- Very Good
Lovely place to stay nice a cosy we did not need to use the log burner but I guess it would of been very nice in the colder months beautiful views around the cottage...great area for walk especially down to the river dove and in to hartington (mustvisitcheese shop) very close to the picturesque towns of Buxton and Bakewell (tarts are amazing)
“Some very good points.. some bad.hence average score”
First the good bits. .. its in a great location, two lovely villages in very easy and worthwhile walk plus others to drive to or extended walk to. The dovedale walk is amazing but my tip is to start at the Milldale end. It's nicer and parking is free!the house is warm once all the heating is on, bed very comfy and the kitchen was reasonably well stocked, so you can easily eat and sleep in very good comfort. Bad bit's. . Well you'll note there are no bathroom pics. That's because it's at best a tiny wet room, an after thought. The drains aren't up to the job and the floor floods bad. There's virtually no room to turn around. . You'll find yourself getting dry in the kitchen. Not ideal. Despite there clearly being a pile of towels in one of the pictures, we got told towels are not normally included, not ideal and very unusual, but the owner did drop some to us. The house was freezing when we arrived after a 4 hour drive. It would have been nice if at leave one radiator was on to greet us. Theres virtually no 'mood' lighting. . Just some giant 250 wattish industrial type floodlight.. hardly romantic. But the biggest gripe was the overpowering 'art' for sale on the wall. It's like living in an advert. Oh... and don't be fooled by the projector. .. it works but isn't wired for sound. I wouldn't recommend the place and wouldn't go back. . But judging by other reviews some people like it. Though to give the place 5 stars is a joke. You'd have to take at least one off for the bathroom! Maybe those people have never actually stayed in a 5 star place. .. I don't know. .
The location of the barn is ideal, everyone we met in the villages of Biggin and Hartington was friendly and welcoming. Having the log fire was a real treat, even if we struggled to light it. The bed was comfortable and the kitchen was adequately equipped. Our only issue with it were the cleanliness. One of the throws on one of the beds had stains on it and there was food residue on the oven gloves and one of the spatulas. Overall there was dust and cobwebs throughout the property but the shower and the toilet had been cleaned. The shower was a little tricky initially, but we mastered getting a consistent temperature. The owners cat was very friendly too! We had a lovely time, thank you.
“Perfect retreat, had a brilliant time there”
This place is perfect for exploring the surrounding Dales. It's very close to loads of walks and bike rides like the Tissington Trail and river Dove. You're in a converted barn in an old farm set in a quiet hamlet, surrounded by hills and dry-stone walls. The manager is really easy to get along with and we had a fantastic time there. Would definitely go back and would recommend it to anyone that wants a taste of the real Peak District.
