The England region

North Devon has lots to offer anyone wishing to relax or enjoy a more active holiday.

The golden sandy beaches of Saunton, Croyde and Woolacombe are a haven for those wishing to surf the wave or simply lie back and relax. All of which can be reached within 25 minutes by car.

Exmoor National Park is also a short drive away and provides some fabulous, rugged, natural scenery to enjoy on foot or by car. There are many fantastic walks that can be enjoyed within Exmoor and in and around Berrynarbor, also providing plenty of opportunity for any keen bird spotters. The magnificent South West Coast Path can be picked up one mile from Poppies at Watermouth Harbour, and provides a splendid coastal walk.

The nearby towns of Combe Martin, Ilfracombe and Barnstaple offer some splendid Victorian architecture, lovely boutique shops, historic marketplaces, fine dining restaurants and characterful pubs - all of which are within a 10 mile radius of Poppies.

Berrynarbor

The beautiful village of Berrynarbor has won several awards for it's splendour. Being "Best Kept Village" and "Britain in Bloom" winner, Berrynarbor has some delightful gardens, historic buildings and lush countryside to enjoy. Ye Olde Globe is the quant village pub, offers a lovely menu and a very pleasant pint, and is only 200m from Poppies.

Combe Martin, having the longest high street of any village in the country, has much history and tradition to offer. Several fantastic pubs, a number of fine shops, and numerous annual events such as The Strawberry Fayre, Summer Carnival Week and The Hunting of the Earl of Rhone, can all be enjoyed in Combe Martin.

Further along the coast lies Ilfracombe, a Victorian town with a beautiful harbour. There are many quaint shops along the high street, plenty of lovely pubs, the Landmark theatre, the harbour, (offering a variety of boat trips along the coast), a cliff top golf course - to name but a few of the attractions on offer in Ilfracombe.

“What a great find!”

Reviewed 19 Sep 2016

Perfect location, perfect accommodation, perfect hosts as far as we were concerned. Even the weather was good! Handy for good beaches and coves as well as interesting towns and villages. Such a nice open plan "bungalow" with all mod cons, comfortable bed, lovely shower, etc . Definitely recommend to others.

“Highly Recommended!”

My wife, daughter and I had a lovely stay at Poppies. Andy, Alison and Sophie made us feel very welcome and all communication with Andy before our stay was excellent. Berrynarbor is a lovely village, close to the main road and some super coves and beaches. We would highly recommend this cottage to anyone looking at staying in the area. See you again next year! Nick, Louise and Ella x

Thank you for such a lovely review. We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay; I know a certain 8 year old also enjoyed having you as neighbours! We look forward to welcoming you back to Poppies in 2017, x

We arrived at Poppies to find a spotless beautiful cottage A cream tea awaited us and after a 7 hour journey it was much appreciated. The cottage is in a lovely village and walking or short drives give you great places to see and enjoy. Would most certainly stay at Poppies again.

Wow, what a great review!! Thank you so much! Look forward to welcoming you back.

“Clean comfortable and very welcoming”

A lovely property with personal touches by Andy and Alison that made us feel welcome. Flowers, cream tea and beautifully clean. Also towels were provided which was an extra bonus. The cottage is in a very pretty area and so much to do a week isn't enough. Ilfracombe has so much to offer with excellent restaurants and so many individual shops. A short distance away is Barnstaple - with a buzzing shopping centre and markets. A lot of thought by Andy and Alison has been put into the cottage to make it suitable for a holiday and it shows.

Thank you for the lovely review, we're so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Hope to welcome you back to Poppies soon.

Poppies has everything that you need for a comfortable stay. Easy access to the village and to the nearby main road. The owners are very friendly and helpful and they keep the property in tip-top condition. We have booked another week later in the year!

So delighted you enjoyed your stay at Poppies. We are very much looking forward to welcoming you back later in the year.

“Superb dog friendly holiday cottage”

Reviewed 11 Jun 2013

To spend a holiday on the the North Devon Coast is special enough, but to also stay in such a wonderful cottage and have lovely dry sunny weather all week was, well, quite amazing really! We were so glad we stayed at 'Poppies' and agree with all previous comments about it. Our dogs loved the little garden and we enjoyed coming back from our coastal path walks or days on the beach to enjoy a cuppa out there in the sun! The cottage is very well equipped, clean and modern but homely and comfortable also. We made good use of the detailed maps in the bookcase and it was great to have Wi Fi and Sky TV as well! Must also mention the little dog exercise field which is just around the corner, and has wonderful views of the countryside surrounding the lovely village. Andy and Alison are very friendly and helpful and we felt very welcome (loved the scones and fresh flowers on arrival!) All in all we were very impressed with 'Poppies' which is one of the best cottages we have stayed in!

Many thanks for the wonderful review. We're delighted you had such a great holiday in North Devon (and so lucky with the weather!). We hope to welcome you back soon.

“Lovely cottage in a perfect location”

Reviewed 5 Jun 2013

The cottage is located in a beautiful village with many picturesque views of the Devon countryside. The accommadation was very well presented on our arrival, clean, well appointed with a welcoming cream tea in the fridge! The village is centrally situated with easy access to all areas of the north Devon coast and towns and we visited most of them during our stay. We have stayed in many cottages over the years and this one rates as one of the best.

