Description from owner

July & August availability NOW!

There is only one Gypsy Rose.

*** Used as a "location" for films, TV, photography, Gypsy Rose stands alone in our ancient apple orchard, overlooking a brook and waterfall. ***

This is not part of a holiday complex - you have a wagon, a pile of wood, a waterfall and a wash-shed in our orchard; very much a "what you make it" break, if you love nature, peace, quiet and comfy camping this is the place!

Gypsy Rose is an authentic bow-top Gypsy Vardo (wagon/caravan) beautifully painted, decorated and dressed in traditional Romany gypsy style.

She's been "on the road" as a horse-drawn living wagon and has come to rest in her own private bower in our ancient apple orchard, by a mistletoe-laden tree and overlooking her own garden and waterfall.

You'll have a real gypsy-wagon experience in this beautiful place; there is no electricity - lighting from solar lamps, candles and lanterns, heat from a Queenie woodburning stove in the van, cooking on an open wood fire pit with pans suspended from a tripod.

Mains water comes from a nearby tap in the orchard, and you'll be heating your own hot water for washing in a kettle over the fire.

Inside the wagon there's a small pull-out double bed with memory foam mattress and space beneath for a single bed too. NB Guests of a more generous proportion may find the accommodation "cosy", please be aware.

You have your own washroom with a mains-connected flushing lavatory and handbasin with supply of toiletries, fluffy towels and bathrobes about 20 yards from the wagon.

Guests at Gypsy Rose get a basket of fuel for the fires, all bedding and linen, and a generous basket including home-made cake, tea, coffee, milk, local bacon and sausages, eggs from our own hens, tomatoes and mushrooms for a full Forest breakfast. A complimentary basket of fresh warm-from-the-oven farmhouse breads will be delivered to your door every morning.

A haven for nature-lovers, sit up in bed to watch fish leaping the waterfall, the heron and kingfisher at work, and if you're lucky, the otter family in the brook. Gather your own food from the kitchen garden or look for eggs from our hens and ducks. You're in the heart of the country with direct access to lovely walks in the beautiful Forest of Dean, a secluded "secret" haven yet it's a 5 minute stroll to the local 17th Century pub, and a short walk to the village shops and restaurants.

In the wagon you'll find some traditional board games and even a concertina so you can make your own entertainment by candlelight, while in the garden there's a swingball set, trampoline and swings, wood fired pizza oven and BBQ

This is an experience of a lifetime, back to nature, back to the simple life. Expect to learn new skills, see something different, and leave with a real sense of achievement. Not part of a holiday complex or campsite, all you need is yourselves, a spirit of adventure and a sense of fun. We'll show you how to light fires and lanterns, and be here to offer help and guidance if needed. If you like your camping to be wild but not too wild, you'll love Gypsy Rose.

Dogs are welcome, but not allowed in the caravan. Children by arrangement - please contact the owner.

Getting around

The Forest is about 8 miles across and 17 miles north/south, so the best way of getting around is by car. Dedicated cycle tracks criss-cross the Forest (nearest is about a mile) and there are lots of lovely walks in the woods, Wye Valley and Severn estuary. The nearest bus-stop is about 300yds, with buses to Gloucester and through the Forest to Coleford running regularly. The Dean Forest steam Railway runs from Parkend (3miles) to Lydney.

Interaction with guest

On arrival you'll be met and shown to Gypsy Rose. Everything will be fully explained, from the pull-out bed to how to light the fires, and we'll always be on hand to help if needed (owners live on site). You'll have a Welcome hamper, a bag of logs and all you need to get a fire started, the kettle boiling and a welcome cuppa as you settle in. It's a few minutes' walk to the pub and village, and the Forest is on your doorstep - we'll guide you to the best walks/pubs/places of interest. Each morning, fresh breads from the farmhouse delivered to your door.

Very Good

“Relaxing break”

Reviewed 10 Feb 2020

Planned to stay in the caravan but given the option of the Apple Store instead which was nice and cosy. Welcomed with freshly baked welsh cakes, in fridge was a lovely hamper of bacon sausage eggs tomatoes and mushrooms for breakfast. We had a walk to village pub (10 mins away) for a drink and food which was nice and friendly! On return we built a fire at the caravans fire pit, sat with a drink fire gazing and listening to the waterfall close by! Oh and Mary popped around with freshly baked rolls and cinnamon buns in the morning!!

Owner's reply: It was a real pleasure to meet you both. I am blessed to have you and George come and stay, and so pleased that you enjoyed your Forest experience - especially meeting the wild boar! Yes, our visitor has been busy digging in our orchard, but I guess he's "doin' what comes naturally" to a pig, and the grass will soon recover. Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely Review of The Apple Store and Gypsy Rose, too! Looking forward to seeing you again soon.
