The Occitanie region

Beziers is located on the Canal du Midi, and is not very far from the Mediterranean beaches of Valras Plage and Serignan Plage.

It is an old city, one of the oldest in France, with a infamous past. The Phoenicians traded here centuries before Christ and it was the Romans who created a permanent town and trading post. There are significant Roman remains in Bezier's museum and new sites are being discovered and excavated on a regular basis. One is currently being excavated behind the apartment, building.

Beziers and North Africa was a regular trading route, hence the emblem of Beziers, a Camel.

Beziers most famous historical link is possibly the troubled times of the Cathars. It took the pious Catholics of a thousand years ago over a hundred years to search out and destroy this peaceful and humanist religious sect.

Beziers was the centre of the wine trade for the Ist World War. Each soldier, seaman and even airman, was entitled to half a litre of wine per day. Hence, the Languedoc became the wine basket for France. A gold bullion train arrived in Beziers once a year to pay the wine producers. There are numerous chateaus in the region, each competing with architectural grandeur to 'out do' their
neighbour.

In recent history the famous resistance leader in the second world war, Jeanne Jaures, a son of Beziers. His exploits are heroic, but sadly he came to a tragic and desperate end at the hands of the Nazi in Montpelier in 1943. His statue and memorial can be found in the parc de poets.

Beziers

Avenue Alphonse Mas is one of the main arteries leading from Les Halles and the Marie down to the roundabout at the top of Avenue Gambetta, which leads on to the railway station.

This was one of the majestic boulevards created in the ' Haussman style 'in the 19th century. Both Eiffel and Haussman are responsible for some excellent architecture in the city. Rue de la Republic is a prime example of this glorious period of design.

A wander around the old city can reveal remains of Beziers' medieval past. It is not uncommon to see medieval windows, arches and statuary carved into some of the buildings.

The Allee Paul Ricquett, the main avenue of Beziers, a majestic tree lined boulevard hosts markets most days of the week. The most famous being the weekly flower market on a Friday. At the end of the Allee is the Opera House which was the second largest Opera House in France, now sadly underused.

There is a significant Arab population in the City. This distinctive ethnic group are prospering and new shops and businesses abound. We shop at the Arab butchers who sell Halal meet. These shops are spotless and their lamb, chicken and veal is excellent quality and very well priced.

All French shops close on a Sunday. Exceptions are a few supermarkets, which close at lunch time, and Les Halles which has a very lively restaurant and bar which opens early in the morning and closes at 4.00 pm. A little reminiscent to the old trading markets in London.

In the Arab areas most shops are open and meat and vegetables are readily available.

Each August Beziers hosts the annual ' Feria ', where the matadors taunt and kill the bulls. My utter disgust and horror of such a spectacle leaves me......well !!!! The plus side is that Beziers becomes an outdoor music and food festival. If you are young and have the stamina, it is an all night party. If you are one of the Baby Boomers, go early, eat, drink, go to bed at a respectable hour and take a sleeping pill.

Beziers has something for everyone. Do your homework.
