The Algarve region
Bensafrim is a former civil parish in the municipality of Lagos, Portugal. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Bensafrim e Barão de São João. It has about 2,004 inhabitants (2001).
The name comes from the Arabic word Benassaharim. It used to be an agrarian community. Until the 50's of the past century the most important means of transportation were the ox and the donkey. Now it is a dormitory suburb of Lagos.
The most important event of the year is the annual fair on the 25th and 26th of August. This fair already took place in 1880.
The last years there has been much building activity. A new square, sports fields, a medical post, water supplies and also the roads were improved. From Bensafrim there is a connection to the A22 now.
Located in the council area of Lagos and surrounded by hills with views to the coast, Bensafrim is a typical Algarvean village with a Roman fort nearby. From Bensafrim you can reach the Barragem da Bravura, a beautiful dam surrounded by luscious vegetation.
Bensafrim is the largest village in the Lagos department, in the great Algarve region, characterized by its charming typical white houses with a coloured bar around windows and doors, with the traditional Algarve's chimneys, showing off the big Moorish influence, not only because of the proximity with the North of Africa, but also by the many years of Moorish occupancy of the territory.
In fact, this territory presents a very ancient human occupancy, as it is observable in the many archaeological vestiges of the region, like the Cabeça do Rochedo Menhir or a Iron Age necropolis that was later inhabited by Romans. Bensafrim was also inhabited by Moors that left an important legacy in all the Algarve region.
Bensafrim has been able to maintain its rural feature, producing many of the Algarve's traditional products, such as honey, figs, almonds, cattle or chalk, surviving graciously to the urban and touristic development of the Algarve region in the past decades.
The village is proud of its Mother Church and the many rural legacies of an agricultural lifestyle history, with many elements such as agricultural instruments, wells, watermills, among many others.
Lagos is one of the most visited cities in the Algarve and Portugal, due to its variety of tourist-friendly beaches, bars, restaurants, and hotels, renowned for its vibrant summer nightlife and parties. Yet, Lagos is also a historic centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, frequent home of Henry the Navigator, historical shipyard and, at one time, centre of the European slave trade. In 2012, travel website TripAdvisor, classified Lagos as the number 1 travel destination, on a list of "15 destinations on the rise" worldwide.
Here are shopping places, restaurants and beaches that are suggested around "Casa Contente"
If you turn right when leaving the entrance road of Casa Contente and straight at the roundabout, direction Bensafrim, you see left a square, after approx. 500 m., before you come into the center of the village. Here you can buy each morning (excluding Sundays) until approx. 12 o'clock fresh bread, and in the market hall fresh vegetables, daily fresh fish etc. In the center of Bensafrim you will find at the small square left a small supermarket. In the village there is also an "Alisuper", a small supermarket.
LIDL (Opened everyday) - Going through Bensafrim and Portelas until Lagos, then go second right at the first, and straight at the second roundabout, then left. After approximately 400 meters, you will see the LIDL on the corner on the right.
PINGO DOCE (extended) foods and domestic assortment (Opened everyday) – Going through Bensafrim and Portelas until Lagos, on the first roundabout exit on the 3rd exit, after approximately 500 meters turn left on the second roundabout. PINGO DOCE is on your left side.
MODELO (extended) foods and domestic assortment (Opened everyday) - Going through Bensafrim and Portelas turn right at the first roundabout in Lagos. After approximately 1500 meters you will see MODELO on the left corner.
INTERMARCHÉ (extended) foods and domestic assortment (Opened everyday) - Take the highway to Lagos. At the second roundabout turn left to Lagos. After approximately 1000 meters go straight on the next roundabout. You can see the Intermarché on the right side after 1-2 km.
REFORMA AGRÁRIA (Saturday morning) – In this market you can buy fresh products (vegetables, fruit, etc.) sold by the local farmers. Going through Bensafrim and Portelas until Lagos, on the first roundabout exit on the 3rd exit, after approximately 500 meters go straight ahead on the second roundabout and continue on the main avenue until you find a parking lot on the right side before the Albergaria. The building of Reforma Agrária is just behind the Albergaria.
On the old road to Lagos, at the roundabout go straight. On the left side, in the middle of the village restaurant O' Tacho. Reasonable good food and value for money!
Also in Bensafrim, a new restaurant named O' Koala. Never been there yet, but “good food and reasonably priced” a recent guest wrote me!For you who crave for pancakes and sweet Hansel & Gretel, Rua Barragem da Bravura, N125-9, Bensafrim 8600-070 is really great place for sweet teeth.
Barão São João
If you pass through Bensafrim you turn right at the first junction to Barão São João. After approx. 4-5 km left, directly after the ZOO, you will see restaurant O Cangalho, on Tuesday evening during dinner with Fado "flaming" snack beforehand.
First class Italian restaurant Italia (very nice restaurant and reservation is necessary). From mail office, halfway on the boulevard (Avenida dos Descobrimentos) into the centre, on the right side of the 2e small square towards the inner town.
Adega de Marina on the boulevard in Lagos. Large family restaurant where children can walk around!
Also in fisherman port daily fresh fish served (Unlike in other ports, fishermen return daily to the port!).
You will find Sítio do Rio, a very good fish restaurant (towards the beach).
Meia Praia (approx. 10 minutes), large beach, east of Lagos.
Drive, coming from Bensafrim the old road through Portelas. Lagos and go straight on the first roundabout in Lagos. At the next roundabout, turn left. Keep right and turn right to the Marina at the next roundabout. Then follow the train rails at the railway station for a short while. After about 1000 meter you will reach the beach.
On Sundays at Bahia bar you can listen to live music after 17h00.
Praia da Luz (approx. 15 minutes) smaller beach with many restaurants on the boulevard.
Approximately 3 km West of Lagos.
Atlantic, west coast (approx. 25 minutes) a lot of, larger and smaller, scarcely populated beaches and a splendid rock coast. Turn left when leaving the entrance road of Casa Contente, direction Aljezur. Beautiful beaches at Carrapatera, Bordeira and Aljezur!

