Description

Boat of Garten is one of the best loved villages nestled amongst heather clad hills and native woodland in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. This Quirky self catering cottage is the largest known house using 'sleeper' foundations in Boat of Garten. It's a perfect place to stay and explore the Cairngorm National Park & beyond. Local shops, cafe's, restaurants & the Strathspey Steam Railway in the village are roughly a 10 minute walk from Balblair Cottage.

This well presented cottage offers deceptively spacious accommodation with master bedroom on ground floor, 1 WC & Shower room plus 2nd WC (both on ground floor), kitchen & separate dining room, lounge with open fire & conservatory. Upstairs there are 2 twin & 1 single bedroom. The stairs are steep & the height in the twin bedrooms is restricted due to the traditional cottage coombed ceilings. There is a carport & off road parking for 2 vehicles. Large enclosed south

Location description from owner

The Aviemore and the Cairngorms region

The Cairngorm National Park (Pàirc Nàiseanta a' Mhonaidh Ruaidh) was established in 2003 and within it is 4,500 sq km of unspoilt wilderness, mountains, castles, ancient Caledonian forests, lochs, rivers, heather clad moorland and stunning scenery. The park has the largest range of mountains within the UK and 5 of the 6 highest Munros (mountains over 914m) are to be found here, 55 summits over 900m of which a further 43 are also Munros. It is also home to the UK's highest funicular railway at Cairngorm Mountain and the Strathspey Steam Railway which runs between Aviemore via Boat of Garten to Broomhill.

The park is home to an abundance of wildlife species, 25% of which are threatened in the UK. The wide variety of animals include: Golden Eagles, Osprey, Capercailli, Pine Martens, Badgers, Red Squirrles, Red Deer and Wildcats.

The River Spey & River Dee is renowned worldwide for Salmon fishing and the River South Esk and River Don are just within the boundaries of the Cairngorm National Park where the rare fresh water pearl mussel is found. Rivers and Lochs within the park are also a great location for water sports such as windsurfing, sailing or kayaking.

Boat of Garten

Within the Cairngorms National park you are able to visit several of the world's famous whisky distilleries and take a tour to see how whisky is produced and maybe take home a bottle or two. The Strathspey and Malt Whisky trails are within the park both incorporating 6/7 working distilleries and the Speyside Cooperage. Visit their websites for further information and their whisky festivals in May & September to join special nosings, ceilidhs & other festivities.

'Thunder in the Glen' is an annual event that takes place in Aviemore where Harley-Davidson fans & people from all over the world come to enjoy this fantastic 2 day event. It takes place around the end of August each year and has a great reputation amongst both Harley fans and visitors to the area.

Other annual events include: Aviemore Walking Festival, the Husky Rally, Insider Music Festival or Aviemore half marathon to name but a few. There are many smaller local events happening throughout the year including exhibitions, music and sports events.
Activities in the park include: skiing, boarding, mountain biking, clay pigeon shooting, 4 x 4 off road driving, mountaineering & outdoor adventure courses, white water rafting, rock climbing, abseiling, golfing, fishing, ski mountaineering or cross country skiing.

Family days out include: Strathspey Steam Railway, RSPB Reserve, Treezone, Landmark, Sleddog or Reindeer Centre, Deeside or Speyside Activity Park. There are numerous Historic Buildings, Galleries, Castle tours and gift shops within the area. “This is a charming cottage”

Reviewed 7 Aug 2016

We loved this charming cottage. It is characterful, with all the amenities we needed and comfortably laid out for a relaxed family holiday. It is well located in the village. The garden was perfect for our two year old grandson and the dog to run around in. The big bed downstairs was huge and very comfortable, the kitchen was well equipped and the sitting room, dining room and sun lounge gave the family plenty space to spread out and relax. The stairs to the other bedrooms are a very short, steep climb and the rooms are small and tucked in under the eaves, which may not suit everyone, but we liked this, it was quirky and fun. You can hear the steam train whistle while you sit at the bedroom window or when you are in the garden with your cup of tea. A lovely Railway Children kind of holiday.

Thank you for your kind and honest review of Balblair Cottage. We are delighted that you all had a wonderful time staying at Balblair Cottage. It is wonderful to hear the steam train whistle whilst sitting in the garden. We hope that you are able to return and stay at our "Quirky" Cottage another time. Thank you. Fiona
