Description

La Cachette, and its sister house, Le Chai, are two properties situated next to each other in the heart of small traditional French village, Bize Minervois. Bize is in the Minervois appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) wine region, with river swimming available and three great restaurants within five minutes walking distance. So great food, great wine and a great way to work it all off!

Bize is a picturesque small village with a population of just over 1,000 situated on the edge of the Languedoc Regional Park. Parts of the village are very old, with the occasional tower or turret still remaining and both Prehistoric and Gallo-Roman remains have been identified close by. In medieval times, the village used to be completely walled and one of the original village great gateways still remains.

Parts of the village are very old, with the occasional tower or turret still remaining and both Prehistoric and Gallo-Roman remains have been identified close by. In medieval times, the village used to be completely walled and one of the original village great gateways still remains.

Bize is a perfect place for a restful holiday with a good range of local amenities. Bize itself has three excellent restaurants and a cafe bar/pizzaria. There is a mini market, two bakers, a chemist, two hairdressers, a beauty parlour, and a taxi office. There is even a mini cinema in the village hall. There is also a medical centre and a post office. The main attraction in Bize is the river swimming available in the centre of the village, which has a lifeguard during July and August. In July each year, there are festivities and fireworks for Bastille Day, followed the next weekend by the annual Olive festival.

The sub commune of Bize, Cabezac, which is only a mile away, has another two quality restaurants, another cafe bar (which has an Oyster man visit two evenings a week), and an excellent pizza takeaway. There is also a famous traditional olive oil factory which has won numerous Paris awards and is always full of tourists who come from miles away. The olives are gorgeous! By the end of summer 2013 there will also be a new supermarket here.

La Cachette (translates roughly as 'the little hideaway'), whilst being small, is best described as being 'cute'! This is the original house that the winemaker lived in and is therefore more authentic in its original features than Le Chai, and is situated above the ground floor of Le Chai and accessed via an external staircase with private gate.

The property is ideal for a couple with just one double bedroom with a king size bed with a memory foam mattress. There is a private terrace at the front of the house which catches the morning sun, perfect for a croissant breakfast (with the village baker less than 30 seconds away).

Enter via front door into kitchen / dining area with large old stone fireplace (not in use) as the backdrop. Kitchen well equipped with electric cooker, fridge and microwave. Small lounge area off to one side of the kitchen / dining area. French doors lead on to the terrace at the front of the house. Outside there is a terrace and there is a patio table & chairs set for use on the terrace.

An old stone narrow spiral staircase leads up to the 2nd floor and a small landing with two cupboards. One contains a washing machine. One door leads off to the main double bedroom, with king size bed. Ample storage space for clothes. Windows provide an outlook to both sides of the house, with one side with a view of the 18th century village church. Other door on the landing leads to the bathroom, with shower cubicle, toilet and basin.

We hope you will want to come and stay in Le Chai or La Cachette and experience all that Bize Minervois and the surrounding area has to offer.

Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

Bize Minervois is situated in the Department of Aude just south of the Black Mountains and the Languedoc Regional National Park, in the Minervois wine region, and close to the famous Canal du Midi. The Mediterranean beach resorts of Narbonne Plage and Gruissan are only 45 minutes away. The Pyrenees Mountains and the Spanish border are less than a 2 hour drive. The new bridge at Millau is also just under two hours away. The area is also famous as Cathar country, a history and people made famous due to a crusade against the local religion by the catholic church back in the year 1209. There are a number of magnificent Cathar fortresses close by such as Minerve, La Cité at Carcassonne. Local towns are Narbonne (20 mins), Bezier (30 mins).

Bize-Minervois

Bize is in the wine region of Minervois, famous for its quality AOC wines. Minervois as an AOC (appellation d'origine contrôlée) wine region has the honour of a premium AOC classification at La Livinière. The surrounding area is famous for the Minervois wine, with the Corbières, St Chinian and Jean de Minervois (famous for sweet desert wine) wine regions also close by.

Olives are also a local product and there is a local Olive Oil factory which has won many awards for its oil products, with the shop attached selling a variety of olive oil based and other local products. The famous Canal du Midi stretching from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic runs within a mile of the village and is ideal for walks, cycling or boating. Most villages have a fete (festival) at some time during the year, usually to celebrate something produced locally. Bize have their Fete de Olivier (olive festival) usually the weekend after Bastille Day on 14th July. Varied events happen in the village during this period of time, which include a motorcycle display, local produce market, live music in the main square, a mass village dinner, and two nights of very impressive firework displays.

“Beautiful, cute apartment in lovely village”

Reviewed 24 Jul 2014

Bize is a gorgeous place, with postcard scenery everywhere you look. La Cachette was great value - I stayed here with my husband and our friend. It is a very cute apartment and everything in town is only a few minutes walk away. There are also loads of lovely places to visit in a short car trip (if you can pull yourself away from Bize!). We were really happy at La Cachette and would happily stay here again if we were lucky enough to find ourselves in that part of the world again.
