“Utterly magical”

Reviewed 4 Jan 2016

I have probably, over the years, stayed in upwards of 30 holiday rentals so it is really saying something that this was by some margin the best break we have had. The cottage is ancient (1641) and full of character. Angela and Alban have renovated it from scratch and with Alban's skills as a carpenter and joiner the detail and quality is superb. The house is a paradise for children both inside and out. Inside there are many little quirks and details for children to spot (like a little mouse house in a cupboard and a hidden Percy Pig to find) and a very full dressing up box. Outside there are multiple play houses - but that is to belittle their amazing design. They have a fully kitted out shop for children to play in, an Elizabethan House, a castle, a jousting tent and more. The fireplace was just gorgeous and we remained cosy despite the incessant rain outside. I can't recommend highly enough. Angela and Alban have built something very special.

An utterly magical review thank you so much. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Spindle Cottage, this is what we aim for and we hope you will return one day in the not to distance future. Best wishes to you all. Angela & Alban

“An absolute gem of a find!”

Reviewed 1 Mar 2015

What can I say? We had a fantastic break in a beautiful part of the country, in the most gorgeous, special cottage with the loveliest hosts! Angela and Alban are the rare sort of couple you meet in life who just exude a sense of adventure, fun, and love of life. This is captured in their family home that they bravely bought in the 60's as a condemned building, as a young couple with a baby, and lovingly restored it back to life and so much more. Alban is a skilled, creative, carpenter by trade with a mischievous sense of humour. The house and gardens have to be seen to appreciate the workmanship and love that has gone into every detail. The cottage was so much more than we expected, cosy but spacious, everything carefully thought about and supplied and absolutely feeling like a real home. To top it off, the house is full of carpentry delights, quirkiness and surprises which bring out the childlike wonder in everyone, not to mention the garden which homes even more! On our first proper evening, our children (8 and 11 years) declared: "it feels more like home than home!" By the second night they were asking us if Angela and Alban might consider selling the cottage to us, and everyday they begrudgingly asked "do we have to go out, can't we stay here today?" Its located in a great part of the country with lots of things to see and do, and we did, packing it all in including, Bath, Wells, Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury, always coming home to a lovely evening by the fire, the children (yes even the 11 year old boy) could not get enough of being a shop keeper in the victorian post office in the garden. Within 12 hours of coming home, I found myself googling more things to do in the mendips to warrant another visit! The children were both in the shed trying to make a 'fairy door' out of a log, and my husband was looking at home improvements in a whole new light! Thank you Angela and Alban for a wonderful break. We would love to come back in a warmer season, just to experience the Greek geraniums and try out your fantastic barbecue area!

MY, my what a fantastic review. That is so overwhelming, you were lovely guests and we would be thrilled to see you again. Children say such brilliant things don't they, I think your son and daughter would enjoy making something in wood with Alban when you come again. We wish you well in all that you do, if you need any advice on your own home improvements just ask I'm sure Alban would be please to give you some useful advice. Take care and much love to you all. Angela

“Fantastic location to chill out”

Stayed over new year period. Angie and Alban made us extremely welcome. Our grandchildren came with us and loved exploring the little shop, elizabethan house etc in the garden. Everything we could have wanted in Spindle Cottage we were very comfortable and completey relaxed with evenings by the fireside.

It was pleasure to see you again with your lovely family this time. Your grandchildren are great and it was wonderful for us to see them playing and enjoying the little playhouses. Glad you made the most of the wood burning stove and it was fun being invited in for drinks on New Years day, it was a good start to 2015. Thank you. Lots of love, Angela & Alban

“Spindle Cottage is simply lovely - I would thoroughly recommend it!”

This rental is beautiful - a lovely and very convenient location, within easy reach of Bath and Bristol, but set in the heart of the Mendips. The cottage itself is a delight - beautifully appointed, with every convenience and comfort, and the decor is cottagey and very individual - I discovered new delights every day -

So glad you enjoyed your stay at Spindle Cottage. We certainly enjoyed you all being here. You were perfect guests and you left the cottage so clean and tidy you are welcome here anytime. Thank you Angela

“Fantastic, friendly and fascinating!”

Reviewed 1 Jan 2014

Spindle Cottage is like no other cottage I have stayed in before. It is beautifully set up with quirky little doors, fantastic stain glass details and a magical feel. The cottage was extremely warm and cosy yet still spacious. Angela and Alban Bunting are very friendly and welcoming. I really enjoyed reading about how they came to be at Spindle Cottage and all the hard work it took to to get it looking as beautiful as it does now. We used the cottage as a base to visit Bristol, Bath, Wells and Glastonbury which are all close by car.

Thank you for taking time out in your busy life to write such a lovely review and on New Years Day as well. Very inspiring for the rest of 2014. Hope we can welcome you again. Kind regards Angela

“A unique and wonderful cottage with delightful owners.”