Thank you so much for the fabulous review, we're so pleased you had such a wonderful stay with us. We do hope to welcome you back to Poppies again soon.

“Truly superb accommodation in picturesque surroundings”

Reviewed 25 Apr 2013

We spent a very relaxing week at Poppies with our dog. The accommodation was very clean and beautifully presented. There were lots of lovely welcoming personnel touches such as a cream tea and flowers. The accommodation had everything we needed for cooking etc and dvds, books & sky tv for rainy days. It was a real home from home. There was also a lovely secure garden which was great for our dog. The whole booking procedure was very simple and straightforward & Andy got back to us quickly & answered any questions we had. Berrynarbor is a lovely little village with a shop which has all the essentials and you are close to Ilfracombe & Combe Martin also. The surrounding area is very beautiful and there are lots of great coastal walks. Woolacombe and Saunton are not too far & are great for dogs. The cottage was fantastic in a lovely area & we didn't want to leave!

Wow, what an amazing review - thank you so much! Glad you had such a great holiday in Devon. We hope to welcome you back soon (don't forget 10% discount for returning guests!)

“Wonderfully relaxing stay in a truly lovely cottage”

Reviewed 21 Apr 2013

My husband and I chose Poppies as the place to spend a relaxing Easter week and we certainly weren't disappointed. The cottage is in a lovely spot in the pretty village of Berrynarbour, just a few miles from the beaches of Combe Martin, Ilfracombe and Woolacombe amonsgt others. We didn't do much walking as I'm currently heavily pregnant but it looked like there were lots of country and coastal walks close by too. The cottage itself is beautifully appointed with lots of personal touches to make it feel like a home from home. As our holiday was just as much about resting as exploring, we spent quite a lot of time there but it really does have everything you need, including sky TV and wifi which we enjoyed having, and a little garden to enjoy the peace and quiet and sun if you are lucky enough to get, which we were! We took our dog Molly and she loved it there too. Poppies is the sort of place you genuinely look forward to coming home to after a long day on the beach or exploring the beautiful North Devon coastline, and we wouldn't hesitate recommending it.

Thank you so much for such a glowing review, we're delighted you enjoyed your 'Babymoon' at Poppies and the surrounding area. Hope life with the little one is going well and we can welcome the 'three' of you back soon.

“Fabulous!!!! - Home from Home :0)”

Reviewed 16 Nov 2012

Fabulous cottage which really was a 'home from home' for me and my husband. We were looking for a break to allow us to relax, enjoy some fresh air and explore too. We were also wanting somewhere memorable to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. We were not disappointed. Very, very cosy and clean accommodation, decorated beautifully and to a very high standard. Equipped with facilities where you want for nothing. I particularly appreciated, free WiFi, Full SkyTV, DVD player with a selection of DVD's provided too, hairdryer, cottage's own central heating which you control, a proper oven as well as a microwave and toaster. iPod Dock was a nice touch too as most people have music on the go nowadays. Just to warn you though, the power shower is amaaaaaazing and you may not want to get out in a hurry, I know I didn't!!! Proper fluffy bath sheets and towels are provided and big enough to wrap both of us in. It was also a help to have hand soap, fairy liquid and tea towels provided too as this is something I normally forget to pack and end up buying on arrival. Countryside walks are slap bang on your doorstep and very, very scenic. Berrynarbour is a beautiful village with some fabulous scenery and I do recommend you get out and about and have a look round. The local village shop is literally a 10 minute walk away and has all your food essentials, wine selection, newspapers and magazines. Ilfracombe is the next village should you need a supermarket or shops in general. Can heartily recommend a deli cafe we visited for Brunch but the name has slipped my mind (I'm sure Allison & Andy will know this), it was really good value and I can recommend the blueberry pancakes with maple syrup, yum! The famous sculpture 'Verity' is also placed at Ilfracombe harbour and is also worth a visit. She really is spectacular, I loved her. Woolcoombe Bay is a beautiful beach and is also a short car ride away, well worth a visit if you're after a beach stroll. A beautifully placed pub called The Red Barn is just behind the beach and you can sit outside and look out to sea whilst enjoying your favourite tipple. We saw the sun set and it really was beautiful. We can also recommend the walk to Combe Martin but go via the Coastal Path to enjoy the full effect of the countryside. It takes about 30 minutes and you can grab a coffee at The Royal Marine pub. Very reasonably priced too. Andy and Allison, the owners of Poppies who live next door, are very knowledgeable having lived in the area 3/4 years now (although there is also a very informative handbook provided in the cottage along with many leaflets and books to help you plan your trips out). Nothing is too much trouble for them and they really are a lovely and friendly couple. We celebrated our 2nd Wedding Anniversary during our stay at Poppies and they even sent us a card which demonstrates how lovely and thoughtful a couple they are. If it's relaxation, beautiful views and home comforts you want, then do not hesitate to book this immediately. You won't be disappointed. We certainly wasn't and we are already talking about booking our return stay!!!!