"A perfect holiday"
We went to play golf in the Algarve. Together with two friends we left from Rotterdam airport to Faro. In Faro we picked up our rented car and within an hour we were at Casa Contente. A week (again) in Casa Contente, Algarve, golf and relax with the Jacuzzi jets and bubble seat in the pool while overlooking a private garden with lots of tropical plants. In the afternoon we had a BBQ in the garden, roasted a fish with a glass of white wine, it was the start of a wonderful week. The next day golf, lunch and dinner in the evening in the port of Lagos. When back in Casa Contente we had a look at the Dutch TV (Satellite & cable), check email on the free wifi and early to bed, the next morning golfing in Espiche, a beautiful golf course nearby and cheap too. Time flies. Everything was arranged perfectly by Maria, the house manager who cleans and is available whenever necessary. Then, after a perfect holiday in Casa Contente, again back to the Netherlands.

"Heerlijke weken in Casa Contente"

"Very good location for visiting the west and south coast!"
After a holiday in januari this year, we stayed for the second time in Casa C during the first 2 weeks of november. We had a good time in this friendly house. Several times we enjoyed our breakfast, out of the wind on the sunny terrace near the pool!, and we made trips to some nice beaches on the west coast.

Last week I have stayed at Casa Contente with my girlfriend. We had a lovely time! The house was clean and the swimming pool and we had everything we needed. We used the outside barbecue almost every day. The garden was beautiful with all the flowers! Lots of privacy (no neighbors) what made the house especially a wonderful place. Also the area is great, like the Monchique and the West cost. We will be back because we really enjoyed the time here, thanks!

"Casa Contente makes us a contented family"
Last year I enjoyed the villa so much that I decided to come back. The villa is very private with a swimming pool with Jacuzzi, the BBQ, the terrace and the beautiful flower garden. When you have a car, it is very easy to go to Lagos, a nice town with many restaurants and a very big beach and lots of shops. You can eat in the countryside or use the big BBQ near the pool which is fantastic! When it starts to rain, you can use the wifi for your laptop, or enjoy the television. For reading is a small assortment of books available in the villa. In september I come back with a couple of friends for playing golf. Playing golfin the surroundings is much cheaper than in the middle of the Algarve. At the end of the vacation within a hour in Faro Airport. I will be back Lex and Marianne

"Casa Contente, a fantastic holiday"
We stayed in Casa Contente for two weeks. We loved the privacy of the villa and the children played all day in the pool at the bubble seat. We enjoyed barbeque with friends (who also stayed in the Algarve) near the pool with fresh fish we bought from the local market in Bensafrim.and enjoyed the rural views. The house was perfect for us. We had some minor points for repairs we reported to the owner. Harry, thank you for your tips, especially we liked the Fado performance at the nearby restaurant O Cangalho. We recommend the villa for families with or without children! (Harry, sorry for not responding earlier to your request for a review)
