Description

Glencoldon Cottage is in the village of Boat of Garten, 6 miles from Aviemore, in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. The cottage has a Green Tourism Gold Award.

The village is on the River Spey between Aviemore and Grantown-on-Spey, and is ideally located for easy access to the huge range of attractions and outdoor activities that the area is renowned for. Grantown-on-Spey also marks the start of the world famous Whisky Trail.

The cottage itself has recently been fully renovated and upgraded to high modern standards (completed Sept 2017). It is ideal for 4-6 people, with heat, power and log usage all included in the rental. Amongst the full range of facilities, there is also a bike shelter with secure locking facility, a new wood burning stove, and a spacious balcony deck area with views to the Cairngorms and surrounding wildlife.

The large fenced, child-safe, "wild" garden is bounded by accessible woodland to the rear and the 65-mile Speyside Way to the front (running parallel to the famous Strathspey Steam Railway – you can see this running past several times a day!). The garden is partly an extension of the surrounding environment, with red squirrels in recent residence, and partly an area where you can enjoy a barbeque, or a game of volleyball, badminton or mini-football on the small lawn.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT Boat of Garten is located in one of the areas of the Cairngorm National Park most easily accessible by public transport, with nearby connections for bus, rail and air travel. Whilst a car is not essential, there may be certain activities / locations not accessible by the following links By Rail – Nearest mainline station: Aviemore (on London - Edinburgh - Inverness mainline) By Steam Train - Station in Boat of Garten. Shuttles to Aviemore By Bus - Service 34 goes to Aviemore, Grantown on Spey, Carrbridge and Inverness. By Bicycle - too many off-road cycle routes to mention, including in the National Park and on Speyside Way. Many village-to-village tracks. National Cycle Route 7 passes through the village.

The thing I love most when arriving at the cottage is the instant peace! As this is one of the reasons many guests visit the Cairngorms too, we decided we would not divert you from starting to unwind with a big welcome party, but would ensure you have all you need to quickly make yourselves at home. I have been lucky enough to spend time at the cottage for 50+ years! So, having enjoyed all the local highlights ourselves, and with our own children too, we are more than happy to share our knowledge. We realise many people come with their own adventure already planned, but, for others, we provide maps and information on local favourites; and leave you many ways to get in touch if you want some guidance or to discuss any plans in detail.

“Weekend away”

Had a lovely short break at the start of December with my family. The accommodation had beautiful views, was clean, spacious and well equipped (I was also relieved to find a small stash of child friendly cups and crockery at the back of one of the kitchen drawers). The wood burning stove came with supplies and instructions (and a safety guard) creating a cosy atmosphere in the evening, and when my littlest children went to bed there were boards games available and a smart TV with Amazon to keep everyone else occupied. Both the cottage and garden were child friendly and my four kids had a great time playing outside. There is also a forest walk with the entrance through the gate at the back of the garden providing an easy way to access the walk (kids will need supervised). The owner was very helpful with good communication, and had prepared a manual for the cottage which provided lots of information which we found very useful. There is lots to do in the local area, we mostly did Christmas activities (Cairngorm reindeers, panto and santa express) but we will definitely return in the future over the summer holidays and would happily book another stay at Glencoldon cottage.

Thanks Derek we had a superb stay. The lodge is absolutely lovely everything was catered for brilliant beds, cosy log burner and beautiful views and right by the steam railway. Recommend anyone to stay here it's round the corner from Aviemore and the best drive up to the cairngorm ski resort (20mins). We'll come back and stay again.

“Lovely accommodation, great location”

Lovely short break over New Year for our family. Home from home in this lovely, spacious,well-equipped cottage. Lovely location with nearby riverside and forest walks. Local town is well served by great local shops and friendly welcoming pub. The cottage was very comfortable with lovely views of the mountains - snow capped for our visit. We celebrated new year on the balcony watching fireworks going off! Our children loved it too, including the games which had been provided. They also enjoyed seeing Speyside Railway Steam Train too. Would highly recommend and we very much hope to return.
