfast basket" as part of your stay (this was an extra offered at the time of rental), we were so impressed with the selection of meats, breads, and more that were waiting for us when we arrived---worth every penny! After exploring the more touristy destinations in the area, we were even happier with our cottage's quieter location as it allowed us to explore more of the amazing landscape and avoid the bustle and crowds we saw in some of the more trafficked towns. We already want to return to this cottage!

“Beautiful cottage, amazing views and great location!”

I stayed in this cottage for a weekend - I just wish it could have been longer!! The cottage is gorgeous with everything you need. It is very cosy, warm and clean. Boot is a lovely village and a great place to get away from everything! There is loads to do nearby and the views are spectacular. We also visited the two pubs nearby which were very welcoming with a great atmosphere. I loved the whole experience and will certainly be recommending this cottage to others! Look forward to returning again sometime in the future! Thanks to all the staff.

“Idyllic cottage & location, we will certainly book again next year!”

Reviewed 16 Nov 2013

We visited the cottages for the first time at the end of October/beginning of November for a short stay and can't wait to go again. We arrived late one evening and the cosy cottage was already warm and welcoming. Despite already having lots of plans for things to do in the area we immediately felt like we wouldn't want to leave the cottage! It was everything we'd hoped for, there were stunning views from our bedroom window and sky windows and the Cumbria outdoors was basically on our door-step. We personally began each morning with a lovely cooked breakfast including local sausages & bacon from our hamper (we were on holiday after all) and ate out in the evenings at two conveniently located pubs that both offered delicious food. The property itself had everything we needed, a well equipped kitchen, cosy lounge, clean bathroom (the cottage was clean throughout), character features, and Sky TV. There is also a stunning garden with amazing views of the hills - I can imagine we would have spent a lot of time here had we visited at a warmer time of the year. We loved our stay at Whillan Beck Cottage and can't wait to return next year.

“Cracking breakaway place.”

Reviewed 22 May 2012

This place was dynamite. We went there for one of our two honeymoons straight from our wedding and it was all we wanted. The cottage was superb and as was the host. And the area fantastic. Spectacular views, the Beck itself is roaring beauty, the country pubs (The Woolpack, King George IV and Brook Inn) are legendary; great food and quality ales. We trekked around How's Wood and Wast Water and drove the narrow roads (like you're in a rally without the speeds of course!). What more could you want for a top breakaway from the big bad city? Brilliantly run and can't say enough.

“Pint-sized perfection!”

This is a fabulous little cottage right next to Whillan Beck (as the name implies!). It's probably the smallest out of the Bridge End Farm group of cottages, so may not be suitable for very tall people. There's a gorgeous view from the bedroom of the bridge over the beck towards Boot Mill, and there are shared gardens behind the property that lead down to the beck. The gardens are very spacious, so you never feel your space is being invaded! The cottage itself is immaculately presented - clean, comfortable, warm, well-equipped. It offers superb walking and cycling from the doorstep, and there are two pubs within walking distance who serve great meals. This is very highly recommended for couples who want to get away from it all and soak up the scenery - the location and views are amazing.

“Great Location”

Reviewed 5 Aug 2011

We stayed at Whillan Beck cottage for the last week in July 2011. We’re really fussy about the cleanliness of holiday accommodation, so were really pleased with the excellent standard we found at Whillan Beck, it was very clean and well maintained. The cottage is small but well laid out and ideal for two people. It’s located towards the end of a no through road so there is no noise from passing traffic. There are occasional visitors on foot to the small watermill at the other side of the bridge and walkers heading towards Wasdale which is some five miles away over Eskdale moor. If you’ve had a long day on the fells and don’t fancy preparing dinner, there are two pubs within five minutes walk of the cottage that do meals. If the sun is shining there’s and enclosed lawned area to the rear of the cottage with seating, add a good book, the sound of the near by beck and a glass of wine perhaps and it makes for a pleasant relaxing afternoon/evening. On our next visit to the Eskdale area we will definitely be looking to stay here again.

“Fantastic cosy, comfortable cottage in idyllic location - can't wait to go back!”

Reviewed 14 Jul 2011

From the moment we enquired to book with Select Cottages we received excellent personable customer service - quick to respond, efficient and friendly. A great deal of thought has gone into making the cottage comfortable and a wonderful place to relax in after a day on the fells or a stroll by the beck/waterfall. We were made to feel very welcome and it is truly a home away from home. Peace and solitude coupled with internet and Sky TV for checking in with the real world! For us, the accommodation and location would take some beating. Roll on October when we will be back again.

“Cosy cottage in a brilliant location”

Reviewed 13 Jul 2011

We stayed at Whillan Beck between Christmas 2010 and New Year (we had stayed at Bridge End Farmhouse next door some years ago so knew it would be good). We had a great time. The cottage is small but perfectly formed for two people and was cosy and welcoming despite the subzero temperatures outside! It had everything we needed, was well looked after and clean. There is also a laundry room in a nearby outbuilding which is handy after those mountain walks. The views up onto the fells are lovely and you can also hear the sound of the small Beck running which is relaxing. Boot itself is a tiny hamlet but is well served by 2/3 pubs within easy walking distance. The location is ideal for those wishing to explore the outdoors and there is excellent walking straight out from the cottage and onto the Fells and over to Wastwater, up Hardknott pass to Hardknott fort or to Eskdale Green. We will definitely go back again.
