The South Lanarkshire region

The Scottish Borders is a beautiful area of Scotland with glorious hills rising to 2700ft, gentle valleys and picturesque fishing villages.

The river Tweed runs through the centre of the region from its source above Tweedsmuir to the sea at Berwick-upon-Tweed, fed by its many tributaries and providing some of the best fishing in Scotland.

As well as fishing, you can try your hand at golf, riding, walking or cycling on waymarked routes or mountain biking at the world renowned centre of Glentress/Innerleithen.

You'll discover friendly towns and charming villages, while castles such as Floors and Neidpath, abbeys such as Melrose, stately homes such as Traquar and museums illustrate the exciting and often bloody history of the area. This history is commemorated in the Common Ridings and other local festivals, creating a colourful pageant much enjoyed by visitors and native Borderers alike.

The Borders is a region famed for its textiles, you can browse and buy beautiful tweeds and tartans and the highest quality knitwear from the Borders mills and shops.

Eating out is a pleasure too - with a choice of hotels, inns, restaurants and cafes. The region draws on the best of the land and sea and serves it up in style. Ales brewed to an ancient recipe, sugary confections boasting local town names, hearty fish soups with Gaelic seasoning, salmon and game smoked to a distinctive Borders cure - make you hungry just thinking about them! And the chefs of the Borders have this all at hand. Many of the towns of the region still boast a local butchers shop and bakery, so you too can create fine dishes from the best of the Borders too.

Nestling in the north west corner of The Scottish Borders, The New Farmhouse is less than 3km from the pretty market town of Biggar which is bisected by the A72 on the line of a Roman Road which linked Clyde Valley to their Fort in Musselburgh. It is home to many small locally run shops including butchers, bakers, gift shops, cafes and restaurants. It boasts 5 museums and a wonderful puppet theatre as well as boating pond and golf course. For those seeking arts, crafts, theatre, music and cinema, check out what's on at Biggar Corn Exchange. Nearby is the World Heritage Site at New Lanark where you can discover the fascinating history of this impressive cotton mill village and the life and times of mill manager and social pioneer Robert Owen in the award-winning Visitor Centre.

The area is surrounded by magnificent hills and nearby is the John Buchan way which goes from Broughton to Peebles.

Peebles itself is half an hour by car; A Royal Burgh since 1152 and the rule of King David I, Peebles has for many years been a market town cherished by locals and visitors alike for its picturesque and unspoilt character. The town has something for everyone, from outdoors activities like fishing, walking, golf, cycling and horse riding to fine shopping and award winning restaurants. The 240 seat Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre is a centre of excellence attracting touring theatre companies, performing visual arts, dance, craft, music and cinema all year round. Peebles also has the distinction of being ranked as the Top Independent Retailing Town in Scotland, and second in the UK, for its range of independent shops and 'home town' identity in contrast to the ubiquitous 'cloned towns' predominant in other areas.

"Beautiful lodge and location"

We stayed here for the bank holiday weekend. There were four adults, four kids and three dogs. The lodge was very clean and tidy. There was plenty of room for all of us to sleep and the main living area is a real hub for the house with a log burner in the middle. The views are fantastic and Biggar is just down the road for local shops. The garden was secure so ideal for the dogs or for families with younger children. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a base to explore Scotland or just for a bit of piece and quite. We will definitely be back.

"Great place, clean, well presented, spacious well looked after"

Stayed over Christmas visiting my parents in a nearby village, with my family (wife, 21 yo, 18 yo and 15 yo). It was spacious, had enough bathrooms for everyone and for their privacy, a great kitchen with separate utility room for drying the clothes, a really nice veranda in to the living room, a real log fire which the kids loved, comfy furniture, snuggly beds, clean and tidy. Has Freeview and DVD player, even a couple of games and DVDs as well. Wifi is the only thing that would be great to have but understandable why it doesnt. Loved it so much we are staying again in the summer 2013

When we arrived way before our check in time, Joyce was there cleaning from the previous renters. Not only was she gracious enough to let us in very early and clean around us, she offered to carry our cases in. The accomodation was immaculate and nothing was too much trouble for Joyce. We extended our stay as we enjoyed it so much. There was more firewood delivered and nothing was too much trouble. The scenery from the New Farmhouse is Scotland at its best. We will definately stay there again and would recommend this property to any of our friends travelling from Canada to Scotland. This property is amazing value for money and housed six of us comfortably.

"A truly memorable holiday in a wonderful lodge in a peaceful setting!"

Stayed with my partner and teenage children. Very spacious and comfortable. Quality of bedding was excellent. Biggar had great eating establishments. Lodge had everything you could want- a home from home. Spotlessly clean.
