Location description from owner

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

The Haute Vienne is Departement 87, one of three departments that make up the Limousin. The Limousin is probably the most unspoilt area in France, being the second least populated area in France after Corsica. It has vast areas of open countryside, an abundance of villages and small farming hamlets, swathes of forest and woodland with majestic oak trees and sweet chestnut trees lining the route. A very green and natural region, dotted with lakes, traversed by the River Vienne. Limoges is the capital of the Limousin, a small attractive city famous mainly for its porcelain, well worth the visit. We experience true defined seasons here, short sharp winters, fresh bright springs, sunny hot summers and gloriously colourful warm autumns. There is something here for everyone to do, young old or otherwise, perfect for young families too. Whether you want museums, theatre or attractions, or simply picnics by the lake, long walks, come along and discover this region. The Limousin is primarily a rural region, famous for its beef one of the best in the world, the herds of terracotta coloured cattle roaming 'free range' in the large lush fields. The region is also a major timber producer. Truly a haven for wildlife, you may be lucky to see some wonderful species on your visit.

Blond

Blond, Haute Vienne, is a small village, 'capital' of the Monts De Blond. Friendly and welcoming, with a boulangerie/epicerie, French bar/restaurant, Italian restaurant, organic green grocer, craft shop selling hand made hand spun woollen items, a brocante, post office and hairdressers. Twice a year markets are held, the second sunday in August is the 'Foire aux melons et ail' that is the melon and garlic fair, the second sunday in December is the 'Foire aux chapons' the capon fair. Many walks and rambles are signposted from the village centre. The well visited fortified church is prominent on the Place de L'église, listed with Batiments de France. The areas surrounding Blond are strewn with dolmens, standing stones and megaliths, random and fascinating. In springtime bluebells flower on the Mont, followed by Lily of the Valley in May, and foxgloves in June. Along the verges one can also spot wild orchids and cowslips. During the month of March the cranes are flying North, returning South late autumn, a wonderful sight to witness. In late March the swallows, swifts and housemartins arrive, staying until October time. Another regular sight in quiet corners, is the red squirrel, often seen leaping from tree to tree. A summer visitor is the Hoopoe, an unusual bird! The area is full of deer and many wild boar. Loved by nature lovers, walkers, cyclists, horseriders, fishermen, birdspotters, golfers, fresh air seekers, sightseers, visit our area as quickly as possible!

“the peaceful haven Chez Marie”

Reviewed 4 May 2015

Booking was a very easy pleasant experience and the landlord very helpful. Everything was as brochure described. Situated in a nice quite village with easy access to all major towns. Used own transport so cannot comment on public transport access. In a beautiful rural area of France there is plenty to see. The gite Chez Marie is very well appointed warm and very comfortable with everything you need. I particularly liked the rear courtyard which for me is well secluded. Really enjoyed my stay and look forward to going back there later this year. Have recommended to friends and family.

Owner's reply: Thank you for taking the time to review Chez Marie. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay....I agree with you regarding the private courtyard, a very pleasant place to be :) I'm pleased that you intend returning, you will be very well received.

“Beautiful, comfortable gite in tranquil surroundings”

Reviewed 26 Apr 2015

The gite was beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean with everything we required for our holiday. Very comfortable and the owners couldn't have been more helpful. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and incredibly quiet. We enjoyed going for walks and seeing the wildlife. The area itself is very interesting and full of lovely places to visit. We enjoyed day trips to many local villages and an excursion to Limoges. A very restful and peaceful place to stay.

Owner's reply: Thank you for reviewing your stay at Chez Marie gîte rural. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and that you found the gîte clean and pleasant to holiday in. I'm also very happy that you were able to enjoy the surroundings and the local area. You will be very welcome to return.
