The Northumberland region
Berwick is ideally situated for exploring both this special corner of Northumbria and the Scottish Borders. Designated an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty “with many magnificent castles, historic houses and sweeping golden sandy beaches that can go on for miles. Follow the River Tweed dipping into England then Scotland and back again not knowing where you really are visiting quaint unique villages as you go. From the historic town of Alnwick with its medieval Castle and Garden, Wooler's Cheviot Hills and National Park to the fishing village of Eyemouth and the Abby towns of Kelso and Melrose, all within and ¾ hour sightseeing drive and having little traffic on our roads means no traffic jams.
A short drive takes you to England's cradle of Christianity, The Holy island of Lindisfarne, where in AD635 the monk St. Adain, reintroduced Christianity to the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. The mission was so successfull that Lindisfarne was known throughout Europe as a centre of religious learning and craftsmanship, and it is here around AD700 the monks created the magnificent Lindisfarne gospels, now considered to be a masterpiece of early Anglo-Saxon/Celtic art.
Berwick upon Tweed
Situated within the historic Elizabethan wall and only three minutes walk from the town centre makes shopping and site seeing in Berwick easy. There are several pubs and hotels that provide a good menu and a good selection of shops including some that provide fresh local produce. Visit the riverside where you can often watch traditional salmon net fishing at low tide in the summer from "gardi's batt" the mid-stream sand bar below the Old Bridge 1603.. Watch a spectacular light display on the viaduct arches on The Royal Border Bridge 1850 every night
Berwick has four golden sandy beaches two that have rock pools and one with a prominade and splash park, one town golf course, and, just to the South, a links course. The River Tweed, famed for its salmon has regular boat trips that stop at Paxton House and Country Park with the largest collection of Chippendale furniture in Scotland and the perfect place for your picnic or you can even get married there and sail back to visit Berwick's unique buildings. Dominating Marygate is the spired Town Hall, built by The Guild of Berwick in 1750's A guided tour will take you around the Guild Hall and goal cells. The curfew bell rings every night just before 8pm.
