Location description from owner

The Costa del Sol region

Justly famous for its wonderful climate, the Malaga region is so much more than just a beach destination. Choose Benalmadena as a base from which to explore this fascinating area and you take advantage of the town's second to none road, rail and airport connections.

Often called Costa del Golf, there are more than 60 golf courses stretching from Sotogrande in the west to Velez Malaga in the east. Benalmadena's central location on the coast makes it the ideal base from which to play them from. But why waste time travelling so far when the town's own renowned course, Torrequebrada Golf Course, has such stunning mountain and sea views?

Often overlooked, Malaga's elegant city centre is just 20km away. With its handsome parks and squares, world class museums, stunning architecture and excellent shopping, it makes for a great day out. And no trip to Andalucia is complete without an excursion to the unforgettable Alhambra Palace UNESCO World Heritage Site in Granada.

Seville too is steeped with history and so lively and beautiful that it inspired music and culture from flamenco to opera. Other notable places to visit include the spectacular and historic Ronda or Europe's windsurfing capital, Tarifa on Spain's mostly unspoiled Costa de la Luz coast.

A visit to one of Andalucia's charming white washed villages such as Benalmadena Pueblo or nearby Mijas is a must. And the varied and wonderful landscapes of this region, including the magnificent gorge and lakes of El Chorro and unusual rock formations at El Torcal, are easily accessible from Benalmadena too.

Gibraltar is a curious mix of cultures set in the most spectacular location, where you could be forgiven for thinking you are in a British high street until you explore the awe inspiring Rock, drink in its views of Africa and feed the wild monkeys at the top!

For the more adventurous, reasonably priced weekend or day trips to exotic Morocco can be booked in Benalmadena and in winter, it is possible to ski at the nearby Sierra Nevada ski resort in the morning and take a romantic stroll by the beach in the evening. All of this is possible if you choose Benalmadena as a base for your holiday.

Benalmadena Central

Catering to all ages and interests, Benalmadena is made up of three distinct areas, each offering their own attractions and easily accessible from the centrally located apartment should you choose to stay.

Benalmadena Costa has several lovely beaches as well as the bustling, beautiful marina, offering all types of water sports, pleasure trips, dolphin and whale watching safaris and fishing. It is also one of the premier nightlife centres in the region and has many restaurants, discos and shopping centres. Attractions include the SeaLife Centre and Selwo Marina theme park, home to dolphins, penguins, seals and other marine mammals species. And a lovely walk along the promenade takes you from the Marina to the exotic Moorish style Castle Bil-Bil - a romantic place from which to watch the sun set!

The lovely Parque Paloma (Park of Doves) sits between the beach and Arroyo de la Miel. Beautifully landscaped, the park has a large lake and - home to many animals from bunny rabbits to pelicans and emus - is a firm favourite with children of all ages.

At the top of the park is charming Arroyo de la Miel with its squares, shops and restaurants as well as an ice skating rink and children's favourite, Tivoli World amusement park. Near the railway station is a cable car (teleferico) ascending to the summit of the 769-metre Calamorro mountain with its panoramic views of the Costa, Sierra Nevada mountains, and on clear days, the African coastline.

For those who enjoy a bit of bargain hunting in the sunshine, there is a large market to explore near Tivoli World every Friday and a smaller flea market at Paloma Park on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Benalmadena Pueblo is a pretty, white-washed Andalusian village and at 200 meters above sea level, offers specular views along the coast. Although it has remained largely free from tourists, there is a bull ring and a museum housing a large collection of Pre-Columbian and local artifacts dating back to the Bronze Age. Traditional it may be, but the village also has the unique Colomares Castle, Bird of Prey Centre, Snake World, and perhaps unexpectedly, the largest example of a Buddhist Enlightenment Stupa in the Western world.

Benalmadena is the perfect choice for a holiday destination whatever time of year you come. If you chose to visit at Easter, the spectacular Semana Santa (Easter Holy Week) processions in Malaga and Benalmadena Pueblo are an unforgettable must see. June sees the Arroyo de la Miel Feria (Festival), and August is time for Malaga and Benalmadena Pueblo's Feria celebrations.

During the summer months, there are two water parks within 10 km, one at Mijas Costa and the other at Torremolinos (both accessible by train). And for something exotic, try the excellent Fuengirola Zoo or a snappy trip to the Crocodile Park at Torremolinos, where you can hold baby crocks and meet Europe's largest reptile.

“Brilliant accommodation - spacious, light and welcoming.”

Reviewed 18 Jun 2013

Me and my girlfriend stayed in the apartment for a week and it was perfect for us. It was light and spacious, with a lovely clean pool. This was shared but at no point were there more than two people there at the same time as us, which was great. It was within easy walking distance of the train station, supermarket and beach. There was also plenty to do, so all in all I would highly recommend this apartment!
