Location description from owner

The Wales region

Our comfortable self catering cottage is nestled on the side of Betws Mountain only about 1 mile from Ammanford on the opposite side to the famous Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. There are no dirt tracks to go down making it easy to get to.

At the side of the Cottage is a public walk which brings you to a small cascading Waterfall and if you wish then you can carry on the small walk back on to the road. Remember to bring your wellingtons though!

The Cottage is ideal for couples and families alike. Walking or biking is right on the doorstep and it is just over a mile to get to the top of Betws Mountain and enjoy the breathtaking views over the valleys and the Black Mountains. On the way up or down you can stop for refreshment and/or a great meal at the Scotch Pine where you can again have fantastic views overlooking the Amman Valley.

There are many medieval castles in the area within easy drive of the cottage including Carreg Cennen which has breathtaking panoramic views, vaulted passageway and underground cave. Dinefwr Castle is set in 800 acres of parkland which is home to the fallow deer and while you are there check out the great views or visit Newton House which has been splendidly restored. Kidwelly Castle is really well preserved it's worth a visit and have that feeling of going back in time. That just mentions a few castles but there is an information pack in the cottage with more information.

Staying on the historical line there are a variety of Museums such as the Maritme Museum in Swansea.

If you like exploring gardens the National Botanical Garden of Wales which is "The Jewel in Carmarthenshire's Crown" and is within easy reach of the cottage. It has a beautiful Glasshouse with numerous plants from around the world, some being rare and most endangered.

Aberglassney gardens offers the magic of the past with its main house steeped in history whilst the gardens hava a formal touch and offer a variety of focal points including the Cloister Garden and The Yew Tunnel .

We also have a few parks such as Gelli Aur where you can see wildlife such as deer, peacocks & squirrels etc.
& not to mention the wonderful blooms of the rhododendrons and azaleas in April/May. There is also a cafe and a small children's play area as well as some pleasant walks to stretch your legs and enjoy the fresh Welsh air.

In the Mumbles area is the lovely Clyne Garden and although it's a lovely place to walk and enjoy anytime of year, the best time is April - May where your eyes will be amazed at the variety and smell of the Rhododendrons and Azaleas. Really Gorgeous!!

On the opposite side of our valley are the Black Mountains with fabulous views for miles on a clear day and not forgetting the walks all the way to the Brecon Beacons if you desire.

Our cottage is not far off from the brook where the singer Donald Peers wrote his famous song "In a shady nook by a Babbling Brook".

The Cottage is ideally situated as it is central to many towns such as Neath, Llanelli, Carmarthen and Swansea. Also there is the pretty town of Llandeilo where there are some great little shops for finding gifts, enjoying a great coffee, there are some brilliant antique shops to walk around, great on a rainy day but take plenty of cash or a credit card. Next to "The Works Antiques" is a Garden Centre with really good quality shrubs and plants and the owner is very knowledgeable too. While you're in the area too Dinefwr Castle is worth a visit as mentioned earlier.

The dinosaur park and caves is worth a visit at the Dan Yr Ogaf Caves where the children can size up the dinosaurs on display or enter into the caves but don't forget to take a torch

Pembrey Country Park offers Dry Ski Slopes and toboganning so if you fancy a challenge this is the place to go. If you are not feeling that energetic why not take the train ride and relax whilst enjoying the views?
You can take the bike and enjoy a ride with the children in safety from the traffic. And if the kids still have plenty of energy to burn off they can enjoy the children's activity area. The beach is also to be found there as well as other entertainment so don't forget the buckets and spades.

In Swansea there is the Plantasia, an indoor hot house with exoctic plants. Also in Swansea there are Museums and of course the Mumbles which offers great Fish and Chips and Ice Cream Parlours as well as other nice places to eat.

The Gower coastline is within easy drive of the cottage with its fabulous beaches and views. Rhossili beach is a spacious beach with plenty of elbow room even on the busiest of days. It is also ideal for surfers along with Paragliders flying from the cliffs.
But if you don't mind travelling, Tenby is also worth a visit as it is a beautiful town and has clean beaches.

We have several Golf Courses in the area, just to name a few there is Machynys Golf Club, Glyn Abbey, and Glynhir and Parc Garnant are the nearest being around 4 miles away of the Holiday Cottage.

For families there is also an artificial Ice Skating rink, Quad Bikes and paintballing, Chocolate Factory and lots more.

The area surrounding Neath has many attractions too. Here is a small selection Neath has to offer:

There are a number of fabulous Waterfalls in the area such as Aberdulais Falls which is part of the National Trust and on site there is a cafe for refreshments.
Margam Park offers parklands, gardens, Museum, walks, children's play area, narrow gauge Railway and cafe.
Afan Forest Park is ideal for Mountain Biking

Tenby is about an hour away and is a beautiful place, very quaint with a stunning coastline. Saundersfoot is it's neighbouring town which has long stretched out sandy beaches, plenty of room for everybody!

Ammanford is a small town but has a variety of shops including supermarkets (Tescos, Lidls and Iceland), Post Office, Banks with ATM machines, Cafes and Bars which serve meals, to mention just a few. It is an ideal base for exploring South Wales including Pembrokeshire and the Brecon Beacons.

By the M4 there is Quad Biking. An artificial Ice skating Rink for the youngsters and a Fun House.

Horse Riding, Fishing and a whole lot more is on offer in the area.

“Cosy with great value for money”

Everything was great except for the toilet door, which didn't close properly. Thumbs up! Good host, well equiped cottage.

Sorry about the door. Will try and sort it. Thanks for letting us know

“Lovely Comfy Cottage”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2012

This was our first trip to South Wales, and I'm sure it won't be the last. The cottage was ideal, very clean and comfortable, with everything that you are likely to need. The owners Dave and June were very welcoming, and gave us advice about places to visit, eat etc. The cottage is ideal for a couple, and although there is a double sofa bed in the living room, the only toilet is in the ensuite of the bedroom, so could be a bit awkward if 4 people were staying. There are some beautiful places to visit nearby, so all in all I would recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a peacefull quiet break away.

It's great to hear your thoughts about Acorn Hedge Cottage, whether good or bad as it helps us to keep trying to do the right things for the comfort of our Guests

This was my 3rd stay, all as good. Lovely cottage, good location and very nice and accommodating owners. Thank you.

Thank you for taking time out to provide future guests with an insight of your experience during your stays at Acorn Hedge Cottage

“perfect stay in the country, but close enough to the city”

Reviewed 20 May 2011

very homely and comfortable place to stay with all mod cons, need own transport as slightly isolated although not too far from motorway! great for walking and good base for visiting Swansea, we visited on the weekend with all the snow so didn't venture too far, absolutely great views from the top of the mountain.

I want to thank you for your comment about the cottage being homely as I want guests to feel welcome and make the most of their time spent in the cottage especially upon their return after a day out exploring the beautiful countryside and all Carmarthenshire has to offer

“Comfortable cottage and charming hosts”

Reviewed 16 May 2011

Lovely cottage providing easy access to the Pembrokeshire coast and the Brecon Beacons. Regret that they no longer appear to take pets as Pepper loved it too.

Thank you for your lovely comments about Acorn Hedge Cottage. We are truly glad you enjoyed all your walks with Pepper, unfortunately as you say we no longer cater for dogs but many people still enjoy the cottage and the beautiful surrounding area
