BURGH ISLAND

Bigbury's most famous landmark is the iconic Burgh Island, which overlooks the beach itself. The Burgh Island Hotel was built in 1929, extended in 1932 and since 2006 has been completely restored to its 30's glamour. The beauty and intrigue of the island has drawn many famous visitors here including Edward and Mrs Simpson, The Beatles, Noel Coward and Agatha Christie who wrote two of her novels here. The island is accessible at low tide, when the waters reveal a causeway that links it to the beach. However even when the tide is in, you can still reach the island by hitching a ride with the infamous and popular Sea Tractor.

LOCAL HISTORY

The early history of the island is unclear, however it is mentioned in early records and on maps as St Michael's Island. Later the name changed to Borough Island, eventually being corrupted to Burgh. As late as 1947 an Ordnance Survey map refers to the island as Borough Island. In 1908 a postcard produced by Stengel & Co Ltd of London referred to it as Burr Island. A map published in 1765 shows "Borough or Bur Isle".

It is believed a monastery was established on the island, most of the remains of which may lie beneath the current hotel. The ancient Pilchard Inn may have started life as the guest lodgings for the monastery.

A small, perhaps transient, population of fishermen occupied the island following the dissolution of the monastery, specialising in pilchard fishing. There are the remains of a chapel a-top the island, which was later became a "huers hut" - a place where fishermen would make a "hue and cry" call to inform other fishermen of shoals of pilchards. During this period smuggling, wrecking and piracy were common, benefiting from a natural barrier for half the day.

Fears of German landing forces using the island as a beachhead during World War II resulted in the area's fortification with anti-tank defences as well as two pill boxes, positioned on either side of the causeway. An observation post was also established on the summit to monitor the coastline.

THE BEACH

Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Bigbury on Sea beach is ideal for family holidays. Dusted with sand and lapped by shallow waters, the beach offers safe fun for groups particularly if you've got children in tow. In addition, Bigbury on Sea beach is dotted with rock pools, so there's plenty of creepy-crawly entertainment for budding marine biologists. The beach is popular with families and there are a number of facilities and activities available if you're seeking a bit more excitement on your holiday.

Bigbury on Sea beach has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag in recognition of the beach's excellent standards, particularly its efforts to make the beach accessible to everyone. In addition to good disabled access, Bigbury on Sea beach also provides Beach Wheelchairs for those with mobility requirements.

There's a wide and varied selection of water sports available if you prefer more of an adrenaline rush. If you want to try something different from the usual bodyboarding or surfing then windsurfing and kite-surfing are gaining popularity here, with hire facilities located right on the beach.

To give you some peace of mind, there are lifeguards present at Bigbury on Sea beach during May to September and the beach also has a first-aid room.

The beach has good facilities including a café that specialises in selling organic and local food. Its 'surf 'n' turf is one of the best in the area and makes good use of locally sourced ingredients to create a delicious platter that everyone will enjoy.

“If you love the ocean, this is the place for you”

Reviewed 20 Sep 2016

Burgh Island Causeway 16 was all which had been promised via the webpage and much more - simply fantastic! Such a lovely, immaculately kept and luxurious apartment with fantastic views, peaceful surroundings and the soothing sound of the ocean's waves; it was perfect for us an our teenage daughter, who was as much delighted by the tasteful interior as I myself had been when booking it. We will miss the view from the windows and the sound of the sea!

Owner's reply: Thanks so much for your wonderful review - much appreciated and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future

“Simply Superb”

Reviewed 11 Nov 2015

We have just returned from another stay at Apartment 16 and are already checking our diaries to book our next Bigbury break. The apartment is beautifully decorated, combining homeliness with 5* luxury and the views across the causeway are like no other. It’s very clean and has everything you could possibly need including a telescope for a spot of dolphin watching (we saw dolphins last visit but sadly missed them this year - the people watching was nearly as good). Wendy's thoughtful touches made all the difference particularly to our 5 month and 3 year old sons. There were bed bumpers for the toddler, a comfy cot bed and lovely high chair for the baby as well as flags for the tops of our sand castles - which we made good use of on 6 of the 7 days. The pool and jacuzzi were a welcome escape from the weather and the new management team is doing a wonderful job in the cafe. Andrea’s home cooking is delicious and her banofee pie is really worth trying, as the menu suggests!

Owner's reply: Thanks so much to the Waddington family for this review. It was a pleasure to have you stay again and I'm so pleased the children enjoyed the flags :) - look forward to seeing you back again soon

“Perfect Appartment”

This apartment is pure luxury in a beautiful location. The owner is so lovely - absolutely delightful. She couldn't do enough to ensure that our stay was perfect. She even went out of her way to ensure that gluten free cake was given as a gift for my son on our arrival. The apartment has everything you could possibly need - and more. All furnishings and fittings are done to an exceptional high standard.

Owner's reply: Your kind response is much appreciated. We look forward to welcoming you back in August next year. Best wishes Wendy

Don't hesitate to rent this apartment, it has everything you need (don't forget to take your own towels for swimming). It has stylishly and thoughtfully been put together for guests comfort and pleasure. The location and facilities are great with a super new management team for the apartments. The owners of this apartment really care about your experience and you won't be disappointed. If you are, you're harder to please than me and I loved it.

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay - it is truly appreciated. We look forward to welcoming you back again very soon. Have a great Summer - best wishes Wendy

“A stunning apartment in a beautiful location”

Reviewed 20 Jan 2014

This apartment takes your breath away from the moment you arrive. The views of Burgh Island and the beach are absolutely spectacular. The apartment is pristine with an interior that is incredibly stylish and luxurious yet, so comfortable with everything you could possibly need for the perfect break away. So much attention to detail has gone into this apartment including gorgeous lights, artwork, furniture, wonderful towels and very snuggly duvets. There was tea, cookies and even pre-stamped postcards to send home! The complex has an indoor pool and Jacuzzi which were impressive both during the day and at night when all lit up. The onsite coffee shop / bar is a great place to share a drink with friends and the staff there were very welcoming and helpful. We had a delicious curry at the Pilchard Inn on one evening which has stood since the 1300’s. On the Saturday we had a very unusual but entertaining black tie dinner over on Burgh Island at the unique hotel which is steeped in history and mystery and an experience I would thoroughly recommend. There are lots of walks along the coastal paths around this apartment and the beach being so close is just fantastic. I had a wonderful weekend here with friends but it felt like longer because it was so relaxing. I would definitely love to return and can’t speak highly enough of apartment number 16!

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for such a detailed review. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and had a relaxing weekend. I look forward to welcoming you back again
