Description from owner

Description

The Bothy is an old-style cottage set in an idylic garden. In the evening it is all your to wander in. The Historic Science Centre in the grounds shows the history of Birr Castle Demesne and the scientific achievements of the Parsons family. The Bothy is within walking distance of shops and pubs in the charming small town of Birr. This is an ideal area for a family holiday, with the river Shannon not far away and the Slieve Bloom Hills for walking. There is an equestrain centre nearby for horse riding. For those exploring their Irish roots or wishing to tour the countryside, Birr is the ideal location as most of Ireland is within reach of a day's drive and the motorway system is now helpful in this. Birr is a pleasant small town of 4,500 people. It has good shops and stores and also a small theatre and several friendly pubs. Also two or three good resteraunts. We have our own coffee shop, but there are more in the town.

I can provide a cot or fold out bed at small extra cost. The Bothy is all on one floor but it does have a step up to the mail bedroom. The kitchen is small and the mainroom is the living/dining room. We provide wood and turf for the fire, but it also has central heating.

Further details outdoors

The cottage is set behind a highwall in a semi-wooded area. It is secluded from the main area of the park and gardens of Birr Castle - see our website which will show the river walks and gardens available.

Location description from owner

The Province of Leinster region

Birr is a historic Georgian town, with beautifully laid out streets and malls. The Birr Castle Demesne, where the Bothy is located is a 150 accre garden and park which you will see on the website www.birrcastle.com. The historic Birr Castle is still lived in by the family, now Earls of Rosse. Lady Rosse runs the cottages - there are two in the grounds.

The area around Birr is of beautiful rural Irish scenery. The flat bogland of the Midlands, where turf is still cut, can be seen to the North of the town. The nearest large town is Tullamore, 30 minutes drive away, where you can get regular trains to Dublin for the day.

Birr

Clonmacnoise, on the Shannon, is an interesting place to visit, an ancient monastic site. The Slieve Bloom mountains are great for walking.

A day trip to Limerick or Galway is also within easy reach. And for Dublin you can get the train from Tullamore. Vintage week in August is a great time to visit Birr.