I have been going to Spindle Cottage since 1996, usually for two or three times a year. Over this period of time I have made great friends with Alban and Angela and they are magnificent hosts. I have introduced some of my own friends to the cottage and have been there with friends, family and my partner. My children are now grown up as are my grandchildren and unfortunately they visited before the advent of the wonderful buildings in the garden, Ruth's cottage was the first in 2002 followed by Tom's Lodge and Charlottes Post Office, a wonderful tribute to the Bunting's own grandchildren. I can only imagine what paradise it must be for the young visitors and a delight to the parents who do not have to spend time entertaining them. The cottage itself is a one off. So many quirks and features. It is comfortable and well stocked with all that is needed in a self catering establishment. The Bunting's are always at hand to help if required. Old or young will find this a restful haven for a holiday and I would recommend anyone to give it a try. You only have to read the visitors book to realise how many revisit year after year and overseas visitors are in raptures with the unique residence.

We certainly count you as our friends as well, after all these years and the many holidays you have spent at Spindle Cottage, the fun we have had in your company and outings we have shared together we thank you. Many thanks for writing a glorious review and we look forward to seeing you later this year. Angela

“Magical stay in a fairytale place....”

Reviewed 28 Sep 2013

I've been taking my (now 80 year old) mother on an annual vacation for a week for about 10 years now. We've visited all over the UK and over the years the trip has grown to include 2 uncles and an aunt also.... This year's trip was to the village of Binegar and the wonderful Spindle Cottage. Despite "iffy" weather I think the greatest endorsement was, when dropping my Mum home after te holiday, she turned round to me and said "that was the best holiday we've ever had". Right from the start Angela (owner) was incredibly accommodating, evening inviting a further Uncle to park his motorhome on their green. So friendly and helpful during the booking process. But when we arrived. Wow. Such a beautiful cottage, it's hard to convey just how wonderful. A stunning old building lovely handcrafted and artistically shaped by Alban (Angela's husband) - an incredibly talented and creative individual. It truly is a unique property... A beautiful old building but filled with artistic quirks from stone gargoyle in the conservatory, hand carved mice in the woodwork, stained glass swans set into the doors... And on, and on.... My relative spent almost one full day exploring the cottage and it's gems and quirks! And then you venture outside!!! A beautiful garden, sheep grazing outside, and even a miniature post office which has to be seen to be believed as well as "lodge", "castle" and "cottage"..... All built to look authentic and 100 years old, but in reality built for their own children. I could go on and on and on. It's a truly beautiful cottage, I am sure one of the most wonderful in the country. It's a delight for adults of any age, and paradise for children with toys, dressing up, and all the children's buildings outside to play in. Simply put. I cannot recommend the cottage highly enough. Spectacular!! And then, once there, you are in the most wonderful area. The beautiful locations to visit from Wells (Cathedral, shops and the stunning Bishops Palace and Gardens), Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury and no end of museums, gardens, stately homes, potteries etc etc etc. And even more wonderful restaurants, pubs etc etc.... Hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did!!

I love your Mum she felt like family to me, & not forgetting aunt & uncles as well, such dear folks and may I say what a brilliant son you are. You were so attentive with making sure that Mum would be able to cope with the stairs and then giving her the double unsuite, you are good and I know she appreciates all you do for her. Thank her for her lovely remarks about her stay here at Spindle Cottage and we look forward to seeing you all again. Take care Angela

We loved the cottage and garden, full of surprises and attention to detail. The lovely hosts, Angela and Alban made us feel at home. This is a most wonderful family-friendly place. The kids loved it. Alban, a master carpenter, built a truly amazing home. We warmly recommend a stay in Spindle Cottage.

Thank you for your wonderful review. We love having you and your family here. It was great meeting you all and seeing the children have a brilliant holiday. We look forward to you all returning. Angela

“Lovely Little Cottage”

Reviewed 6 Jul 2013

Lovely cottage, very quiet and peaceful. Lots to do and see around Somerset; we particularly enjoyed Hartley's Kitchen, a small cafe about five minutes from the cottage. All in all a very relaxing holiday.

Thank you so much for your lovely review and we shall let Paul know that you have enjoyed his wonderful cafe/bistro, we love his food too and being only five minutes away makes for a real treat not to cook that day. We shall be there for lunch tomorrow. Angela

“A little bit of heaven on earth”

Reviewed 4 Jul 2013

Angela and Alban the host's are such genuinely nice people and we were warmly welcomed with a delicious home made cream tea. The 1640 cottage surrounded by several beautifully built child size buildings including a Post Office, gothic style cottage and thatched playhouses, all made what it is today by the owners over many years was a magical place where children would be in their element. The beds were so comfortable you went to sleep in seconds and the water was always nice and hot for showers baths etc.Well equipped, even supplying hot water bottles for the cooler months everything you could need was thought of. The wood burning stove was so easy to get going even we managed it. By the end of the week we felt totally rested, stress free, sad to leave and with a strange feeling it wouldn't be the last time we saw our lovely host's whom we felt we had lived part of their dream with in this very personalised cottage where you could feel the warmth within. Hope to return.

That was just what we were aiming for, to share our beautiful dream cottage with you our guests. So glad you felt it's warmth, charm and enjoyed your holiday, you are most welcome to come again and again as many of our visitors do. Thank you for your wonderful review and for being our guests. Angela
