“Delightful welcoming cottage.”

Reviewed 20 Feb 2016

It was an absolute delight to turn the key and step into this charming cottage. Hilary is a fantastic host. She preempted many of our needs and ensured we were comfortable with everything. The kitchen was modern and well equipped .. a pleasure to cook in. Ferniehaugh is a great place to relax. It is cosy ,has great views from the bedroom and super comfy bed with luxurious linen. A truly memorable holiday home.

I so much enjoyed welcoming you to the cottage over Christmas and was delighted that you could feel so much at home. You were fantastic guests and I hope very much indeed that you can make the long journey back again one day. In the meantime, all the best!

“Fantastic”

Reviewed 17 Feb 2016

This is a fabulous cottage which is so much bigger then it appears from the outside, it's well equipped, clean, well maintained, warm and welcoming, as is the greeting from Hilary. The log fire is a fantastic feature on a winters evening and was well used during our stay. The cottage itself is situated just off the main high street in Biggar and in easy reach of all amenities and bus services into Edinburgh. We fell in love with this fantastic holiday home and would highly recommenced this as an alternative to a hotel or bed and breakfast. Would look to staying here again without doubt.

It was great to meet you and I'm delighted that the cottage exceeded your expectations and also that you had such a good time in Biggar and around. You were great guests and I hope very much indeed to see you back again in the future!

“A cottage that offered everything we needed”

Reviewed 6 Nov 2015

We booked this cottage because it was in a handy location to visit our relatives. Once we arrived we realised that it offered a lovely place to escape to and that Biggar is a lovely place to walk around and a real community in its own right. We will return.

Thank you for this and also for your kind comments in the visitors book in the cottage. I'm so pleased that both Ferniehaugh itself and Biggar as a location was a success and shall look forward to seeing you again in the future!

“Nothing short of Fabulous!”

Reviewed 30 Aug 2015

This was the best self catering cottage we've stayed in while visiting Scotland. If you are looking for a century old one bedroom cottage in a medieval former market town near Edinburgh or Glasgow (30 minutes drive), this is it! The town of Biggar is full of history, charm and warm people. Ferniehaugh is perfectly located on a lane that parallels the main street, or "High Street" which is less than a mile from end to end, but bass all you need for a great holiday. Four great pubs (that's important) all within walking distance from Ferniehaugh and "The Crown" & "The Elfinstone" offer great food. Numerous restaurants and cafe's which includes The Taj Mahal, and award winning Indian restaurant which offers the best Indian food in Scotland. (No exaggeration) There are lots of little boutique shop offering everything from souvenirs clothing. Great butchers shops, a bakery and the best ice cream in the UK at "Taylors" on the high street. Biggar is soooo worth a visit. Ferniehaugh is the ideal place to stay if you are looking for a one bedroom self catering cottage. First of all Hilary, the owner is fantastic. She really makes you feel at home. The little stone cottage it's self looks small from the outside, but when you enter from the lane it opens up to a lovely and spacious living area complete with wood stove and comfortable furnishings that match the architecture and style of the cottage perfectly. Through the french doors you will find a large modern kitchen and eating area, and beyond that a very comfortable solarium. perfect for two, but room enough to entertain a few friends that may live in the area. The bedroom is also deceptively large and is equipped with the most important piece of furniture in a self catering cottage... an extremely comfortable bed.! The stairs are quite steep, so good mobility is a must. The cottage is very well kept and very clean. It has all the amenities of a modern home which include TV DVD player, washing machine, dishwasher, fully equipped kitchen and gas central heating with an abundance of hot water for showers. Parking is redly available on the lane or on the street next to the lane. Bottom line, this is a great place to call home when visiting the Biggar area. We will be back!

Thank you so much for your fabulous review - and for being such fabulous guests! I'm so pleased that Ferniehaugh ticks all the boxes. My aim is to make the cottage exactly as I would like it to be if I were to rent it for myself - and, as my husband will tell you, I'm picky! Also, delighted that you fully appreciate everything Biggar has to offer. It really is quite a unique little town. I hope very much indeed to see you back again as soon as possible!

“Beautiful cottage, warm welcome.”

Reviewed 10 Aug 2015

We stayed in the cottage as a base for exploring Edinburgh and the surrounding areas. It is a lovely comfotable cottage with everything you could need! We were greated by Hilary with a warm welcome and she took time to explain how things worked, nothing was too much trouble. The cottage is in a great location on the town for shops and places to eat. Great place to stay would recommend.

It was a pleasure to meet you and to welcome you to Ferniehaugh. I am delighted that the cottage lived up to its promise in both comfort and location - and hope very much to see you back to explore a bit more in the future!

“Lovely cottage and an ideal base for exploring southern Scotland”

Reviewed 12 Jul 2015

The cottage was very spacious and nicely furnished, Streetviewing it can be misleading as it opens up into a much larger space. It is also fitted and kitted out to a very good standard (especially for cooks). Parking is convenient and we had a warm welcome - including by the owner of the high quality Indian takeaway in the town! We had an amazing week in the south of Scotland, who would have expected temperatures in the 30's, as we were able to travel to both East and West, to Loch Lomond and North Berwick (book early for the boat trip to see the puffins and gannet colonies). Biggar has a scenic public park, lots of coffee shops and handy small supermarkets. We also loved Peebles and New Lanark/Falls of Clyde. And compared to Brighton, everywhere is just so clean and tidy...

It was great to meet you and I'm so pleased your holiday was such a success. I'm especially delighted that you enjoyed the 'wee house' - and discovered that it is not in fact so wee. Following your comments, I will put a more representative photograph on the website because several other guests have commented as soon as they arrive that they are amazed to find how spacious it actually is! Thanks again for taking the time to give a great review and I hope very much to see you back in Biggar in the future.

“Beautiful cosy cottage”

Beautiful cottage, warm and cosy, lovely log burner. Kitchen is very well equipped & bed really comfortable. Beams are great feature. I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone who wants a relaxing time in a lovely village with some interesting shops

“The best of the best”

Reviewed 6 Apr 2014

The wee house in Biggar is as good as it gets - excellent facilities - very clean - very comfortable bed - all the accessories you could want with a very well appointed kitchen and comfortable front room to enhance anyone's stay Local parking with all shops within a 5 minute walk and plenty of eating places. All of this with an extremely helpful owner in Hilary This accommodation is excellently placed as most of the Borders you wish to visit are within a 30 mile radius and Glasgow & Edinburgh within easy reach We will certainly return

Thank you so much for your lovely review and we are really delighted that you enjoyed it so much. As you are the first ever guests to stay at the house, it is really important to know that we have got it right. I'm especially pleased you enjoyed the bed - it's such a major factor in the success of a stay away from home! We hope very much u will be back soon and look forward to seeing you next time!
