The Lombardy region

The surface of Lombardy is divided almost equally between plain (which represents approximately 47% of the territory) and the mountainous areas (which account for 41%). The remaining 12% of the region is hilly.Under the morphological appearance of the region is divided into four parts: a strictly alpine, mountain or a hill, a flat or slightly move divided into Upper and Lower plains and finally the area south of the river Po The region is crossed by dozens of rivers (including the largest river in Italy) and is bathed by hundreds of lakes, natural and artificial origin. It reaches the highest point of the Punta Perrucchetti (4,020 m), belonging to the Bernina massif. It's a place full of history, it's story begin in the Neolithic era, culture and tradition. It offers every kind of holiday you can look for: from naturalistic holiday (mountains, rivers, lakes) to food tours, from cultural holidays (paintings and sculpture, church, ancient buildings…) to relax in many thermal sites and much more.

Bergamo

The city of Bergamo is divided into two parts, the Upper Town, an old town surrounded by walls, which, as you can guess from the name, is the upper part, and the Lower Town, which, although it has also an ancient origin and retains its historic center, has been renewed, in some parts, by recent interventions. The Holiday house Pelabrocco is located in the historic Lower Town, at the foot of the ancient Venetian walls that enclose the Upper Town, a few meters from Porta Sant'Agostino one of the four gates to the walls. A few hundred meters are the most important museums in Bergamo, Gamec (museum of modern and contemporary art), Accademia Carrara (art gallery), Bernareggi Museum (art gallery). Its location is strategic to reach by foot, in a few minutes, both the Upper Town and the center of the modern part of Bergamo. The bus that connects the center of the Upper Town with the new center of Bergamo and the airport is 50 mt. far. Bergamo was founded by the Gauls, and was annexed to the Roman Empire in 49 BC. Later conquered first by the Lombards, then by the Franks, became a Free City in 1098, was part of the Lombard League, came under the influence of the Duchy of Milan until 1428, when it became part of the Serenissima Republic (Venice), who built the famous walls.

“Excellent apartment in a perfect location”

Reviewed 15 Jun 2013

We stayed at Casa San Tomaso for a week in June 2013. The apartment is in a perfect location for visiting all of the attractions in and around Bergamo. We were welcomed by our host, Massimo, who carefully explained everything we needed to know to enjoy our stay. The apartment was immaculately presented and very well equipped. The bed was very comfortable (this is always important!). We especially appreciated the generous welcome pack and the use of a secure garage for our car just a short walk from the apartment, however we had virtually no use for a car while we were in Bergamo. Mostly everything was within walking distance and there is a very good public transport service. There is also a fast train service for a day trip to Milan. Massimo loaned us a portable wifi hotspot device for the duration of our stay so we could have internet access, even when we were on one of our walks in the stunning countryside above San Vigilio! There are great shops just at the end of Via San Tomaso for bread, cheese, wine and fruit and vegetables and there is a Carrefour supermarket just a short distance beyond these shops. We also found it difficult to stay away from the pasticceria with its delicious small quiches - call in and say "Ciao" to Camilla (www.officinadeldolce.com) when you visit this delightful destination.
